RJ19LM vs RC12YC

Updated: October 2026

You have a Briggs & Stratton walk-behind or ride-on, and two plugs in adjacent amazon.co.uk tabs, both described as the Briggs plug. RJ19LM vs RC12YC is not a choice of brand or of price. It is a choice of engine family. This page, updated in October 2026, follows the Briggs & Stratton UK chart and the two listings in the [spark plug lawnmower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/spark-plug-lawnmower) that put those codes in the title. Peter F. did not measure reach in a lab. The UK chart excerpt used here prints gaps and part numbers, not a reach column, so this page does not invent one. They are not two prices for one plug

RJ19LM sits on the flathead side of the Briggs UK chart, with J19LM beside it. RC12YC sits on the overhead-valve side, where Briggs also lists part numbers such as 491055S and 692051. A flathead is the older side-valve layout on many Classic, Sprint and Quattro engines. An overhead-valve engine does not take the flathead plug because both boxes say Briggs. Briggs UK states that several plugs may screw in, and that the wrong plug can cause running problems and possible internal damage. If the old plug says RJ19LM, do not buy the RC12YC pair. If it says RC12YC, do not buy an RJ19LM multi-pack because it is cheaper. Quantum is a third check.

When the engine is a flathead

On the standard resistor row, Briggs UK prints RJ19LM at 0.030 in (0.76 mm). J19LM is the non-resistor neighbour. The letter R is the difference. Quantum is where an RJ19LM title becomes unreliable. The part and the gap change with the code date. Some rows are RJ19LMC or RJ2YLE, and some, including one 692051 line, are 0.020 in (0.51 mm). That tighter gap is a specific row, not a setting for every Briggs mower. In this set the RJ19LM name is the UYUYong three-pack at about £4.89, 4.3 from 153 reviews. The bullets name Classic, Sprint, Quattro and Quantum. UK reviews include a mower that ran, a hex that would not take a 13/16 in socket, and one Macallister that stopped because the plugs overheated. It is a flathead spare when the stamp matches, and the wrong buy for an overhead-valve engine. Who should leave it is on best lawn mower spark plug.

When the engine is overhead valve

RC12YC is the overhead-valve code on many larger Briggs engines. The UK chart does not give every row the same gap. Some 491055S and 692051 lines are 0.030 in, and another 692051 row is 0.020 in. Use the gap on your line. The listing that prints RC12YC is the Briggs & Stratton pair at about £7.99, 4.8 from 2,482 reviews, with a 12-month warranty cell. It is the top pick here when the parts list says RC12YC. The title says two plugs and the Number of Items cell says 1. All Mowers Parts describes an NGK BCPR5ES at about £3.96 as equivalent to RC12YC. That is one shop’s cross, not a Briggs part number. A BPR5ES in this set is a different code.

What still goes wrong if you pick the right code

The right letters do not finish the job. On the RJ19LM three-pack, a 13/16 socket that fitted the old Champion can round the new hex. Take the socket to the plug. The fitting order, including the Briggs ceiling of 15 ft lb, is on how to change a lawn mower spark plug. On the RC12YC pair, one UK review says the terminal was too large for a new coil boot that had seated a Champion RC12YC. If the boot will not click, the engine will not run. Overhead cam is a different miss: one review bought this pair in error for that layout. A BPMR7A is a short-reach two-stroke plug, not a cheaper version of either code. If the old plug says neither RJ19LM nor RC12YC, neither listing here is your plug.

Common questions

Is RJ19LM the same as RC12YC?
No. RJ19LM is the resistor flathead code on the Briggs UK chart. RC12YC is an overhead-valve code. They are not two prices for one part, and a shared 14 mm thread does not make them interchangeable. Briggs warns that the wrong plug can screw in and still cause internal damage. Use the code on the old plug or the parts list.
Which one is for a walk-behind Briggs?
Many older side-valve walk-behinds use RJ19LM or J19LM. Many overhead-valve engines use RC12YC. The mower’s shape does not decide it. A walk-behind can be either family, and a ride-on can be overhead valve. Read the stamp. Quantum walk-behinds need the code date as well, because RJ19LMC and RJ2YLE are separate rows.
What gap is each?
On the standard resistor flathead row, Briggs UK prints 0.030 in (0.76 mm) for RJ19LM. Overhead-valve rows that cover RC12YC replacements are 0.030 in on some lines, including parts of the 491055S and 692051 coverage, and 0.020 in (0.51 mm) on another 692051 row. Quantum can also be 0.020 in. Set the gap on your row, not a single figure for both codes.
Can I replace a Champion with the Briggs pair?
You can when the Champion you are replacing is an RC12YC and the Briggs pair is sold as that code. You cannot when the Champion is an RJ19LM. One UK review also found the Briggs terminal too large for a new coil boot that had taken a Champion RC12YC, so check the boot even when the code matches. The Number of Items cell on that pair says 1 while the title says two.
Will RC12YC fit an overhead-cam engine?
Not on the evidence in this file. One UK review of the RC12YC pair says it was the wrong purchase for an overhead-cam engine. Overhead cam and overhead valve are different layouts. If the manual says overhead cam, follow that parts list. Do not use the overhead-valve code because the plug threads in.
