Grass shears for lawn edges, not the whole lawn

Updated: October 2026

The mower has left a fringe along the border, the path, or a grave, and you are about to do the whole lawn from a stoop with a hand shear. Grass shears for lawn edges are the right tool only for the short fringe you can reach by bending. They do not cut a new soil line, and they do not replace long-handled edging shears, which are not sold in this comparison. The ten listings are on the [grass shears comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/grass-shears). Peter F. matched them to that edge job on 22 October 2026 from amazon.co.uk listings, RHS guidance, and review notes. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The edge and the line are different jobs

A fringe of grass is a shearing job. A wavy boundary, where the soil has crept onto the path, is a half-moon job. The Royal Horticultural Society describes a half-moon to redefine that line, with a drop of about 7.5 cm, and then edging shears after each mow. That 7.5 cm figure is theirs. It is not a measurement of any listing here. A grass shear has no blade that slices soil. Once the line is already there, you are only trimming. The upright method on that RHS page, lower handle steady and upper handle moving, is for long-handled edging shears. It is not the way you hold a one-hand Wilkinson. How the lock and the short stroke actually work is on how to use grass shears.

A short edge you can reach

A path corner, a grave, or a metre or two beside a border is the job these one-hand listings are reviewed for. Wilkinson reviews mention edges. GRÜNTEK reviews use the same sort of edge. The unlock can be stiff, so set it before you kneel. Gardena Classic 8730-30 is a poor vertical-and-horizontal pick because it does not rotate. It is still the lowest price if your edge is one direction and you will accept reviews that describe a chewed cut. Byhagern has no stated swivel, and a review says it does not turn 90°. Skip it for a path that needs the blade flat. Who should skip the rotating pair for other reasons is on best grass shears.

A long edge, and your back

A whole lawn, or a long straight run beside a drive, wants long-handled edging shears from another category. Which? has reviewed that standing class, and those scores are not these listings. Cordless hand shears do not remove the stoop. LIGO and Bluemars reviews say you bend. DCA reviews say the grass blade needs a lot of bending, even though the pack is 20 V. If your back is the limit, leave this category. The grass shears buying guide is where the standing class is separated from the stoop class.

Beside plants and wildlife

A closable shear shows up in reviews beside soft plants because you can stop mid-stroke. A strimmer’s line keeps going, and it is the wrong tool when you need to stop beside a soft plant, a label, or a flower you meant to keep. It is still a blade. Damaging a nest that is in use or being built is an offence in a private garden as well as on a farm. The 1 March to 31 August hedgerow ban is for agricultural land, including allotments. It is not a ban on trimming your own lawn edge. If the fringe runs through irises, herbs, or a grave planting, a manual shear you can open your hand around is the more controllable of the two classes in this set. If the growth is woody, or higher than you can reach without standing on something, stop. The stated cordless gaps are about 6 mm to 7.7 mm where they are printed.

Common questions

Can hand shears edge a whole lawn?
They can trim a short fringe you can reach by bending. They are a poor way to do a whole lawn. You will be stooped for the length of the run, and the one-hand tools here weigh about 222 g to 440 g with no shaft to lean on. A long edge wants long-handled edging shears, which are a different product.
What tool redefines a wavy soil edge?
A half-moon, not a grass shear. The Royal Horticultural Society describes cutting the line with a drop of about 7.5 cm, then keeping the grass tidy with shears. The 7.5 cm is their figure, not a spec on these ASINs. Shears in this set cut grass. They do not slice a new boundary into the soil.
How often should edges be trimmed?
The RHS line for a maintained edge is after each mow in the growing season, which is often read as about weekly. That is guidance, not a schedule we measured on these shears. If you skip several mows, you are facing a fringe that may need the half-moon again before the shear looks useful.
Which listing rotates for a vertical edge?
Wilkinson Sword 1111220W states 180°, and reviews describe a twist until it clicks. GRÜNTEK states 360° and 16 locks, with a stiff unlock in reviews. Gardena Classic 8730-30 does not rotate. Byhagern has no stated swivel, and a review says it will not turn 90° for a horizontal cut.
Do cordless shears save my back?
No. Reviews of LIGO, Bluemars, and the DCA grass blade say you still bend. The motor removes the squeeze, not the stoop. A 20 V pack at about £59.99 does not add a long handle. If the edge is long enough to hurt, look at long-handled edging shears outside this comparison.
Are shears better than a strimmer next to plants?
They are the more controllable tool when you must stop beside a soft plant, because a manual shear stops as you open your hand. A strimmer is a poor fit in that spot and a fair one on an open edge away from anything you might scar. A shear is still a blade.
