Boat trailer winch

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are fitting or replacing the winch on a trailer post, and the boat still has to come up the rollers and then stay put on the road. Those are two jobs. The winch recovers the hull up the incline. It is not, by itself, the road restraint GOV.UK expects when you [tow a trailer](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tow-a-trailer-with-a-car-safety-checks). Axforth's UK trailer guide states that the winch pulls the boat onto the supports and does not replace the tie-downs the trailer maker specifies. Our [hand winch comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/hand-winch) lists twelve amazon.co.uk options, and only some belong on a post. Peter F. read those listings on 19 October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The winch only recovers the boat

On the slipway you crank until the bow meets the roller or bunk. On the drive home the load must stay secure if the strap slackens or the ratchet slips. Fulton-style instructions and Goliath brake-winch manuals agree: do not treat the winch as the transport tie-down. Fit the bow-eye safety chain or strap your trailer documentation shows, plus stern lines if they are required, after the boat is seated. The breakaway cable on the coupling is another part. GOV.UK mentions it in the safety checks. It is not your winch line. Do not stand in the line of a loaded strap or wire. Axforth warns against it. UK reviews on DASBET, FreeTec and KATSU describe gears stripping or locks failing in that snap zone. Align the trailer, float the boat if your ramp technique requires it, and take the slack out gently.

A capacity you can explain

Dutton-Lainson's selection guide, a US source, often cites about 2:1 winch capacity to boat weight for roller trailers, nearer 1:1 on long bunk setups, and up towards 3:1 on good roller systems with a short pull. Treat that as their marketing maths, not a UK legal minimum. A 270 kg winch on a heavy fibreglass dayboat is a different proposition from the same winch on a jet ski that is already floating. Read one printed figure and map it to the hull and the trailer angle. KATSU 325920 lists 600 lb / 270 kg with a 6 m strap, sensible only when the pull is small and the ski is mostly floating. One UK review says the lock failed and a backup rope saved the day. KATSU 325924 at 630 kg / 1,388 lb is the mid strap drum many owners choose at about £24.99. A reviewer who wanted to haul about 1,300 kg found the ratio insufficient. That load sits above the listing. FreeTec at 1,130 kg offers more printed headroom at about £42.74. Reviews praise the strap and distrust the lock on a RIB launch. Einhell's 500 kg wire drum suits a horizontal pull with the cable included. It is not the classic strap post winch. Drum versus puller is settled in the hand winch buying guide. Do not import a US cutoff such as 1,200 lb for any trailer as if it were a GOV.UK rule. The trailer plate, the boat weight and the ramp angle still dominate.

Listings that bolt to a post

A drum with a plate and a line in the box belongs on the post. Strap drums in this set include DASBET at 800 lb, both KATSU models, AKRIXKIP at 1,600 lb, FreeTec at 1,130 kg, and BOOMSTART only after you resolve its 270 kg versus 1,130 kg clash. Wire drums include Amtech at 550 kg, JIAJU at 540 kg with no reviews in the capture, and Einhell at 500 kg. Aim Tools sells a 1,200 lb body without wire or a hook. AB Tools TE817 and TE694 are cable pullers with hooks. They do not bolt to the winch post. BOOMSTART is the cautionary listing: two capacities, two line types, and a URL ASIN that does not match the catalog ASIN. DASBET is cheap at about £18.59, with 3.7 from 20 reviews and gear and stitching failures on jet-ski pulls that ought to be easy. Electric winches and self-braking drums sit outside this table. If you need a brake that holds when you let go of the handle, shop that category rather than reading automatic brake on a cheap ratchet.

On the ramp

Keep a straight lead, float the hull where your technique demands it, and crank while the pawl clicks in the pull direction. Do not pay out under load and expect the ratchet to hold. Jet-ski stories in this file are useful because the load was light. DASBET reviewers report cogs snapping with the ski mostly floating, and the 270 kg KATSU reports both a lock failure and a successful pull. A test pull on the drive beats trusting stars alone. Salt water versus fresh water is rarely spelled out on these listings. Galvanised wire and a zinc-plated frame help on paper. Retire frayed wire and cut webbing whether you launch on a river or the sea.

Common questions

What capacity do I need for my boat?
Start from the trailer type, the ramp angle and the hull weight, then compare one printed winch figure from the listing. Manufacturer ratios, such as Dutton-Lainson's roller and bunk hints, are a sanity check, not a UK statute.
Is a 270 kg winch enough for a jet ski?
Sometimes, when the ski floats and the pull is short. UK reviews on the KATSU 270 kg model show both a lock failure, saved by a backup rope, and a successful recovery in the same file. Carry a separate restraint.
Do I still need a bow chain if the strap is tight?
Yes for the road journey. Trailer guides treat the bow safety connection as separate from the winch line once the boat is loaded. The winch recovers the hull. It does not replace the tie-down.
Is the trailer breakaway cable the same part?
No. It attaches to the towing vehicle as part of the GOV.UK safety checks. It is not a substitute winch line and it is not the bow chain.
Can I use the AB Tools puller on the winch post?
No. TE817 and TE694 have no mounting base. They are lever pullers with two hooks and a short stroke of cable, not a drum that bolts to the trailer post.
Does LOLER inspect my trailer winch every year?
Not for a private leisure trailer on the ramp in the way workplace lifting gear can be regulated. LOLER targets lifting operations at work. Road security and suitable equipment at work are separate duties.
Why did a cheap winch fail when the ski was floating?
Gear quality and the lock still matter when the load looks small. DASBET reviews report cogs snapping on a mostly floating jet ski, and a KATSU 270 kg review reports a lock failure on the same kind of pull.
What does the listing say about salt water or fresh water?
Mostly material words such as galvanised or zinc-plated, without a maintenance schedule. Rinse, dry, and inspect the line and the drum whether you use the trailer on a river or the sea.
