Gardena grass trimmer buying guide

Updated: October 2026

Four turquoise cordless trimmers can look much the same when you are standing at the shed door, yet the wrong choice may leave you without a battery or replacing plastic blades against every paving stone. This Gardena grass trimmer buying guide starts with the decisions that matter: RotorCut blades or nylon line, a body-only tool or a complete kit, and a fixed or telescopic shaft. You can then compare the saved UK prices in our [Gardena grass trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/gardena-grass-trimmer). Choose the head and what comes in the box before using stars as a tie-breaker.

What you are actually choosing

All four products in this comparison are cordless 18 V shaft trimmers for grass left beside beds, fences and lawn edges. SmallCut 23/18V and ComfortCut 23/18V use Gardena's replaceable RotorCut plastic blades. PowerTrim 30/18V uses a 2 mm nylon line. EasyTrim 25/18V is described as a line tool in reviews, although its saved Amazon listing does not state the line diameter. A soft border after mowing asks less of a blade than coarse grass beside brick and concrete. For the cutting-head decision, read Gardena RotorCut or nylon line.

RotorCut, or a line

RotorCut replaces a spool with small plastic blades that click onto the head. SmallCut and ComfortCut each include five blades, and there is no line to wind. UK feedback on SmallCut describes using roughly one blade during a cut beside concrete, and ComfortCut reviews report blades shortening on edging stones. A bed, timber or a deliberate gap gives a blade an easier life than a strip tight against brick paving. PowerTrim's bullets specify a 2 mm nylon line, which is the clearer option here for thicker grass. EasyTrim reviews describe line, but Amazon does not give its diameter or feed type. Do not buy RotorCut spares for a line head because both tools carry the same brand.

Solo or ready to use

SmallCut at about £46.95 and ComfortCut at about £63.95 are saved as without battery. They include the trimmer and five blades, but no battery or charger. They are sensible body-only purchases if you already own a compatible POWER FOR ALL 18 V PBA battery and charger. EasyTrim at about £147.99 and PowerTrim at about £143.64 each include one PBA 18V/36 battery and an AL 1810 CV charger. That gap is the kit, not a better head. The articles saved here are SmallCut 14702-55, ComfortCut 14701-55, EasyTrim kit 14704-20 and PowerTrim kit 14703-20. A manufacturer page for a solo article may not describe the Amazon kit. If battery compatibility is the deciding issue, see Gardena or Bosch grass trimmer.

Shaft, width and figures that disagree

ComfortCut's bullets name a telescopic shaft and an edging function, although they say 2.1 kg while the item-weight field says 3.1 kg. SmallCut is consistently listed at 1.6 kg, but the listing does not call its shaft telescopic and a reviewer describes working bent over. EasyTrim's title says telescopic, and its bullets name a button for switching to edging plus a guide wheel. Its weight is 2.1 kg in the bullets and 2.74 kg in the item field. Treat the disputed weights as listing uncertainty. SmallCut and ComfortCut each print 230 mm, while EasyTrim prints 25.8 cm. PowerTrim's Amazon cutting-width cell says 2 mm, the same measurement its bullets use for line thickness. Gardena gives 30 cm for a different solo article, which does not rewrite this kit's cell. Confirm article 14703-20 if that width affects your choice, then read our conditional picks.

Common questions

Is a Gardena trimmer sold without the battery?
Yes. The SmallCut 23/18V and ComfortCut 23/18V styles saved in this comparison are body-only products. They include five RotorCut blades but no battery or charger. Confirm that you own a compatible POWER FOR ALL 18 V PBA pack before treating the displayed price as your total cost.
What is the difference between SmallCut and ComfortCut?
Both use a 230 mm RotorCut head and run at a listed 9,000 rpm. SmallCut is the lower-priced, 1.6 kg body, but its shaft is not described as telescopic. ComfortCut costs more and its bullets name a telescopic shaft and edging function, although its listed weights conflict.
When is the EasyTrim set worth considering?
EasyTrim suits a first-time POWER FOR ALL buyer who wants a battery, charger, telescopic wording and a button-and-wheel edging arrangement in one box. It is less compelling if you already own compatible packs, because its about £147.99 saved price includes another PBA 18V/36 battery and charger.
Why does the PowerTrim width say 2 mm?
The Amazon cutting-width cell for this kit says 2 mm, while the bullets use 2 mm for the nylon line. Gardena publishes 30 cm for solo article 14703-55, but this Amazon kit is article 14703-20. We therefore leave the saved cell unresolved rather than transferring a figure from another article.
Will my existing 18 V battery fit?
Look for POWER FOR ALL and a PBA designation, not voltage alone. Compatible green Bosch DIY batteries may fit within the alliance, subject to the maker’s exceptions. Blue Bosch Professional packs and older Gardena BLi-18 packs are different systems and should not be forced or used through an unapproved adapter.
Do I need a telescopic shaft?
A telescopic shaft is useful when more than one person uses the tool or when a fixed shaft leaves you stooping. ComfortCut’s bullets explicitly name one, and EasyTrim’s title does too. SmallCut may still suit a shorter user or brief jobs, but its light 1.6 kg figure does not guarantee a comfortable reach.
