Manual vs cordless grass shears for a small garden

Updated: October 2026

You have a short edge and a soft shrub, and two prices that look similar: a squeeze shear at about £15, or a 3.6 V cordless tool at about £19.99. Manual vs cordless grass shears is that choice, not a choice between shears and a strimmer, and not a choice between shears and a hedge trimmer. The class split is already on the [grass shears buying guide](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/grass-shears/sub/grass-shears-buying-guide). The ten listings are on the [grass shears comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/grass-shears). Peter F. compared the saved amazon.co.uk prices, gaps, and review notes on 22 October 2026. Choose manual when the job is grass

If you only edge grass, and you want a tool you can stop by opening your hand, stay with a manual shear. In this set that is four listings from about £14.99 to about £19.99. None of them needs a charger, and none of them is quiet because of a marketing line. They are quiet because they have no motor. The restriction is the cut. Soft grass and leaves are the job. Wilkinson reviews say woody stems need several squeezes. Byhagern tells you not to try branches. A second blade is the only reason to cross to cordless. Who should skip each manual row is on best grass shears.

What 3.6 V and 8 V are for

A 3.6 V or 8 V shear in this set is for the same short grass, plus soft leafy growth on a second blade. LIGO is the price twin of the manual shears, at about £19.99, and it is the weakest star line: 3.9 from 52 reviews. Reviews include owners who could not cut small twigs, and owners who used it on lavender and light shrubs. The blade-material cell says Plastic, which the bullets do not confirm. SnapFresh at about £25.99 prints 0.31 inch thickness and an 8 mm width cell. Reviews stall it on thicker hawthorn. Bluemars at about £29.99 prints no millimetre gap. One review says the switch sits close to the blades and cut a finger. You still bend, which those reviews say in so many words.

What 12 V to 21 V still will not do

A higher voltage still will not cut a branch the listing has already limited. WORKPRO states 7.7 mm on the hedge function. Reviews say thicker branches needed hacking. The bullet says 750 g and the item-weight cell says 1.83 kg. Flouritech states 6 mm. Reviews say thicker wood is beyond it. The bullet’s 72–82 dB is not labelled as a guaranteed sound-power level. DCA is 20 V on 4.5 from 28 reviews. One review wrote 20 Ah. The listing says 2.0 Ah. There is no millimetre gap, and reviews say thick stems jam the blade and the power cuts.

Noise, the plug, and your back

Manual shears are outside the outdoor-noise list. Reciprocating hedge trimmers are on it as marking-only equipment, not under the sound-power cap that applies to lawnmowers and lawn trimmers. A powered shear may need that mark. Flouritech’s decibel range does not prove the mark was met. Every charger in these files is unchecked against a BS 1363 plug. Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 expect a UK plug, or a compliant conversion, on equipment supplied for a UK socket. If the brick arrives with the wrong pins, you are not trimming that day. If you only edge grass and want silence, buy a manual shear. If you also trim soft shrubs and accept a stall at about 6 mm to 8 mm where a gap is printed, use a cordless listing that states the gap. How you lock and unjam that blade is on how to use grass shears.

Common questions

Are cordless shears easier on the hands?
They remove the squeeze, which matters if your hand tires on a Wilkinson-style shear. They do not remove the stoop, and they add vibration and a switch you must keep clear of the blades. Bluemars has a finger-cut review about switch position. A manual shear stops when you open your hand. A cordless blade stops when the lock and the trigger say so.
Is 3.6 V enough for lawn edges?
It can be enough for a short grass fringe and very soft growth, which is how some LIGO reviewers used it on lavender. It is a weak bet in this set: about £19.99, 3.9 from 52 reviews, and stalls on small twigs. The manual shears at the same money have far larger samples and no charger.
Will 20 V cut branches?
Not past the limit the listing actually prints, and the DCA prints none. Reviews of that about £59.99 tool say thicker woody stems jam the blade and the power cuts. WORKPRO prints 7.7 mm and Flouritech prints 6 mm. Both have reviews that stop at thicker wood.
Which is quieter?
The manual shear. It has no motor. A cordless shear is a powered tool at your hand, and reciprocating hedge trimmers fall under noise-marking rules rather than a mower-style sound-power cap. Do not read Flouritech’s 72–82 dB bullet as a guaranteed sound-power level.
What is in the box?
Manual rows are the shear. Wilkinson does not list a sheath. Cordless boxes vary. LIGO lists a trimmer, two blades, a charger, and a manual, without amp-hours. WORKPRO and DCA describe a 2.0 Ah pack and a charger. SnapFresh describes a built-in 1500 mAh battery and does not name a separate charger. Flouritech claims two packs. A review says the DCA had no case.
Do I still have to bend?
Yes. LIGO, Bluemars, and DCA reviews all describe bending to the grass. A cordless hand shear is not a long-handled edging shear, and none of these ten listings is the standing tool. If your back is the reason you are shopping, change class. A motor does not add a shaft.
