Cutting a wildflower meadow in the UK: timing and tools

Updated: October 2026

Cutting a wildflower meadow is not the same as rescuing a lawn you forgot to mow. An established meadow is allowed to flower and set seed before a main cut, then the cut material is removed. Timing, wildlife and the volume of stems may make an ordinary lawn mower the wrong first tool. The domestic models in the [tall grass mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/tall-grass-mower) cost about £50–£158 and are designed around lawn-height settings. This guide is the cut window and the tool for a small UK meadow.

A meadow is not a late lawn

A lawn is cut often to stay dense and low. An established meadow gets one or two major cuts so flowers can finish more of their cycle. A weekly 25 mm cut removes blooms and seed heads. Leaving the growth in place adds nutrients and smothers smaller plants. If you want a playable surface after a holiday, use a staged lawn recovery. If you left the patch for flowers, keep a meadow calendar and accept tall growth for part of the year. How to cut long grass is the lawn method. A new sowing is different. RHS guidance says first-year annual and perennial meadow areas may need regular cuts to roughly 4–5 cm in the first summer, while plants establish. Follow the seed supplier. For an established meadow, watch flowering and wildlife and shift the work inside the window.

When to cut, and what to do with the hay

RHS guidance allows a spring cut to about 7.5 cm by the end of April where grass is crowding meadow flowers. Remove those clippings. It is optional management, not an order to cut every meadow as early flowers emerge. The main cut usually falls between late June and the end of August. Plantlife often describes a July hay cut. RHS gives the wider window because flowering varies. Wait until the flowers you want have set seed, then pick a dry spell. Leave the hay briefly so seed can drop. Plantlife describes removal after about a week. RHS says a few days. Then rake it off so it does not smother new growth or return fertility. An autumn cut, where grass returns strongly, should also be removed. Mulching puts back what you are trying to take away. No Mow May lets lawn plants flower. A patch left in May still needs a later cut if you want to stop rank grass.

Choose a tool that can finish the job

A domestic rotary can take a very small meadow only after the stems fit the deck. Set it high, use narrow passes, and remove the clippings. The highest listed setting here is 70 mm on the FORTE, which also has reports of smoke, a broken handle and a wheel falling off. A strimmer is more flexible around trees and posts. Dense grass may need an approved brushcutter blade. Strimmer or mower for long grass is that decision. A powered sickle-bar lays long stems with a cutter bar. Researched UK prices were £699.95 for the 87 cm Chipperfield HCS870 and £1,094.99 for the 87 cm AL-KO BM 875 IV. The mower for long grass buying guide separates the classes. None of the eleven amazon.co.uk mowers is a sickle-bar.

Check nests, hedgehogs and refuge areas

Walk the meadow before you cut. In Great Britain, intentionally damaging an active wild bird's nest is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Northern Ireland has separate legislation. Leave a substantial buffer and delay that section. Hedgehogs may curl up rather than run from a strimmer, so check long grass and the ground under hedges first. Work from the centre towards an exit. Plantlife recommends an uncut refuge strip you can rotate each year. On a small patch, mark a margin or an island. Do not rely on noise to clear animals.

Common questions

When should I cut a wildflower meadow in the UK?
For an established meadow, the main cut commonly falls between late June and the end of August, often around July after the flowers you want have set seed. Weather and flowering stage matter more than a fixed date. RHS also allows a spring cut by late April where vigorous grass needs control.
Should I leave meadow cuttings on the ground?
Leave them briefly so seed can drop, then remove them. RHS describes a few days and Plantlife about a week, depending on the weather and the swath. Leaving the hay down, or mulching it all back, smothers small plants and adds nutrients.
Can I use a normal lawn mower on a mini meadow?
Only where the patch is small and the growth has already been reduced to a manageable height. Use the mower high, take narrow passes and remove the clippings. A domestic top setting of 60–70 mm does not mean the deck can ingest a full season of dense meadow growth.
Do I need a powered scythe mower?
Not for a small annual job. A hand scythe, a brushcutter or a contractor can be the better choice there. Researched new sickle-bar examples started at about £700, well above these lawn mowers, and they need storage and yearly maintenance.
Is it illegal to mow while birds are nesting?
There is no blanket UK calendar ban on all mowing, but active wild-bird nests and their contents are legally protected. The precise legislation differs between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. If you find an occupied nest, leave it undisturbed with a generous buffer and postpone that section until it is no longer active.
What is the spring meadow cut for?
A spring cut controls vigorous grass that may crowd flowering plants before the main season. RHS suggests cutting to around 7.5 cm by the end of April where needed, and removing the clippings. It is a management option based on the meadow's growth, not a compulsory cut for every site.
