Strimmer for lawn edges

Tidying is not the same as cutting a new edge

Two jobs share the word edging. Defining the edge means cutting soil and turf so the bed has a face. Tidying means removing grass that has grown over a face you already have. The RHS tells you to redefine with a half-moon and to aim for a drop of about 7.5 cm. Thrive's tip is about 10 cm. Do not average them. A strimmer does the tidy half once that face exists. Mow and Edge says a vertical head or a guide wheel maintains an edge, and that it does not recut a lost edge as cleanly as a half-moon.

How a strimmer edges

Turn the head so the line is vertical, or set the guide wheel on the hard surface and walk slowly. Mow and Edge puts the wheel on the path or patio, not in the soil. Electrical Safety First names gravel, because a vertical line throws grit along the path. Flymo notes that edging wears line, and Bosch corded reviews here describe line snapping within seconds of an edge cut. Feed only the way the listing states. When the edge is lost rather than untidy, fetch the half-moon.

What this shelf actually offers

A wheel, a twist and the word edging are three different claims. The WORX WG163E names an edger wheel in the box line, and a head past 90 degrees. That is the clearest wheel in the twelve rows. The bare Bosch EasyGrassCut 18V-26 does not name a wheel. It twists the handle, and about £63 is the body only. The corded Bosch names edging as a use and does not name a wheel. A NovorikX review mentions a small wheel, which is not a pack-list line. KraftSense names a guide wheel, with five ratings and a battery cell that says AAA. Which tool suits a socket or a Bosch pack is on the best grass trimmer page.

When a blade kit is a poor edger

A spinning plastic blade is a bad match for a paved edge. Highlandhue reviews say those blades snap on paving, and grass packed under the guard until the head smoked. Jwdj AMX reviews include a small guard and a report of a cut shoe. For a path, use nylon line and, where the listing includes it, a wheel on the hard surface. Width and the carton are on the grass trimmer buying guide. If the edge needs a new face, the half-moon does that cut.

Common questions

Can I edge a lawn with a strimmer?
Yes, if an edge already exists and you only need to remove overhang. Set the head vertical, or use a guide wheel on the hard surface, and walk slowly. You will not recreate a lost bed edge as cleanly as a half-moon. Mow and Edge makes that distinction, and it matches what a nylon tip can physically do.
Do I still need a half-moon edger?
You need one, or a spade, when you are cutting a new line in the turf. The RHS uses a half-moon to redefine and then shears to tidy. A strimmer can take the tidy step when the grass is long. It does not slice a 7.5 cm face. Keep both tools if the beds lose their shape each spring.
Which way should the head face?
The line should be vertical, with a wheel on the path if you have one. Mow and Edge puts that wheel on the hard surface so you follow the existing boundary. A horizontal sweep, used for open grass, scalps the edge or misses the overhang. Turn the head, then walk. Do not lean the whole shaft and hope.
Which trimmers in this set have a wheel?
The WORX WG163E names an edger wheel in the box line. The KraftSense listing names a guide wheel, with the limits of five ratings and no UK review text. A NovorikX review mentions a small wheel, which is not the same as a pack list. The Highlandhue title says roller. Neither Bosch row names a wheel. The cordless Bosch twists the handle instead.
Should I edge before or after mowing?
Mow and Edge says many people mow first, then edge. The RHS trims overhang with shears after each mow, once the edge has been defined. Both sequences are source-specific. Mowing first makes the overhang easier to see. Edging a long fringe before you mow also works if you then cut the lawn to length. Do not treat either order as a by-law.
Why does the line vanish along the path?
The head is next to a hard surface, so the tip wears through. Flymo notes that wear, and Bosch corded reviews in this save describe line snapping within seconds of an edge. Keep the head off the slabs and feed only the way your model states. Pressing harder makes a bald patch, not a sharper edge.
Will a blade kit edge a lawn neatly?
Poorly, once the blade meets paving. Highlandhue reviews describe plastic blades snapping on a wall or a path, and a head that smoked when grass packed underneath. Line, and a wheel when the listing includes one, is the path tool. Leave the disc for soft growth away from the slabs.
