Grass trimmer buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have mown the lawn, and amazon.co.uk titles say lawn mower, 21 V and farmland on sticks that are really hand-held strimmers. A grass trimmer and a strimmer are the same tool in a UK shop: usually a spinning nylon line for the grass the mower misses. This grass trimmer buying guide is the order to decide in before you sort prices. Start with what you are cutting, then the lead or the battery, then width and line, then what the box contains. The twelve listings in our [grass trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/grass-trimmer) were saved on 19 October 2026. Products Compared did not lab-test them. What you are actually cutting

The first split is the plant, not the star rating. A lawn edge, a fringe along a fence, and soft weeds are a line trimmer's job. Woody growth, brambles and saplings are a brush cutter's job: a straight shaft and a gearbox. If that is the plot, move to grass trimmer vs brush cutter before you add a cheap disc to the basket. The KEJSNDXC width cell is 15 cm, and reviews describe a blade strimmer, not a walk-behind mower. Highlandhue reviews say plastic blades snapped on paving.

Corded, cordless, or a bare tool

A corded trimmer means UK mains at 230 V, a BS 1363 plug, an outdoor lead fully unwound, and a 30 mA RCD. The only corded listing here is the Bosch EasyGrassCut 26, at about £29.94, with 280 W, a 26 cm line and a 6 m lead. Reviewers say that lead is too short, and that the line snaps against a hard edge. Cordless means a pack, a charger, and a runtime that stays a claim until you have used it. The WORX WG163E prints 18 V and 20 V MAX as one PowerShare system, at about £79.99, with a 30 cm line. The Bosch EasyGrassCut 18V-26 is about £63 and the title excludes the battery and charger. How to pick those three for a stated job is on the best grass trimmer page.

Width, line and the voltage printed twice

If the mower already does the lawn, the line tools here cluster at 26–30 cm: both Bosch models at 26 cm, the WORX at 30 cm. Several blade tools are about 15 cm, and one Jwdj width cell says 120 mm while a size cell says 120 cm. Do not average those figures. B&Q's 200–300 mm band is that retailer's guide, not a survey of your plot. Use only the line diameter the maker names. A 21 V title whose battery cell says 9 V or 12 V is not an 18 V system, and a Makita word in a title is not a fitted Makita pack.

What the price must include

The shelf price is real only when you know the carton. The corded Bosch names a spool and a 6 m lead. The bare 18 V Bosch names the trimmer and carton packaging. WORX names a charger, a guard, an edger wheel and a spool, while the style cell says two 2.0 Ah packs and the box line names one battery, WA3639. NovorikX bullets say two 20 V packs and the cell says one. Open that clash before you treat the shelf price as a complete kit. Stars come last, and only with the count beside them. A rank of 1 in Grass Trimmers is a sales snapshot, not a score.

Common questions

Is a strimmer the same thing as a grass trimmer?
Yes. In UK shops both names mean the hand-held tool that cuts grass a mower leaves behind, usually with nylon line. Some cheap titles swap in plastic or metal blades and still use both names. A brush cutter is the other class: a shaft and a gearbox for a blade and woody growth. If the title also says lawn mower, check the cutting width before you expect a pedestrian mower.
Should I buy corded or cordless if I have a socket nearby?
Buy corded if the socket is close, the lawn is small, and you will use an outdoor lead with a 30 mA RCD and stay out of the rain. In this save that is the Bosch EasyGrassCut 26, whose box names a 6 m lead that reviewers find short. Buy cordless if the edge runs past one extension reel. You then need a matching pack and charger in the price, unless you already own them.
Why does a £63 Bosch not include a battery?
The EasyGrassCut 18V-26 title says the battery and charger are excluded. About £63 is a body-only price if you already have a Bosch 18 V pack. Reviewers describe packs they own, including a swap with a Bosch hedge trimmer. If you own none, add a genuine Bosch pack and charger before you compare that price with a kit. The listing does not say a 21 V stick will run it.
Can a 21 V pack run on an 18 V Bosch or a Makita charger?
Do not assume it. WORX limits sharing to its own 18 V (20 V MAX) PowerShare packs. Bosch 18 V reviews here talk about Bosch packs, not a 21 V kit from another brand. Several blade listings print 21 V in the title and 9 V or 12 V in the battery cell. The YUTVCZO title mentions Makita and ships its own 21 V packs. The listing never shows a Makita pack fitted.
What has to be in the box before the price is real?
Count the battery, the charger, the guard, the line or blades, and any wheel the title promised. A bare Bosch at about £63 has no pack. A WORX box line names one battery while the style cell says two. A NovorikX title says two packs and the cell says one. Stars do not fill a missing charger.
