Dremel corded or cordless

Updated: October 2026

You have a socket at the bench, and the basket is split between an about £44 cable and an about £119.95 battery. Dremel corded or cordless is that split. Buy the cable when the work stays next to the socket and you want the long review line. Buy the 8240 when you will leave the socket and you will pay for a 12 V pack in the box. Do not treat the Lite, the 8150 or a pen as that 8240. Prices on our [Dremel multi tool comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/dremel-multi-tool) are from 22 October 2026. The decision in one pass

A corded rotary tool wins for a bench session of more than a few minutes. In this set that is the 3000 at about £44.00 if you want 130 W and 7,074 reviews, or a 4250 if you want 175 W. The cordless choice that replaces the cable for heavier craft is the 8240 at about £119.95, with a 12 V 2 Ah pack and a charger in the box and 77 reviews. The Lite is 3.6 V. The 8150 is 7.2 V. The pens say they are not for heavy work. Only the 8240 bullet names the Bosch 12 V system. If you have not chosen the job yet, use the Dremel multi tool buying guide.

What the cable buys

The 3000, B0078LENZC, is 230 V, 130 W, 10,000–33,000 rpm, at 4.6 from 7,074 reviews. The speed floor is 10,000 rpm, so very slow polishing is outside its dial. If about £44 and a cable fit the bench, open this listing first. The soft-case 4250 is about £80.00 and 175 W, with a field of 5,000–35,000 rpm and 4.5 from 376 reviews. A highlight also says 10,000 rpm, and the corded file still has a lithium-ion line with no battery in the box. You are paying for the motor, not for cordless running.

Three different cordless tools

The Lite is about £53.60, 3.6 V, with a highlight of 8,000–25,000 rpm and a maximum cell that says 25 rpm. Dremel's GB page for F0137760JB agrees with the highlight. Reviews call it lighter than a full-size tool and underpowered for some jobs. It is not a cordless 3000. The 8150 is about £67.15, brushless, 7.2 V, 5,000–30,000 rpm, with an LED and 4.6 from 259 reviews. One review says it will not run while charging, and another describes the battery as not replaceable. The 8240 at about £119.95 is the 12 V kit, with a 2 Ah pack in the box and no watt cell on the amazon listing.

Packs, chargers and the pens

Only the 8240 bullet names the Bosch 12 V system, and that kit still includes its own 2 Ah pack and charger. The Lite and the 8150 will not take that slide pack. On one review the 8150 will not run while it charges. Pens are not a third equal answer. The black AOZOY at about £15.47 runs to 18,000 rpm and the blue one at about £26.98 runs to 15,000 rpm. Both say they are not for heavy projects, and both show 4.3 from 1,565 because the review text is shared.

Common questions

Should I buy a corded or a cordless Dremel?
Buy corded if the work stays at a socket. In this set that is the 3000 at about £44.00, 130 W, 4.6 from 7,074 reviews, or a 175 W 4250 at about £80.00 or about £114.47. Buy the cordless 8240 at about £119.95 if you will leave the socket and you accept 77 reviews and a 12 V pack in the box. The Lite and the 8150 are a lighter decision.
Is the 8240 as strong as the 4250?
Dremel's GB page says the 8240 keeps the power of the corded 4250. The amazon listing for B0CJY288ZJ does not print a watt cell, so you cannot confirm 175 W from the page you are ordering. What you can confirm is 12 V, a 2 Ah pack and charger, 5,000–35,000 rpm, and 4.6 from 77 reviews at about £119.95. Treat same power as the maker's claim.
Is the Lite a cordless 3000?
No. The Lite is 3.6 V, about £53.60, with a highlight of 8,000–25,000 rpm and a maximum cell that wrongly says 25 rpm. The 3000 is 130 W, corded, 10,000–33,000 rpm, at about £44.00. Reviews call the Lite lighter and, for some jobs, underpowered. Do not expect it to hold a long cut the way the mains tool does.
Can I use a Bosch 12 V battery?
Only the 8240 listing says it is compatible with the Bosch 12 V system. The kit includes a 12 V 2 Ah pack and a charger of its own. The 8150 is 7.2 V with an integrated battery. The Lite is 3.6 V with USB charging. A Bosch slide pack does not belong on those two.
Does the 8150 battery come out when it dies?
A review describes the 8150 battery as not replaceable, and the listing shows an integrated 7.2 V pack with a USB-C cable rather than a Bosch-style slide pack. When that pack is tired you charge the tool, you do not pocket a second battery from the 8240 kit.
Will it run while it is plugged in to charge?
The 8150, on one UK review, does not turn on while it is charging. Do not plan to work from the USB-C lead. The 8240 is a different tool: it has a removable 12 V pack and a separate charger. None of these pages promises you can keep cutting without a break.
