How to mulch mow without clumps or an empty box

Updated: October 2026

You already have a mulch plug, or one is in the carton you have just opened, and last Sunday the lawn either clumped or the grass box stayed empty. This page is how to mulch mow for a UK week: when to mulch, how short the cut should be, and when to take the plug out and collect instead. It does not rank mowers. Width, battery kits and which listing even has a plug are on the [cordless mulching lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-mulching-lawn-mower). Peter F. followed public UK guidance and the review patterns in this capture, in October 2026. We did not trial a deck. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Fit the plug only when the grass is short and dry

Mulch mowing works when the mower recuts small pieces and they fall between the blades of grass. Warwickshire describes that as air and a shaped blade doing a second cut. The RHS says a mulching mower returns clippings when you mow regularly, from March to October. If the lawn is already a hay crop, the plug is the wrong part this weekend. Dry matters as much as short. Ryobi reviewers report stalls on wet grass, and a Hyundai reviewer only got through wet grass after scraping the deck. If you can see water on your shoes, wait, or collect. A named plug on the WG737E, the Bosch kit, the Hyundai, the Ryobi and both Greenworks mowers is what this sequence assumes. The Swift states a super-mulch blade and no bag. The Einhell bullet calls side discharge mulching. Three other listings do not state a plug.

How much to cut

Warwickshire’s rule of thumb is not to take more than about a third of the leaf in one pass. If the grass is 90 mm because you were away, a drop to the lowest notch packs the deck. Raise the cut, take a first pass, and come back lower once the clippings have settled. In a dry spell, the RHS says leave the cut higher. Do not treat one product’s height numbers as the rule. The Swift cell is 30–50 mm, while a highlight says five heights against three. An 8 cm cell on the 35 cm Greenworks conflicts with a 25–70 mm bullet. Set the lever by the grass in front of you. Little and often beats a monthly rescue. If the mower keeps stalling on a high setting in dry grass, stop.

Battery out, then the chute

Take the pack off, and the safety key if your mower has one, before your hands go near the blade. The Einhell reviews mention a key. Not every listing names one. Wait until the blade has stopped. Lift the grass box off, fit the plug so it cannot fall into the blade, then refit the pack. When you want to collect, reverse it: pack out, blade stopped, plug out, box on, pack in. Leaving the plug in is the usual empty-box story. Ryobi’s plug can arrive already fitted. One Litheli reviewer found a plastic guard over the chute and only filled the box after removing it. Clear a packed deck the same way. Pack out, blade stopped, then scrape. If the trigger has died, or a pack will not seat, stop using it.

When to collect instead

Collect when the grass is long, wet, full of leaves, or you need the lawn clear. The RHS notes that collecting can help where fungal problems are a concern. That is not a diagnosis, and it is not an instruction to compost diseased clippings back onto the same lawn. Warwickshire says you may need less fertiliser if you mulch regularly. It does not publish a feed rate.

Common questions

When should you mulch, and when should you collect?
Mulch a short, dry cut when you are only taking about a third of the leaf, on a mower that states a plug or a mulching blade. Collect when the grass is long, wet or leafy, or where fungal problems are a concern. A 2-in-1 mower cannot do both at once if the plug is still in the chute.
How much grass can you take off in one pass?
Use Warwickshire’s one-third rule of thumb. If the lawn got away, raise the height, take a light pass, and lower it later. Dropping to the lowest notch in one go is how decks clump. In drought, the RHS advice is to leave the cut higher.
What do you remove before you fit the plug?
Remove the battery, and the safety key if the mower has one, and wait until the blade has stopped. Then take the box off and fit the plug. The Einhell reviews mention a key. Other listings do not, so follow the manual you have. Refit the pack only when your hands are clear.
Why is the box empty?
The usual reason is that the mulch plug is still fitted, which is how some Ryobi mowers arrive. A blocked chute or an extra plastic guard, as one Litheli owner found, can do the same. Take the pack out, then look in the chute, before you treat an empty box as a broken mower.
What height do you start on if the lawn got away?
Start higher than your usual finish and take a second pass later. Do not copy a millimetre from a listing whose cells disagree, which happens on some Greenworks and Litheli rows. If the mower labours on that higher setting in dry grass, stop and collect.
When do you stop and call someone about the mower itself?
Stop if the motor smells burnt, the trigger is dead, a pack will not charge or click in, or a pack is hot, swollen or has vented. One Greenworks review describes a battery fire after charging. That is one account, and it is the point at which a dealer should take over.
