Brush cutter buying guide for UK gardens

Updated: October 2026

A brush cutter buying guide should begin with the growth in front of you, not the colour of the machine or the largest voltage on the box. A lawn edge, nettles and woody brambles need different heads, power and ways of carrying the tool. The [Stihl brush cutter comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/stihl-brush-cutter) lists eight amazon.co.uk products, and none of them is made by STIHL. Decide what must be cut, how to power it, what the price includes, then whether the handle and harness suit you. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are cutting

Nylon line is the starting point for grass, soft weeds and edges near fencing or paving. It cuts by speed, and worn line can usually be advanced or replaced. Line becomes frustrating in mature brambles, because stems can shred it faster than you can advance it. A metal grass blade is the step up for dense grass, nettles and brushy growth. The Bosch AFS 23-37 lists a 23 cm blade alongside its 37 cm line system, and the Ryobi and both Einhell models also describe separate blade and line heads. That only helps if the tool is designed for the attachment and you use the matching guard. A small accessory disc is not the blade and gearbox of a full brush cutter. Do not jump to a circular saw blade for ordinary garden work. If you mainly trim around a greenhouse, car or rendered wall, line is the more controllable purchase. The brush cutter vs strimmer guide is the job-by-job decision.

Mains, petrol or a battery you already own

Mains can be the economical answer for a domestic plot. The £124.90 Bosch is rated at 950 W and has no battery-runtime limit. The lead must reach safely and stay behind the cutting head, with an outdoor-rated connection. A cable is unsuitable across gates, paths or tangled scrub. Battery tools remove the lead and start without fuel mixing. Their value depends on whether you already own the platform. The Ryobi OBC1820B uses 18 V ONE+ packs, the Agillo models sit in Einhell's Power X-Change family, and both are sold here without batteries. Voltage alone does not tell you runtime, because capacity, head type and cutting load also matter. Petrol remains useful when the work is remote, prolonged and too demanding for the batteries you are prepared to carry. The two eSkde listings claim 52 cc two-stroke engines and need petrol mixed with the correct oil. Their listings do not state the ratio, so never copy a mixture from another model. You also accept pull-starting, fumes, engine maintenance and more noise.

What the Amazon price leaves out

Compare a working setup, not the number beside the button. The Ryobi costs £155 but excludes its battery and charger. The Einhell Agillo 18/200 at £131.95 and Agillo 36/255 at £158.99 are also body-only. Put the exact compatible pack and charger into the basket before comparing totals. The Greenworks kit costs £250.10 and includes two 40 V 2 Ah batteries, a charger, a metal blade, a line head and a belt. The SUAIIOLK at £128.92 claims two 4.0 Ah batteries, but the cutting width is missing and reviewers report soft blades. Included capacity is not proof of runtime. The eSkde machines do not list fuel or two-stroke oil. Treat contradictory specification tables with care. The Bosch listing mentions a battery despite describing a corded 950 W tool, and the 36 V Einhell has a conflicting 12 V line. The title and the included-components list should outweigh an isolated marketplace field.

Handle, harness and the name on the tool

Bike handles give a broad sweep across open rough grass. They appear on the Ryobi and Agillo 18/200, but they need space. A loop or D handle is easier around shrubs, posts and sloping corners, provided the machine is approved for the intended head. A harness transfers weight away from your arms. It does not make a heavy tool light. The Greenworks is listed at 8.04 kg and the Ryobi at 7.08 kg. Some Einhell reviewers report that the harness does not suit shorter or left-handed users. The hook position and the emergency release matter more than padding. An orange-and-grey eSkde is not a STIHL, and none of the eight products is a STIHL. An Amazon snapshot from 16 October 2026 showed an FS 55 R at £325 and an FS 56 C-E at £420. Those prices can change. If dealer parts are central, compare genuine STIHL models separately.

Common questions

Is a brush cutter the same as a strimmer?
The names overlap in shops, but a strimmer usually centres on nylon line for grass and edges. A brush cutter is built to accept a rigid blade for tougher growth. Some machines include both heads, so the approved attachment is more informative than the product label.
Do I need a metal blade for brambles?
For mature, fibrous brambles, an approved metal grass blade or brush knife is usually more effective than ordinary line. Use only a blade and guard specified for the machine, and first clear hidden wire, stone and other hard objects.
Does a body-only price include a battery?
No. Body-only means the powered tool is supplied without the battery, and usually without a charger. It suits owners already using that battery family. New buyers should compare the total for the tool, the correct packs and the charger.
Is 40 V automatically better than 18 V?
No. Voltage describes part of the electrical system, not runtime or cutting results by itself. Battery capacity, motor and gearbox design, cutting head and vegetation load all affect performance. Compare the complete machine and the intended job.
What does a harness change?
A correctly adjusted harness carries much of the machine's weight and sets the head near working height. This reduces how hard you grip and lift during a sweeping cut. Poor fit can still cause fatigue, particularly on a heavy or badly balanced tool.
Why does a genuine STIHL cost more here?
You are comparing different products, engines, support routes and included equipment rather than just orange casings. The stored Amazon STIHL prices are context only. Decide whether access to model-specific parts and servicing is worth the premium for how often you cut.
