Pole saw or electric pruning shears

Updated: October 2026

The same amazon.co.uk search shows a 50 mm jaw and an 8 inch bar, and both are filed as cordless pole pruners. If you would close a pair of secateurs on it, look at a shear. If you would saw it, look at a chain. If you would shave leaves, look at a hedge trimmer, which is not this category. The [cordless pole pruner comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-pole-pruner) is the eleven-row table. This page is why the head is the first question in the [buying guide](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-pole-pruner/sub/cordless-pole-pruner-buying-guide). Peter F. used the saved listings. What a powered shear is for

A powered shear is a bypass blade with a motor, sometimes on a pole. It is for green wood in the range a secateur would attempt, not for a dry limb you would put a saw to. In this file the shear rows state jaws from about 28 mm to 50 mm. The MuatCtarom PS01 is about £176.59, a 50 mm shear, poles at 1.2 m, 1.8 m and 2.4 m, two 21 V 2 Ah packs, and 4.4 from 1,085 reviews. Reviewers cut branches around 2 inches, sometimes in two bites. Complaints include a pole that does not power the head. The ToCzernobgol bullet warns that dry wood may need another cut. A second bite on dry timber is the tool telling you it is the wrong head. Leave the shear when the wood is dry or thicker than the jaw.

What a chain on a pole is for

A chain on a pole is a short bar you keep in the air so you stay off a ladder. The Ryobi OPP1820 is about £106.95, a 20 cm Oregon bar, battery not included, 4.5 from 1,558 reviews. The POSENPRO at about £50.55 is a 4 inch bar that can leave the pole, with 11 reviews and no charger in the included line. The Supstable 5,321-review line describes a handheld mini saw in the saved text, so it is not evidence for the pole. A chain needs bar-and-chain oil and a tension check with the battery out. A shear does not. If you have chosen the bar, the fill and the collar cut are on how to use a cordless pole saw. If you have chosen the jaw, you still need a trigger routine that keeps your other hand out of the blade.

Two heads in one box

Two heads in one box are two ways to be disappointed. The Yofidra kit is about £129.99: an 8 inch saw, shears to 28 mm, two 20 V 3.0 Ah batteries and a pole of 3.3–5.6 ft. The 13.7 ft reach adds the user. It is 4.7 from 32 reviews. Oil was missing for one buyer. The INCENDIOS TAH-SCS-2121-UK is about £119.99 for shears to 30 mm and an 8 inch saw, at 4.0 from 35 reviews. One review says the charger plug was US-only, so the UK in the model name did not guarantee a BS 1363 plug. A kit suits a day with both a thin shoot and a thicker limb.

A hedge blade is neither

A hedge trimmer is outside this category. A long blade shaves soft growth and does not track a branch collar.

Common questions

What thickness is a shear for?
In these listings the stated jaws are about 28 mm on the Yofidra shears, 30 mm on the INCENDIOS shears, and 50 mm on the MuatCtarom. Green wood inside the jaw is the job. Dry wood that needs another cut is a reason to change tool, not a reason to keep squeezing.
When do you need a chain instead?
When the wood is too thick or too hard for the jaw, or you would have reached for a saw rather than secateurs. A 20 cm fixed bar, an 8 inch bar or a 4 inch clip-on are all chains, with different reach and different oil habits. A chain on a pole is for side branches from the ground. It is not a ground saw for sectioning a felled trunk.
Can you prune a hedge with a pole saw?
You can take a thick stem out of a hedge. You cannot face a Leylandii with a chainsaw bar and call it a trim. A hedge blade was removed from this comparison because it is a different head. One Yofidra review mentions reaching a hedge at about 12 feet, which is a reach story, not proof that an 8 inch bar replaces a trimmer.
What is a 4-in-1 kit actually for?
The Yofidra and INCENDIOS rows put a small bar and a small jaw in one kit, with two batteries named. Use the jaw on shoots inside about 28–30 mm and the bar on wood you would saw, and buy oil for the bar. The Yofidra sample is 32 reviews. The INCENDIOS sample is 35, including a US plug on a model marked UK.
Do shears need chain oil?
No. Chain oil is for a bar and chain. The MuatCtarom, ToCzernobgol and Prunarbo rows are jaws. Putting bar oil on a bypass blade does not help the cut. The chain half of a Yofidra or INCENDIOS kit does need oil, and an empty bottle in the INCENDIOS list means you supply it.
Which of these rows is which head?
Fixed chain: Ryobi and Bosch. Chain that the listing also sells as handheld: POSENPRO, highsam, Supstable, Gxpjycfob. Bypass shear on a pole: MuatCtarom, ToCzernobgol, Prunarbo. Chain plus shear: Yofidra and INCENDIOS. The Gxpjycfob star line is 3.5 from 43 reviews, with reports of a saw that ran as soon as the battery was fitted. That is a reason to skip it, not a third type of head.
