Winch buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You searched for a winch and got a 12 V drum, a hand strap, a wire winch that also says hoist, a cable puller, and a drill you supply yourself. This winch buying guide starts with the job, then one agreed capacity, then a line that matches the fairlead. The twelve rows, with prices, are in our [winch comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/winch). Peter F. read these amazon.co.uk listings in October 2026. There was no lab test. Name the job before the brand

Four jobs do not share a capacity rule. A boat on a bunk trailer is a rolling pull. A vehicle or a stump is a horizontal recovery. A load that leaves the ground is a short lift. A short drag can be a cable puller. Stealth names utility, ATV, boat trailers, and recovery. Neilsen says horizontal winching at 2,000 lb and 907 kg. Einhell states 500 kg and then says hoist. AB Tools TE694 prints a 1.83 m lift. The 13,500 lb RUGCEL is about £399.99 and its dimension cell prints 530 x 20 x 20 cm. The largest figure is not the job.

Read capacity once, on the first layer

Keep figures that agree. Do not average two numbers. UK Winches describe rated pull with at least five wraps left, and about half the pull when half the rope is still on the drum. A recovery rating is a first-layer horizontal pull, not a hanging weight. A trailer rule of thumb is about twice the rolling load, not an off-road vehicle multiple. BOOMSTART prints 1,130 kg and 270 kg (600 lb), and URL ASIN B095733G1X is not printed ASIN B0CZ42B3QS. The 3,500 lb Stealth slips between 1,588 kg and 1,587 kg. Do not average it. None of these pages is shown as UKCA marked or LOLER examined.

Match the line to the guide

Synthetic rope wants a smooth hawse. Steel wants a roller fairlead. Webbing has to lie flat. The Stealth rows state no rope length. The 13,500 lb RUGCEL states 26 m of 11 mm nylon. The 2,500 lb kit pairs steel with a roller, and the cable length is missing. Neilsen gives 15 m of 4 mm steel and no fairlead. FreeTec includes 10 m of polyester about 50 mm wide. DASBET says webbing and also a tow rope. BOOMSTART states polyester and a steel-cable size. When the line is not one material, stop.

Pawl, brake, and then the power

A pawl or brake holds the load. A free-spool clutch only lets line off a 12 V drum. Stealth states that clutch and no load brake. Einhell states a return lock, and UK reviewers still report a tangling cable. FreeTec states a safety pawl and a dual-speed gear without the ratios. One owner found it dry. A 12 V winch needs a battery and intermittent use. LiftingSafety quotes a 3:1 rope factor against 5:1 for hoist rope. A lighting socket cannot feed the motor. Battery versus crank is electric winch vs manual winch.

Use the table, then stop if the job changes

Open the comparison only after the job, the capacity, the line, and the hold have survived. Who should skip each row is on best winch. Stars are not a lifting test. The Neilsen has UK stories and no aggregate star line, so you cannot quote a score the page does not print. Call a competent person for a lift at work, a high-current install, or gears that are already damaged.

Common questions

Do I need a recovery winch, a trailer winch, or something for lifting?
Name the load’s path. If the boat stays on the rollers, you want a strap drum or a small 12 V winch whose listing says boat trailers. If a vehicle or a stump stays on the ground, you want a horizontal recovery winch and an anchor that cannot slide. If the load hangs, you want a stated hold such as the Einhell return lock, on a fixing that can take the twist. The star rating is still not a LOLER certificate.
Why do kilograms and pounds on the same listing disagree?
Because the page was filled from more than one field. BOOMSTART prints 1,130 kg and 270 kg (600 lb). Those are not two tests you can blend. The Stealth 3,500 lb kilogram line slips by one kilogram beside an agreed 3,500 lb. If the units describe different pulls, walk away from that ASIN.
Is rated line pull the weight I can hang from a beam?
No. A recovery rating is a horizontal pull on the first layer, with wraps left on the drum. As more line stays on the drum, the pull falls. UK Winches describe about half the pull when half the rope is still wound on. Hanging a mower is a lift. The Einhell states 500 kg and a return lock, and its bullets say hoist, but that is not a safe working load.
Can I power a 12 V winch from the towbar socket?
Do not plan on it. A lighting socket is for lamps, not a winch motor. The Neilsen is 1.7 kW on the title, and UK reviews say to keep the anchor vehicle’s engine running. The only UK review on the RUGCEL 2,500 lb kit reports a huge current and a winch that would not run. A dedicated battery feed is the honest circuit.
When does LOLER matter at home versus at work?
LOLER applies to lifting equipment used at work. If the load never leaves the ground, HSE treats that ground-level winching as outside lifting equipment. The moment you suspend a load at work, examination and a competent person enter the job. A weekend boat retrieve on your own trailer is not that regime, and these listings are not a LOLER certificate.
