How to choose a hand winch with strap

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to spend £25 to £37 on a hand winch with strap, and the label already shows more than one kind of load. Some listings stay silent on lifting, while one in this set prints pulling only, not lifting. The [belt winch comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/belt-winch) holds the three prices and review counts. This page is the order of decisions before you pick a row. Peter F. checked those amazon.co.uk listings on 20 October 2026. There was no load test. What you are buying

A belt winch is a drum, gears, handle and flat webbing that spools onto the drum, usually with a hook or buckle at the end. It is not a spare strap sold on its own, not wire rope on a cable drum, and not a tow rope you loop by hand. The machine does the winding. The strap width must match the drum, which is why the kept listings mention 50 mm by about 8 m. If you only need a replacement length of polyester, you are in the wrong category. If you need steel cable, look at wire-rope hand winches instead.

Which load figure counts

Seller pages disagree on sizing. One UK guide suggests capacity at least one and a half times the load you expect to move. Another boat-winch article talks about three quarters of boat weight, with more margin on a steep ramp. Neither figure is UK law, and neither replaces the kilograms or pounds printed on the amazon.co.uk listing. Specialist shop pages can make the confusion worse. A Maypole-style hand winch at Winches UK lists a rated working capacity of 625 kg, a recommended maximum of 1,100 kg and a rolling load of 1,625 kg on one page, with the winch at £81.98 including VAT and the strap extra. Those three lines are different claims. For the three kept listings, FreeTec states 453 kg, KATSU states 630 kg, and Ejoyous states 1,200 lb in the title without a kilogram line in the technical block. Treat the lowest figure you trust as your ceiling. If a seller prints breaking strength or rolling load elsewhere, that is a different test from everyday pulling on a trailer.

Pulling, lifting, and the label

HSE guidance on lifting equipment draws a line between a load that stays supported and one that hangs free. Winching a boat up rollers while the hull stays on the trailer is a different duty from suspending an engine in a workshop. LOLER applies to lifting equipment at work when the load is lifted. PUWER still applies to work equipment either way. Private slipway use at the weekend is not the same paperwork as an employer's lift, but a strap winch sold for pulling is a poor hoist. Only FreeTec FY9210 in this set prints pulling only, not lifting, in the bullets, alongside 453 kg and a polyester strap 50 mm by 8 m. KATSU names boats, caravans and ATVs but does not forbid lifting on the page. Ejoyous does not either. If your job would leave the load hanging, stop and choose equipment meant for that task. Read webbing or cable if you are unsure the line should be flat webbing at all.

What £25 to £85 buys

This comparison stops at £36.86 because nothing else in the batch met the strap-winch brief under £40. That band buys a simple ratchet hand winch with webbing included, not a self-braking boat winch and not a braked shop unit with a separate strap line. Above the set, specialist retailers sell hand winches with brakes and higher headline loads, often in the £70 to £85 range before you add an 8 m strap. Those machines are a different design. They can make sense when you want the drum to hold when you let go of the handle, which none of these three listings claim. Within the set, the listing with the clearest limit and line description is also the lowest stated load and the highest shelf price. The cheapest price sits on the listing with the most UK failure reports. Your job, and how much margin you need under the printed figure, decides the row. Named picks are on which strap winch in this set. If the slipway is the use case, map the job onto a belt winch on a boat trailer.

Common questions

What does a strap winch include that a winch strap does not?
The winch adds the drum, gears, handle and mounting plate. A spare strap is just the line. You cannot crank a replacement strap without the machine behind it.
Which number is the load I must stay under?
Use the working or rated capacity the seller prints for pulling, not a rolling load or breaking strength from another line on the page. When in doubt, stay under the smallest figure you believe.
Why do sellers say both 1.5 times and three quarters?
They are rules of thumb from different articles, not regulations. They contradict each other, and neither replaces the label on your listing.
Is a 4.1:1 ratio the force at the handle?
No. FreeTec prints 4.1:1, and a KATSU review mentions the same ratio, but that is gear reduction, not a measured handle load.
Can I use it to lift if the kilograms look high enough?
Only if the listing allows it. In this set, only FreeTec forbids lifting in the bullets. A higher kilogram line on KATSU does not turn the winch into a hoist.
When is £25 to £37 the wrong budget?
When you need a braked trailer winch, a self-braking boat winch, or a load above what you trust on a simple ratchet. Then the shop band around £70 to £85 plus strap is the next place to look, not a fourth row here.
Does LOLER apply to a private boat trailer?
LOLER bites on lifting equipment used at work. A private supported pull on a trailer is a different conversation from an employer's suspended load, though you still owe yourself a safe setup.
What should I check on the strap before I care about the colour?
Width against the drum, cuts, stiff UV damage and stitching at the hook end. A pretty blue drum does not fix a folded strap or a line that is rope when you expected polyester webbing.
