How to scarify a lawn

Updated: October 2026

The lawn looks fine from the window until you part the grass and find a brown mat, and the fear is that one afternoon will leave mud until spring. This is how to scarify a lawn in the UK without starting on the deepest notch. You mow first, you work dry turf in early autumn, you lift brown thatch rather than green tips, and you clear the debris before you seed. Machines in our [lawn scarifier comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/lawn-scarifier) list steps down to −12 mm. That number is not the first pass. We did not trial these machines. The sequence follows the Royal Horticultural Society, the UK Lawn Care Association and Husqvarna UK, plus the review pattern that collectors still miss thatch.

When, and whether you need to

Scarify when you cannot see soil between the grass blades. The RHS puts that job in early autumn and tells you to stop if the ground is waterlogged, frozen or baked. September is a fair start in much of the UK, including Scotland and northern England. October is still right if the soil is fit to walk on without smearing. You do not scarify because a listing claims 186 m². If the grass is thin from shade, compaction or a wet hollow, pulling moss out will not change the site. That choice is the scarifier for a mossy lawn page. If a hand rake might be enough, settle it on the electric or manual lawn scarifier page before you book the afternoon. A powered scarifier is not a hollow-tine aerator. If grubs are lifting the turf, or brown patches look like disease, ask a contractor.

Prepare the lawn

Mow first, a little shorter than your usual height, with the grass dry. The UKLCA describes mowing in more than one direction so the blades are not all lying the same way. Mark sprinkler heads, shallow cables, paving edges and any stone a metal drum would hit. Keep the extension fully unwound and use an RCD-protected outdoor socket. The listings do not state the plug, so confirm a UK 3-pin before you start. Fit the gentler drum first if the machine has two. That is the spring rake when moss is what you can see, and the blades when the problem is tight thatch. Husqvarna UK keeps tines and flail blades to about 1–2 mm in the soil. Do not drop the lever to −12 mm because that step is printed on several rows. On a Darlac or YTDHYM there is no dial and no box, so plan a smaller area.

Set the depth and make the passes

Set the highest position that still touches the thatch. A positive mark, such as +4 mm or +10 mm, is the above-soil rake position. Start there, or on the shallowest negative step, and test about one metre. You want brown thatch and loose moss, not green leaf and soil. If the pass is peeling the sward, raise the lever before you do the rest. Work in one direction at a steady walk. Add a second direction, across the first, if thatch still hides the soil. The UKLCA expects several passes on a thatchy lawn and treats a bare look afterwards as normal. Stop if the machine is scalping or the box is stuffing full. A 55 L label does not mean you push until the flap bursts.

Clear up, seed, and the ugly week

Empty the box, then rake what it missed. Hyundai, Bluemars, NETTA and PHIWOS reviews all describe debris left on the grass. Seed will not push through a fresh layer of thatch. If you have used a moss killer, the wait before seeding is on that label. Do not follow scarifying with a high-nitrogen summer feed. The RHS warns against that. The lawn will look rough. Bare soil between surviving plants is expected when thatch was solid. Water if the week turns dry, and mow only once seedlings will not pull out. Recovery is weeks, not the same evening. Call a professional when the area is beyond a 10 m lead, or when the lawn may be diseased.

Common questions

What month should I scarify in the UK?
Early autumn, on soil that is moist but not waterlogged, frozen or baked. September suits much of the country, including an earlier start in Scotland and northern England. October is still right if the ground is fit. The RHS also allows October or early November when the job is moss. Do not copy a calendar date if the lawn is still hard from a dry summer.
Do I mow before I scarify?
Yes. Mow a little shorter than usual, on dry grass, ideally in more than one direction. Scarifying long, wet grass clogs the drum and hides the thatch. Mark obstacles before you lower the lever. The mower does not set the scarifier depth.
How deep should the first pass be?
Use the shallowest setting that lifts brown thatch on a one-metre test, around the 1–2 mm into the soil that Husqvarna UK describes for flail blades and spring tines. Do not start at −12 mm because that step is printed on several machines here. A positive mark is an above-soil rake position. If the test pulls green tips and soil, raise the lever.
One direction or two?
Start with one direction. Add a second, across the first, if you still cannot see soil. The UKLCA expects more than one pass on a thatchy lawn and treats a bare look as normal. A second direction is not a reason to drop the lever to the bottom and keep going until the grass is gone.
Should I seed the same day?
You can overseed once the debris is off, if you are not waiting out a moss killer. The product label sets that gap. Do not seed onto leftover thatch, and do not put down a high-nitrogen summer feed afterwards. Keep feet off the seed while it takes.
