How to use a mini dumper

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have, or you are about to have, a walk-behind electric barrow, and the risky moment is a full tub on a drive, a tip you cannot hold, or a charger that is the wrong plug. This page is how to use a mini dumper when the machine is one of the two Extol Premium wheelbarrows in the [mini dumper comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/mini-dumper): forward and reverse, a turbo mode, an electric brake, and a manual tip. Peter F. did not ride them. The steps follow those listings, plus UK manuals for other barrows, named where they are not Extol's. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set it up and learn the controls before the first load

Both listings require assembly. On the 300 kg model, a review theme says the sheet was only in Czech. INDG271 expects English instructions before first use, so stop and get an English copy if you cannot read it. At work, PUWER still wants instruction and training. The pages list forward, reverse, normal and turbo, and an electric brake on inclines. The 400 kg model adds a manual downhill brake that can be set to stop. Switching the 300 kg motor off is not a licence to push a loaded tub. Which machine you bought is on the mini dumper buying guide.

Load on the level and keep the rim clear

Load on flat ground, with the brake applied, and keep material below the rim. A 300 L tub of mulch can block your sight before it reaches 300 kg. A 200 L tub of dense spoil can hit the kilogram limit while it still looks loadable. Do not convert litres into kilograms. Place heavier pieces low and centred. If you cannot see the ground ahead, remove material before you drive. Turbo is for a clear route you have already walked. Helpers stay clear of the wheels and of the arc of the tub. A passenger platform in the 400 kg bullets is not a seat.

Slopes, brakes, and when to turn back

Neither Extol listing states a maximum slope. Do not borrow a number from another brand. Titan's TPM350E manual says to work across the face of slopes. Titan's FAQ says to drive straight up or down, not at an angle. Those two Titan pages disagree, and neither is the Extol sheet. If your instructions give no figure, treat a slope you have not walked empty as a reason to turn back. The electric brake on inclines is listed on both Extols. Only the 400 kg model adds a manual downhill brake you can set to stop. Test that brake empty before a full tub comes down the drive. Unload on level ground, not on a camber or at the edge of a bank.

Charge indoors on a proper UK plug

Both batteries are removable and described as IP64: 40 V / 6000 mAh on the 300 kg model, and 54 V / 15 Ah on the 400 kg model. Charge the pack indoors, in the dry. Neither page names a charger or a charge time. Confirm a fused BS 1363 plug first. On 30 June 2026 a border rejection of a different wheelbarrow cited a two-pin unfused plug and a fire risk. That report is not these ASINs. If the plug is wrong, do not use an adaptor. Bring in a trained operator for a public road, an unstable bank, a lifting attachment that may fall under LOLER, or a busy site. What you put in the tub is on mini dumper for garden.

Common questions

How do I start, drive, and stop a walk-behind electric barrow?
Assemble it, read an English manual, and try it empty on flat ground. The Extol listings give forward, reverse, normal and turbo, and an electric brake. Use normal speed until reverse and the brake behave as you expect. The 400 kg model also has a manual downhill brake you can set to stop. Turbo waits until the route is clear. Stop with the brake, on ground where the tub cannot run on.
How should I load the tub so it does not tip me over?
Load on the level, brake on, material below the rim, heavier pieces low and centred. Keep your view of the ground. A 300 L tub of mulch can block sight before it reaches 300 kg. A 200 L tub of dense spoil can reach the kilogram limit sooner. If you cannot see, or the tub feels light at the handles in a way you do not trust, remove some of the load.
Why is tipping so hard when it is full, and how do I unload?
Review themes on the 300 kg Extol say manual tipping is hard when the tub is full. The 400 kg model uses a tilt rod, which is still your effort, not a hydraulic ram. Brake the barrow, tip only when it is stable, and take a second trip if you cannot control the drop. Put the tub back down before you drive off. Do not unload on a camber.
Can I take it down a driveway, and do I drive straight or across?
Only if your own manual gives a slope limit and a direction, and you have tried the brake empty on that drive. Titan's manual and Titan's FAQ disagree on across versus straight, and neither is the Extol sheet. These Extol pages do not state a slope angle. If the instructions are silent, do not invent a rule. Unload on level ground.
How do I charge the battery safely in the UK?
Remove the battery and charge it indoors on a fused BS 1363 plug. Both packs are described as removable and IP64. Charge hours are not stated, so use the indicator and the charger sheet. A June 2026 border rejection of a different wheelbarrow concerned a two-pin unfused plug and fire risk. If your plug matches that failure, do not charge it.
