How to use a lawn sweeper

Updated: October 2026

The box is open on the patio, the bolt count looks short, and the sheet is a set of drawings you do not trust. How to use a lawn sweeper starts there, before you judge the brushes. You are about to push a manual collector, not a mower and not a blower. Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk listings and the manuals named below, as read on 22 October 2026. We did not trial your lawn. The [leaf collector comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/leaf-collector) is the table if you are still choosing. This page assumes the machine is already yours, or it is in pieces at your feet.

Build it before you judge it

Count the bolts against the sheet, and keep the listing photos open. One VEVOR GT1110 buyer said the instructions were unusable. A worksky review reports a missing bolt. An Ark Mat review calls the instructions unclear. A Gardena 03566-20 review says that machine was built in under five minutes. If a fastener is missing, ask the seller. Do not drill a new hole so the brush axle sits close enough. The VEVOR GT1110 manual is the outline for that model only. One Gardena 03565-88 review describes a unit broken inside an undamaged box. If the chassis is cracked, stop. A flat garden does not need a contractor. A steep bank, or a machine that arrived broken, is when you get help.

Set the height on one strip

Brushes that sit too high leave a trail. Brushes that dig flick debris forward. VEVOR's use page says to set the brushes so they touch the grass lightly, then test a strip. Do not copy a half-an-inch setting from a US article. These listings do not share one height number. The Ark Mat prints 6.35 cm to 16.35 cm, and the positions field says 1. The worksky prints about an inch, from -0.28 inch to +1.06 inch. The VEVOR prints five positions and a maximum of 29.5 inches, which is a listing conflict, not a target. The Gardena 03565-88 says height can be adjusted and does not print the range. If the test strip is clean, leave the knob. If it shows untouched leaves, lower the brushes a little and run the same strip again.

Push, watch the bag, empty

Push forward at a walking pace. The VEVOR GT1110 manual says the machine does not collect when you pull it backward. Handy's manual for the THPLS, a different sweeper, says the same. One Ark Mat reviewer found that a backwards-then-forwards pass picked up more on that machine. If you own the VEVOR, follow its manual and go forward. If leaves fly over the bag, slow down or change the height. Do not add weight to the frame. Empty before the bag is a dead weight. Worksky reviews say emptying took most of the time, and one bag split after two uses. Another mouth would not stay open. Handy's manual says not to store damp leaves in the hopper. Tip the load out the same day, even though that warning belongs to a different model. If the leaves are wet and stuck, read lawn sweeper wet leaves.

What you still do by hand

The strip by the fence still needs a rake. Ark Mat reviews mention a missed edge and leaves that fly past the bag. Soft brushes on that model are described as too soft for acorns. Gardena's UK page says solid objects such as acorns are not collected, and paving may need several passes. The Spear & Jackson grabber is not a sweeper and it has no brush height. You gather a pile, close the scoops, and lift. UK reviews say tipping a full grab into a tall bin is the hard part. Mow first if the grass hides the leaves, and pick up sticks before they reach the brushes. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Which way do I push it?
Forward, at a walk, for the VEVOR GT1110. Its manual says it does not collect when pulled backward. One Ark Mat user reported that a short backwards-then-forwards movement picked up more. Use the manual for the model you assembled, and slow down if leaves launch over the bag.
How high should the brushes be?
High enough to touch the grass lightly, then checked on one strip. Too high leaves a trail. Too low flicks leaves forward. The Ark Mat prints 6.35 cm to 16.35 cm. The worksky prints about an inch. A US half-an-inch tip is not on these pages.
Why are leaves flying past the bag?
Usually pace or height. Going too fast throws leaves over the mouth. Brushes set too hard flick them forward, which reviews say about the Gardena 03565-88. A bag mouth that will not stay open, which worksky reviewers describe, spills what you collected.
How do I empty it without spilling?
Empty while you can still lift the bag. Tip into a barrow or a low trug if the green bin is tall. Worksky reviews say emptying took most of the time, and one bag split after two uses. Do not leave damp leaves in the hopper overnight.
What if the instructions make no sense?
Use the listing photos and, for the VEVOR GT1110, that model's manual. Stop if a part is missing. A worksky review cites a missing bolt, and a VEVOR review calls the sheet unusable. A cracked chassis is when you stop and use the order.
What about the strip by the fence?
Rake it. Wheels and a fixed head miss the edge, which an Ark Mat review notes on artificial grass as well as on a lawn. The sweeper is for the open run. The rake is for the fence, the tree stake and the patio corner.
