Hover mower vs rotary mower

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at two names that sound like a quality grade. Hover mower vs rotary mower is one spinning blade that meets the ground in two ways. On a hover the deck rides a cushion of air. On a wheeled rotary it rides wheels, sometimes with a rear roller. Pick the ground, not the colour of the deck. The twelve corded hovers are the [hover mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/hover-mower). Width and a box, if you stay, are the [hover mower buying guide](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/hover-mower/sub/hover-mower-buying-guide). One blade, two ways to travel

Flymo’s hover-versus-rotary page says both machines cut with a spinning blade. Wheels limit you to lines the axles can follow. A hover can move in the direction you push, including sideways, because there is no wheel track. The Royal Horticultural Society calls a hover a rotary on air, and not self-propelled. A wheeled rotary is what the RHS gives most domestic lawns, including longer grass. A cylinder, a scissor cut, is only the boundary here. Amazon’s labels will not settle it. The BLACK+DECKER title says hover while the rank cell says Rotary Mowers. Read the bullets for an air cushion, or for wheels and a roller. Nothing in the hover set is self-propelled.

Flat, bumps, or a bank

UK sources do not agree. BBC Gardeners’ World says a hover is good value on a smaller lawn that is quite flat. Groby Landscapes says bumps are difficult without wheels. Bosch DIY UK says hovers fit uneven and irregular gardens and are not great in long damp grass. The RHS gives ordinary uneven lawns to a rotary and a few bumps to a hover. If the lawn is small, quite flat, and broken into beds, the hover can turn in a corner in a way wheels cannot. If the lawn is a series of humps, a wheeled rotary is the ordinary domestic answer. If you can cross a small bank on foot, a hover from this set fits. A severe bank is the wrong job for either domestic advert.

Stripes, collection, and long grass

A hover in this set will not stripe the lawn the way a rear roller does. Flymo says the roller bends the grass so the light changes, and that a hover cannot carry that roller because the weight would stop the cushion. None of the twelve listings states a rear roller that stripes. If light and dark stripes are the point, you want a wheeled rotary with a roller, or a cylinder. Boxes here are 15, 20, or 26 litres, or unstated, and several hovers mulch. Flymo says some fines still return. Which? has written that hovers do not leave a very smart finish. Long damp grass is where Bosch says a hover is weaker, and where the RHS sends you to a rotary.

Which to buy for this garden

Choose a hover from this set when the lawn is small and irregular, or when you have a small bank you can cross on foot and you will mow across the face. Choose a wheeled rotary when you want stripes, a wide simple lawn, or grass you often leave long. Choose a cylinder when you want a fine scissor cut on a level lawn you mow little and often. No ASIN here was mown against a named wheeled model. The cheapest saved hover is about £49.99 and the dearest in this set is about £132.00. If you take wheels, read that mower’s own slope line rather than borrowing 20° from an EasiGlide manual.

Common questions

What is the difference between a hover and a rotary?
A hover is a rotary cutter on a cushion of air, so the deck does not ride on wheels. A wheeled rotary uses wheels, and some use a rear roller. Flymo describes both as a spinning blade, with the hover free to move in the direction you push. The Royal Horticultural Society treats the hover as one of the rotary family. A cylinder shears, and it is the fine-lawn choice, not a hover.
Which is better on a bumpy lawn?
It depends which bumps you mean. Bosch points hovers at uneven, irregular gardens. Groby Landscapes says bumps are difficult without wheels, and the RHS allows a hover a few bumps while giving ordinary uneven lawns to a rotary. If the cushion collapses on the tops, you are past a few bumps, and a wheeled rotary is the next format. One review about sticking on uneven ground is a single report, not a verdict on the type.
Can a hover stripe the lawn?
Not in the way a rear roller does. Flymo says the roller bends the grass, and that a hover cannot carry that weight without losing the cushion. None of these listings is a stripe machine. If stripes are the aim, look at a wheeled rotary with a roller, or at a cylinder.
Which is better on a slope?
For a small bank you can cross, Flymo’s incline page puts the hover sideways and says steep hills are where other walk-behind mowers are typically more effective. The manuals forbid up-and-down mowing, and one EasiGlide manual caps the slope at 20°. A wheeled rotary is not given a free pass. Its own manual has a slope limit, and wheels can slide. If you would stand below the machine, stop.
Do I still need a wheeled mower if I buy a hover?
You might, if the hover only does the awkward beds and the small bank, and a large open lawn is the rest. One machine is enough when the whole plot is that small irregular lawn. You need another format if you want stripes, a large grass box, or a machine for grass you leave long. Buying both is reasonable. Expecting roller stripes from a hover is not.
When is a cylinder the right leave?
When the lawn is level, you will mow little and often, and you want a scissor cut. The RHS keeps cylinders for that finish. They are a poor leave when the grass is long, the ground is bumpy, or you wanted to float across a bank. A cylinder with a rear roller can stripe. A hover in this set does not. The hover sits with the awkward small lawn, not with a bowling-green finish.
