How to use a cylinder mower

Updated: October 2026

The mower is on the path and the useful question is whether today is a cylinder day at all. How to use a cylinder mower starts with the stop conditions, then the height, then a straight pass, and it ends when the reel or the blades are no longer a job for you. This page does not rank the listings. Prices and clashes sit on the [cylinder mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cylinder-mower). Peter F. used the Royal Horticultural Society and the listings from 22 October 2026. This was not a test mow. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When not to start

Do not start if the soil is wet, frosted, or scattered with stones, toys, or sticks. The RHS tells you to mow dry grass, stay off a frozen lawn, and clear debris first. Long grass can hide a hedgehog. Wet clippings smear a reel. Stop if you would take more than about a third of the height in one pass. An older Gardena manual, articles 04020-20 and 04023-20, says not to start that cylinder on grass taller than about 12 cm. The Fiskars bullets stop at 10 cm. If the grass is past that, use a rotary for the high cuts, then bring the reel back. If the ground is bumpy as well, cylinder mower vs rotary mower is the exit.

Set the height before you push

After a break, including the first cut of the year, the RHS says to use the highest setting and take about a third, then lower the cut over later mows. Ordinary summer lawns sit at about 13–25 mm. Fine lawns sit at about 6–13 mm, which several listings here cannot reach. In dry weather, raise the cut rather than shave a stressed lawn. Gardena Comfort and Plus bullets say the blades are pre-set and must not touch. The Comfort 330’s UK page gives a 40 micrometre factory gap, so do not wind that reel until the blades kiss. Do not copy a groundsman’s paper test onto a preset Gardena. The Einhell heights agree with themselves: 14, 23, 32 and 38 mm. The Yard Force bullets say 14–43 mm while the specification lines say 14–43 cm. Set from the millimetre bullets.

The pass

Cut the edges first, then straight lines with a slight overlap, which is the RHS outline. On a manual reel, BBC Gardeners’ World says to walk briskly, because a faster walk spins the cylinder faster. Empty the box before it dumps a wet mat. If the style name says there is no catcher, the clippings stay on the lawn or you rake them. UK reviews of the Classic 330 say the reel does not finish the grass against a fence, so plan shears or a trimmer for that edge. On a slope, an older Gardena manual says to cut diagonally and not to pull the mower carelessly downhill. Stripes are a roller problem. Direction and height sit on how to stripe a lawn with a cylinder mower.

Hands, power, and when to stop

Wear shoes, keep your hands out of the cylinder, and never clear a blockage with the reel free to turn. The RHS expects a dead-man’s control on a powered machine. The Wild Edge bullets mention a double-action start and a motor brake. If the reel keeps spinning after you let go, or you smell burning, stop and unplug the pack. Do not open a swollen or hot lithium battery. The Einhell bullets say you can push the GE-HM 18/38 with no battery fitted. That permission is for this listing, not for every cordless reel. Sharpening a cylinder is a professional job. Stop if the bottom blade is nicked, if a preset Gardena has been tightened until it rubs, or if you are injured.

Common questions

How do I use a cylinder mower for the first cut of the year?
Wait for dry, unfrozen ground, clear debris, and set the highest height. Take about a third of the leaf, then lower the cut over later mows. If the grass is already far past a third, use a rotary for the first reduction and bring the cylinder back when the sward is short enough.
Should the grass be dry?
Yes. The RHS tells you to mow dry grass and to stay off frost. Wet clippings clog a reel and a box, and they smear the cut. If the lawn is only damp after a light shower, wait until it no longer clumps on your shoes.
How fast do I walk with a manual reel?
Briskly and steadily, in a straight line. BBC Gardeners’ World notes that a faster walk spins a push reel faster, which is what makes the scissor cut work. Too slow and the grass tears. Too rushed and you miss the overlap.
What if the grass is longer than the one-third rule allows?
Do not force the cylinder through it in one pass. Raise the cut, or use a rotary for the long growth, then return with the reel and lower the height over later cuts. An older Gardena manual’s 12 cm example, and the Fiskars 10 cm bullet, are listing limits, not targets.
Do I adjust the blades on a frictionless Gardena before I start?
No. Comfort and Plus bullets say the blades are pre-set and must not touch. The Comfort 330’s UK page states a 40 micrometre gap. A paper test and a tightening sequence belong to a traditional reel, not to that design. If a preset reel is tearing grass, stop and book a professional sharpen rather than closing the gap yourself.
When do I stop and get a professional?
Stop when the blades need grinding, when a preset gap will not hold a clean cut, when a battery is swollen or hot, or when you are hurt. The RHS sends cylinders to a professional sharpener. Clearing a jam or opening a pack is where home use ends.
