Gardena or Bosch grass trimmer: which battery fits?

Updated: October 2026

Choosing a Gardena or Bosch grass trimmer can be simple if you read the battery label before the tool logo. Gardena’s current 18 V P4A trimmers and green Bosch DIY tools participate in POWER FOR ALL, but blue Bosch Professional batteries use a different rail and do not fit. A shared battery system also does not mean the cutting heads are the same. If you own a compatible PBA pack, compare body-only Gardena options on our [Gardena grass trimmer page](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/gardena-grass-trimmer); if you own Professional packs, stay within that system rather than forcing compatibility.

The battery that is actually shared

POWER FOR ALL is an 18 V battery alliance covering selected DIY and garden tools from Bosch and partner brands including Gardena. A compatible PBA battery can move between participating products. That can make a SmallCut or ComfortCut body attractive if you already run green Bosch DIY equipment. The identifier is the system, not 18 V by itself. Look for POWER FOR ALL and the PBA designation, then check the documentation for exceptions. The alliance says previous Bosch DIY 18 V packs can work with partner tools, subject to limits. SmallCut and ComfortCut in this comparison exclude the battery and charger. EasyTrim and PowerTrim include one PBA 18V/36 battery and an AL 1810 CV charger. Our Gardena buying guide explains solo versus kit. An older Gardena BLi-18 pack is not automatically part of this alliance.

Bosch Professional is a different rail

Bosch operates two separate 18 V families. Green Bosch DIY POWER FOR ALL packs are the partners for these Gardena P4A tools. Blue Bosch Professional packs, including GBA and ProCORE, are mechanically coded differently. Gardena UK support says its PBA 18V/45 and PBA 18V/72 batteries are not compatible with Bosch Professional batteries. A ComfortCut reviewer bought the body because a POWER FOR ALL pack fitted, while another reported that a Bosch Professional 18 V pack did not. Both can be true. Do not bridge the rails with an unapproved adapter. The alliance says it does not offer an adapter for old partner batteries. The same rule excludes a 36 V pack. A 36 V Bosch battery is not an 18 V POWER FOR ALL PBA pack. If your collection is blue Professional or 36 V, compare tools made for that collection.

The cutting head is not shared

A shared battery does not choose the cut. SmallCut and ComfortCut use replaceable RotorCut plastic blades, five with each saved body. They suit a light, already-mown edge, and owner feedback reports fast wear when the blade touches concrete or edging stone. Bosch's EasyGrassCut 18V-230, in a UK round-up, is a line tool. That round-up describes a 1.6 mm line, while Gardena's PowerTrim listing here specifies 2 mm. PowerTrim also names PowerBoost. EasyTrim is described as a line tool in reviews, though Amazon does not state a diameter. ComfortCut adds telescopic and edging wording to its RotorCut head. Read Gardena RotorCut or nylon line before an existing battery makes the whole decision. A soft bed and a green PBA pack point to a body-only ComfortCut. A paving edge points toward a line tool.

When to buy which

Choose a Gardena body when you have confirmed a compatible POWER FOR ALL PBA pack and prefer that head. ComfortCut is the more adjustable RotorCut body. SmallCut is the lower-priced and lighter listed option. Their rating lines are similar, so the shaft and the edge decide more than the brand. Choose a Bosch DIY trimmer when its line, dimensions or controls fit the job better. Do not assume it is better because the battery started with Bosch. If you own only Bosch Professional packs, these Gardena bare bodies are not ready to use on them. Buy within Professional, or budget for a complete POWER FOR ALL kit and keep the systems separate. The best Gardena grass trimmer choices include two kits, and those batteries still will not join a Professional collection. Check the style selector at checkout, because solo and kit articles can share a model name.

Common questions

Do Gardena and Bosch share batteries?
Selected Gardena and green Bosch DIY tools share compatible 18 V PBA batteries through POWER FOR ALL. Check both article and battery markings because participation and exceptions matter. The statement does not include every Bosch battery, older Gardena BLi-18 products or tools at a different voltage.
Will a blue Bosch Professional pack fit?
No. Bosch Professional 18 V uses a different, mechanically coded rail from POWER FOR ALL. Gardena UK support confirms that Professional packs are not compatible with its PBA system. Do not force the pack or use an unapproved adapter to bridge the two families.
I own a green Bosch pack. Should I buy a Gardena body?
It can be economical if the pack is confirmed as POWER FOR ALL/PBA and the Gardena cutting head suits your boundary. ComfortCut and SmallCut are sold without batteries in this comparison. Check compatibility first, then compare blade wear, shaft adjustment and the total price rather than buying on colour alone.
Is the cutting head the same across the two brands?
No. A shared battery supplies power; it does not standardise the head. SmallCut and ComfortCut use Gardena RotorCut blades, while Bosch EasyGrassCut examples use nylon line. Even two line tools can differ in diameter, feed and width, so consumables should be matched to the exact article.
Can I use an adapter?
The POWER FOR ALL alliance does not offer an adapter for old partner batteries, and an unofficial adapter may bypass intended mechanical or electronic protections. We would not recommend one. Use a battery approved for the tool or choose a tool already compatible with the battery system you own.
Does a 36 V Bosch pack fit an 18 V Gardena trimmer?
No. A 36 V pack is not an 18 V POWER FOR ALL PBA battery. Matching brand names do not make different voltages or rails compatible. Use only the voltage and battery family specified for the Gardena article.
