Steel or poly garden trailer

Updated: October 2026

You have already decided the cart must tip, and the advert still asks you to choose a plastic shell or a steel box. A steel or poly garden trailer is that choice: wet muck you will rinse, or logs and rubble that hit the floor. Mesh wagons are only a short aside here. The six amazon.co.uk rows are on the [lawn tractor trailer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/lawn-tractor-trailer). Products Compared read those listings on 22 October 2026. There is no UK durability trial of crack versus rust in this set. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What each bed is

A poly dump cart is a moulded polyethylene or polypropylene bed on a steel frame. The Sherpa STT400 is sold as UV-stabilised polyethylene at 400 kg and about £268.98 including VAT. The SCH DTSB is sold as a 350 kg welded steel trailer at about £399. Those shop prices are not the Amazon rows. Poly does not rust in the bed, and it can crack. Steel rusts where the coating chips. Powder coat is a claim, not a winter guarantee. The Yard Commander states a polypropylene bed on a powder-coated steel frame. Mesh is expanded metal, and soil goes through it.

Wet soil and manure

Wet soil and manure want a floor you can hose. A poly shell is the simpler match if the frame is sound and the mower can pull the weight. You still watch the steel chassis and the hitch for rust. Sherpa's UV-stabilised claim is for the STT400, not for every grey poly cart. Steel carries manure too, and it corrodes where the coating fails. British winters wet the floor. Choose steel when you will repaint chips and when impact matters more than the rinse.

Logs, rubble and thin decks

Logs and rubble hit a floor. A steel bed is the usual answer when the plate is thick, or when you add a plywood liner. A VEVOR UK listing outside this set has a reviewer who lined a thin deck. The yellow Pisumsativum claims thickened plates. A United States review talks about a latch, not a measured thickness, so thickened stays a claim. The Yard Commander's United States reviews include both sturdy and a toy, against 6 cubic feet. Who to skip is on the best lawn tractor trailer page.

Which listing is which

The Yard Commander at about £208.99 is the poly row: 6 cubic feet, a 45 degree dump, 3.8 from 11 United States reviews. Use it for a small wet load. The yellow Pisumsativum at about £351.99 has a size complaint. The Pisumsativum at about £505.99 has no reviews. The Generic listing at about £332.76 prints 17 and 10 cubic feet plus a 50 g item weight. The LLEZKBR listing at about £397.39 says 130 cm, and the catalogue says 30 mm. Do not pick a material from a size that is not one size. The VIVOHOME at about £129.99 is mesh, the aside for bags and logs, and the wrong bed for manure. The handbook tow limit still beats both materials. Load and slope sit on the how to tow a trailer with a ride-on mower page.

Common questions

Will poly crack in the sun?
It can. UV-stabilised polyethylene is a claim on some shop trailers, including the Sherpa STT400, and it is not printed as a test result on the Yard Commander row. Cold, a sharp log or a thin shell can crack or flex a plastic bed. Rinse-friendly poly is still the better wet-soil bed when the cart is stiff enough for your load, and you should look at the steel frame as well.
Will steel rust in a British winter?
Where the coating is chipped, yes. Powder coat and rust-resistant bullets slow that down until stone, a tailgate and wet manure break the film. Rinse manure out and touch up chips if you want a steel bed to last. Mesh reviews on the VIVOHOME already mention corrosion, which is a different floor with the same weather.
Which holds manure and wet soil?
A sealed poly bed that you can hose, provided the frame is sound. Steel holds it too if you accept rinsing and rust at damaged paint. Mesh does not hold it. Six cubic feet on the Yard Commander is a small manure job. A larger steel claim is only useful if the cubic feet are real and the mower may pull the weight.
Which takes logs and rubble?
A steel bed that is thick enough, or a thin steel bed with a plywood liner, as reviewers suggest on light dump carts outside this folder. A stiff poly cart can take firewood if you lower it in rather than drop it. The flimsy comments on the small Yard Commander are a reason to keep logs off that particular shell. Mesh can carry logs if they sit on the bars, and it will not hold the rubble fines.
Is mesh a kind of steel trailer?
It is a metal grid, not a tipping steel box. The VIVOHOME bed is iron mesh with removable sides and no dump. Soil and sticks fall through. Treat it as a wagon for bags and timber, and choose poly or steel when the load must stay in the bed and then tip out.
