Dremel multi tool buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a hedge-trimmer blade to touch up, or a small hole to open, and the search has offered a Dremel multi tool. On amazon.co.uk that name means a high-speed rotary tool, not an oscillating multi-tool, and the twelve listings in our [Dremel multi tool comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/dremel-multi-tool) are not interchangeable. This Dremel multi tool buying guide puts the questions in order: the job, then cable or battery, then whether the speed cells agree, then the shank. Prices are the amazon.co.uk shelf prices from 22 October 2026. Products Compared did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Rotary, not oscillating

A rotary tool spins a bit, a disc or a stone. An oscillating multi-tool moves a blade from side to side. Search multi tool without rotary and the catalogues mix, so a plunge blade gets compared with a 3.2 mm collet. A 3.6 V pen and a 175 W corded tool are not substitutes. Touching up shears is light rotary work, not a reason to buy an oscillating tool. If you already want one named pick, use the best Dremel rotary tool page.

Job, then cable, then watts

Name the job before the accessory count. Bench cutting that lasts more than a few minutes points at a corded 130 W or 175 W tool. Models and light engraving point at the Lite, the 8150 or a pen. The 3000 is 130 W at 230 V and starts at 10,000 rpm. If you will leave the socket, the 8240 includes a 12 V 2 Ah pack and a charger, and only that bullet names Bosch 12 V compatibility. Both 4250 listings are 175 W and the field starts at 5,000 rpm. The 8240 listing has no watt cell, so do not treat the maker's same-power claim as a printed 175 W.

When the listing disagrees with itself

The Lite highlight says 8,000–25,000 rpm, and Dremel's GB page for F0137760JB says the same band. The maximum-speed cell says 25 rpm. Use the highlight. The about £80.00 4250 has a field of 5,000–35,000 rpm and a highlight that also says 10,000–35,000 rpm. The about £114.47 listing puts a hard case and a flex shaft in the title, with 35 accessories in the style line and 45 in components. The two AOZOY pens share 4.3 from 1,565. Adding the counts invents a larger sample. The DEKOPRO 170 W components cell names a lay-flat hose kit, which is not a rotary tool.

Bits and the plug you have not seen

Dremel's UK collet sizes are 0.8, 1.6, 2.4 and 3.2 mm, and most accessories are 3.2 mm. Many kits ship only the 3.2 mm collet. Forcing a larger shank into a smaller one is how bits slip. A DEWINNER compatibility bullet is a claim, not a fit we measured. A GALAX review says the supplied bits did not fit the supplied collets. No file in this set states a BS 1363 plug. The 3000 and the 4250s say 230 V. The DEKOPRO 170 W cell says 220 V. Check the live amazon.co.uk pictures before you assume a UK plug.

Common questions

Is a Dremel the same thing as an oscillating multi-tool?
No. In this comparison a Dremel multi tool spins a bit, disc or stone for small cutting, grinding, sanding and engraving. An oscillating multi-tool moves a blade from side to side and is a different purchase. A rotary stone can touch up shears. That does not make a 3.6 V pen a substitute for a 175 W corded tool.
Is the 130 W 3000 enough, or do I need the 175 W 4250?
For bench work and a long review line, the 3000 at about £44.00 is 130 W, 10,000–33,000 rpm, and 4.6 from 7,074 reviews. The soft-case 4250 at about £80.00 adds 175 W, electronic feedback and a field that starts at 5,000 rpm, with 4.5 from 376. Choose the 4250 when you want that motor and can accept a loud tool.
Does the 8240 take a Bosch 12 V pack?
The bullet for B0CJY288ZJ says the 8240 is compatible with the Bosch 12 V system, and the kit includes a 12 V 2 Ah pack and a charger at about £119.95. That sentence is not on the Lite or the 8150. The Lite is 3.6 V with USB charging. The 8150 is 7.2 V with an integrated battery. A review says that pack is not replaceable, and another says the tool will not run while charging.
Why does one listing say 25 rpm?
The Lite maximum-speed cell says 25 rpm. The highlight says 8,000–25,000 rpm, and Dremel's GB page for F0137760JB says the same. Use the highlight and keep the 25 rpm cell visible as a conflict. The rest of the row still stands: about £53.60 and 4.6 from 1,452 reviews.
Are 233 accessories better than 15?
Not by themselves. The DEWINNER kit at about £29.99 claims 233 pieces, with 4.3 from 835 reviews, and reviewers say wire wheels and drums collapse. The 3000 lists 15 accessories, and reviewers say that count shrinks once mandrels are counted separately, yet they still prefer those bits to untrusted cheap sets. Match the shank to the collet.
What if the tool fails in the first month?
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects satisfactory quality, and the short-term right to reject runs for 30 days when goods miss that standard. Keep the amazon.co.uk order record. A single review that mentions a failure is not a failure rate for the model. It is a reason to inspect the tool on arrival and to return a unit that will not run.
