Hand winch buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to trust a small drum or a lever arm with a boat, a jet ski, or a trailer load, and the titles in our [hand winch comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/hand-winch) mix post-mounted drums, cable pullers with two hooks and no base, and pages that print two capacities. This hand winch buying guide is the order of checks: which machine, which number is the capacity, what is in the box, and why a missing certificate is not a pass. Peter F. read these amazon.co.uk listings on 19 October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Drum, puller, or hoist

A trailer hand winch is usually a drum on a plate. You crank, the strap or wire winds on, and the ratchet or brake is supposed to hold when you pause. KATSU, FreeTec, Einhell and Amtech sell that shape in this set. A cable puller is a different tool. AB Tools TE817 and TE694 are lever tools with two hooks and a short stroke of aircraft cable. They can pull between two fixings. They do not replace the winch post, because there is no mounting base and the cable is short. Some listings claim an automatic brake or a worm gear, yet none of the twelve pages names BS EN 13157 or ships a LOLER test certificate. Dutton-Lainson's selection guide explains that ratchet winches are for pulling with a freewheel position, while brake or worm gears are chosen when the load must stay put if you let go of the handle. That is vocabulary, not a promise about every ASIN. Aim Tools prints a brake claim and still arrives without wire or a hook. A named pick inside the twelve-row table is on best hand winch.

One capacity, one unit

Force one capacity figure onto your shortlist. BOOMSTART is the worked bad example: the size line says 270 kg, 600 lb and 6 m, while a bullet says 1,130 kg and a 10 m steel cable. Those are different products on one page. Reject that listing until the seller confirms a single line in writing. AB Tools is the worked unit example. TE817 pairs 2 ton with 4,000 lb and 1,814.37 kg, the US short ton of 2,000 lb, not 2,000 kg. TE694 does the same at 4 ton and 8,000 lb, about 3,629 kg, not four metric tonnes. If you read ton as a metric tonne, you will oversize the puller and still buy the wrong machine for a trailer post. Drum winches in this capture are kinder when the units agree. KATSU 325924 prints 630 kg beside 1,388 lb. FreeTec prints 1,130 kg beside 2,500 lb. Einhell stays at 500 kg with 10 m of wire. Amtech S1000 writes 550 kg in the title and 1,200 lb in a bullet, the same claim converted. When two numbers fight, walk away.

Line, hold, and mount

Answer three questions before you read the stars. Is the strap or the cable in the box? Aim Tools states that wire and hook are not supplied. Einhell, Amtech and JIAJU include wire. KATSU and FreeTec include polyester webbing. DASBET's title says 16 ft webbing while a bullet says tow rope. How does it claim to hold the load? A ratchet pawl, a return lock and an automatic-brake line are not interchangeable. UK reviews on AB Tools describe releasing the pawl with a screwdriver under tension. Refuse that habit. Can you bolt it down? Einhell's English manual asks for three M10 screws and warns that the base twists if you under-mount. Strap versus wire is on winch strap vs wire rope. Buy the line type the winch is built for, and believe the listing only when it names one line.

Work rules, not a certificate in the price

None of these consumer listings replaces legal advice. HSE publication L113 uses winching a load that stays on the ground as an example outside LOLER when the load does not leave the ground in a work context. Pulling your own boat on a private trailer is not automatically a LOLER inspection regime. The moment you lift a load clear in a workplace, different duties appear. PUWER still expects suitable equipment at work. BS EN 13157 describes hand-powered drum winches as lifting machines when they are used that way, including a ban on lifting people. The Einhell English manual matches that split: horizontal pull only, lifting prohibited, and not for commercial use, while the amazon.co.uk page mentions industrial use. Treat the manual as the safer document. etrailer's FAQ explains that rated capacity is often quoted on the first layer of cable and drops as you stack wraps. Do not paste that percentage table onto these ASINs. Leave at least three wraps on the drum, which Einhell's manual already demands. On the road, GOV.UK still expects a secure load. The winch strap is not the whole answer.

Common questions

Is this listing a trailer drum, a hoist, or a cable puller?
Look for a mounting plate and a drum. Two hooks and a ratcheting arm with no base, as on TE817 or TE694, mean a puller. If the box excludes wire, you have a drum body such as Aim Tools, not a ready trailer winch.
Which number is the capacity when the page prints two?
If both numbers are the same load in different units, such as 630 kg and 1,388 lb, they agree. If you see 270 kg and 1,130 kg on BOOMSTART, stop. If you see 2 ton beside 4,000 lb on AB Tools, that is the short ton, not 2,000 kg.
Does 2 ton or 4 ton mean a metric tonne?
Not on these AB Tools pages. 2 ton is paired with 4,000 lb, and 4 ton with 8,000 lb. That is the US short ton pattern, roughly 907 kg per ton written, not 1,000 kg.
Is the strap or the cable in the box?
Read the included-components line. Einhell, Amtech and JIAJU ship wire. KATSU and FreeTec ship webbing. Aim Tools ships neither wire nor hook. DASBET and BOOMSTART need a careful read because the material words conflict.
Will a ratchet hold if I let go of the handle?
Only when the pawl is engaged for the direction you are pulling, and not while you are paying out load on many ratchet designs. Fulton's instructions say the pawl will not hold the load while you are letting it out. A claimed brake is not tested here.
Does LOLER apply to a winch on my own boat trailer?
LOLER is aimed at lifting operations at work when the load is lifted. Winching along the ground is the example outside LOLER in L113. Your duty of care on the road still applies. Not LOLER does not mean anything goes.
Can I lift a load in the garage with a trailer winch?
Not if you follow Einhell's English manual and the lifting-machine logic in BS EN 13157. These ratchets are sold for pulling, not vertical hoisting. A proper hoist belongs in a different search.
