Cylinder mower vs rotary mower

Updated: October 2026

You searched for a cylinder and you may still need a rotary. Cylinder mower vs rotary mower comes down to one condition. Choose a cylinder when you will mow a level lawn little and often and you want a fine cut. Choose a rotary when the grass gets long, the ground is bumpy, or you miss a fortnight. That is the Royal Horticultural Society’s split, not a trial of the listings on the [cylinder mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cylinder-mower). Peter F. read the amazon.co.uk listings on 22 October 2026. This was not a mow with these machines. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two cuts, not two brands

A cylinder, sometimes called a reel, spins several blades against a fixed bottom blade. The cut is a scissor cut. The RHS reserves it for a very fine ornamental lawn and for sports turf on a strict schedule. A rotary uses one blade spinning horizontally. It strikes the grass. The RHS says a sharp rotary, or a hover, suits most domestic gardens. The cylinder side of this comparison is the Gardena hand reels, the Ark Mat, the Yard Force and Wild Edge kits, and the Einhell solo body. Those are examples of the cutting system, not a ranking. Wickes’s line that cylinders are only push or petrol is incomplete here, because three of these listings are cordless cylinders.

When the cylinder is the wrong machine this week

The test is the week you were away. Lawnsmith says a cylinder will not cut long grass, and that you should mow at least weekly in the growing season if a reel is your only mower. After a holiday they suggest borrowing a rotary for the high cuts, then lowering the reel over later passes. The Fiskars bullets say grass up to 10 cm. That is a listing limit, not a licence to attack a rough patch. Einhell UK reviews include tufts when the cut is not kept short. A reel follows the surface and can scalp a high spot. Wet, matted grass belongs with the rotary. If you mow every two or three weeks through May and June, buy the rotary.

Stripes are a roller, not a cylinder monopoly

A light and dark band is bent grass and reflected light. The RHS says you need a rear roller, and that a wheeled rotary without one will not stripe well. A cylinder without a named roller is in the same position. In this set the roller is named on the Ark Mat title and in the Yard Force bullets. The Fiskars names four wheels. The Gardena files do not name a roller. A rotary with a roller can stripe. A cylinder with only wheels should not be sold to you as a stripe machine. The walk and the height sit on how to stripe a lawn with a cylinder mower. You can have a fine cylinder cut and no stripes, and stripes from a roller rotary whose blade is an impact cut.

Stay or leave

Stay if your lawn is level, you will mow it often enough to keep within about a third of the height, and you want the scissor finish. Then use the cylinder mower buying guide for hand, kit, or solo. The Ark Mat, the Gardena hand reels, the two 20 V kits, and the Einhell solo are examples, not a ranking on this page. Leave if the lawn is bumpy, if you travel, or if long grass is normal. This page will not name a rotary ASIN. Bosch rotary models were removed as misfits. A professional Allett cylinder is also outside these listings. One mower is enough when it matches the week you actually mow.

Common questions

Which is better, a cylinder or a rotary?
A cylinder is the better fit when you mow a level lawn little and often and you want a scissor cut. A rotary is the better fit when the grass gets long, the ground is bumpy, or you miss weeks. The RHS gives most domestic gardens to the rotary or the hover.
Can a cylinder mower cut long grass after a holiday?
Poorly, if at all. Lawnsmith says a cylinder struggles with holiday-length grass and suggests borrowing a rotary for the high cuts, then lowering the reel over later passes. The Fiskars listing stops at 10 cm of grass. That is not a rough-grass claim.
Will a cylinder scalp a bumpy lawn?
It can. The reel follows the ground, so a hump gets shaved and a hollow gets missed. Wickes treats a flat lawn as part of the cylinder bargain. A rotary is the more forgiving only mower on uneven ground as well.
Can a rotary stripe?
Yes, if it has a rear roller. The RHS says a wheeled rotary without a roller will not stripe well. The band is bent grass, not a property of the scissor cut. A cylinder that does not name a roller is in the same position.
Do I need both?
Only if you want a weekly scissor cut and you also face holiday-length grass or a rough corner. Many gardens need one rotary and nothing else. Keeping both means storing both and maintaining two blades or a reel. It is reasonable. It is not the default.
Are the cordless mowers in this set rotaries?
The Yard Force, the Wild Edge and the Einhell are cylinder listings. The Ark Mat’s style name says Rotary, so that one fit is uncertain. Gardena titles that say cordless in this set are hand-powered. A removed Bosch rotary is not reviewed here.
Is a cylinder quieter because it is safer?
A manual cylinder has no motor, so there is no engine note to compare. That is not a decibel test, and it is not a safety certificate. Powered cylinders in this set do not print a sound-power figure either. There is no national Sunday ban to hide behind.
