Engine support bar buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are under a transverse car with a clutch or mount job ahead, and amazon.co.uk mixes wing beams, under-vehicle props and engine stands in one scroll. This engine support bar buying guide is the order to follow before you open a listing: whether the engine stays in the car, the stated load, the span on the reinforced rails, where the feet sit, then the chain or rope and the bar type. The [engine support bar comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/engine-support-bar) holds the seven listings and the prices from 19 October 2026. Peter F. checked those listings and public UK sources. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Decide whether the engine stays in the car

An engine support bar holds an engine or gearbox while it remains in the vehicle: a mount, timing-belt access, or the engine side of a transverse clutch drop. When the engine is coming out, you need an engine crane and an engine stand, not a wing traverse. If the gearbox must be lowered, use a transmission jack as well. The bar does not replace it. SJ Tools lists Sealey and Draper stands beside support beams in one category. The split is the job, not the shelf.

Read the stated load against the part you will hold

Printed figures are 300 kg on the Draper 13349, 315 kg on the BGS 8515, 400 kg on the US PRO under-vehicle listing, and 500 kg on the Draper 13350, the Neilsen CT4283 and the US PRO wing beam. The BGS 8606 prints 690–1,050 mm and no kilogram. Do not treat a blank line as 500 kg. The 400 kg prop is not a wing span, and the 315 kg traverse is not a 500 kg beam. Match the figure to the mass you will hang once the handbook names the lifting point. Which listing fits which shape is on best engine support bar.

Measure the span and the place the feet sit

Span is the distance between the reinforced points where the feet sit, not the outer wing skin. Printed ranges are 730–1,480 mm on the US PRO 500 kg beam and on Draper’s page for the 13350, even when the Amazon width cell is empty; 750–1,450 mm on the Neilsen CT4283; 1,000–1,550 mm on the BGS 8515; and 690–1,050 mm on the BGS 8606. The under-vehicle listing states no span. Draper’s 13349 and 13350 instructions put rubber supports in the wing gutter, not on top of the wings. BGS 8515 asks for a flat reinforced surface inside the wing. Extending past the marked maximum is a BGS failure mode. The sequence is on how to use an engine support bar.

Chain, rope, and which bar type you are buying

The Draper 13350 includes two chains. The Draper 13349 Amazon line includes one, while hosted instructions also describe two. Count the box before you trust one sling. The BGS 8515 includes two pendant ropes. The Neilsen names 90 cm chains and M20 x 2.5 hook rods. The US PRO wing beam at about £69.99 names no chains. Rate any chain above that load. Types do not swap. Wing beams are the Draper 13350 and the US PRO 500 kg beam. The Neilsen CT4283 rotates 360 degrees. The BGS 8515 is the 315 kg 2- and 3-point bar. The BGS 8606 is the short steep-wing bar, with no kilogram and a 1 kg item weight this comparison does not treat as true mass. The US PRO 400 kg listing is the under-vehicle prop.

Match the type, then read the price band

Prices on 19 October 2026 run from £69.99 for the US PRO 500 kg beam, through £72.49 for the Neilsen and £94.99 for the under-vehicle prop, to about £101–£110 for the Draper rows and the BGS 8515, and £140.28 for the BGS 8606. Sealey ES500 and ES601, and Power-TEC’s four-foot shop beam, sit outside these seven listings. If your points fall outside the printed span, leave that row.

Common questions

Which kilogram should I trust when a listing prints no load?
None that you invent. The BGS 8606 prints 690–1,050 mm and no kilogram. Choose a listing with a printed figure, or stop until you have maker documentation you trust. A neighbouring 500 kg title does not fill a blank line on the page you are buying.
How do I measure the span before I buy?
Measure between the reinforced gutter points where the feet will sit, inside the listing’s minimum and maximum. If you measure 1,600 mm and the bar stops at 1,550 mm, you need another row. The outer painted skin is not the measuring point.
Does a higher price in this comparison mean a higher stated load?
Not automatically. The dearest row is the BGS 8606 at about £140.28, and that listing prints no kilogram. The 19 October 2026 prices are a snapshot. Load and span are the lines to check before you hang weight. A cheaper 500 kg beam is not a wider bar.
Does LOLER give me a certificate for a bar I use at home?
No. LOLER 1998 is for lifting equipment used at work in Great Britain. amazon.co.uk does not send a home examination record. OC 803/69 covers engine stands and garage brackets, not this wing bar, so a garage should ask a competent person. An EN 13155 claim does not replace the printed load.
When is the held part too heavy, or the wing too rusty, to keep shopping?
Stop when the lifting point is unknown, the rails are crushed or badly corroded, the gearbox must drop and you have no support underneath, or the bar is work equipment with an unknown examination status. A higher kilogram in a title does not repair a rotten gutter, and it is not a reason to extend the beam past its mark.
