Mulch when the grass is short and dry and you mow little and often. Collect when it is long, wet, or you want the clippings off the lawn. What changes when you close the chute

A grass box catches what the blade throws backwards. You empty it, and the lawn looks clear the same afternoon. A mulch plug, or a deck with no chute to open, keeps that grass under the blade so it is chopped again and dropped back. The Royal Horticultural Society says a mulching mower returns nutrients when you mow regularly, and that short dry clippings can be left. That is some nutrients, not a feed programme you can skip. On a small lawn the hidden effort is the walk to the compost bin, not the size of the box. Warwickshire County Council’s note says long grass will not disappear into a short sward, and that a deck which both collects and mulches is a compromise. A plug in a bagging mower is not a deck built only to mulch.

When mulch works and when it does not

The Best Mowers puts mulch on dry grass cut little and often, and collecting on grass that is long, wet or diseased, or when you want a show finish. Do not take off more than a third of the height in a pass. These pages are not a test of the twelve listings. Wet April grass is the failure mode. Clippings stick, the deck packs up, and the lawn looks worse than if you had boxed them. Diseased grass should be removed, not chopped back in. A first cut after winter is too long to mulch. Which of these mowers can do which

Two listings are mulch and no box. The swift EB122C is a 22 cm mulcher at 5.2 kg, sold up to 50 m². The Gtech SLM50 is 25 cm, about 3.2–3.5 kg, and reviews describe no box to empty. That helps on a tiny lawn you cut often. It fails after a long cut. The WORX, Greenworks, Bosch and Litheli offer a bag and mulch. Bag-first listings are the Forte (32 L and a rear roller), the LIGO (25 L), the SEYVUM (45 L) and the DEKO (40 L). One SEYVUM review says you remove a pillar fitting before the bag collects. The Einhell bullets say no collection bag and side discharge. A highlight mentions a 30 L box. Leave that unresolved until the live page shows one included-components line. Side discharge is not a mulch plug.

What to do on the first cut

The first cut of the year is a collecting job, or a wait. Set the mower high, take no more than a third, and box the clippings or rake them off. Fitting the mulch plug on that pass is how a small deck stalls. After two or three weekly cuts, when the clippings are short and the ground is dry, put the plug in. The Forte’s roller does not make a wet mulch safer. For a lawn you already mow every week in the dry, a mulch-only mower or a plug is the simpler machine. For a lawn that gets left, buy a box and treat mulch as the dry-week option. If a listing cannot show you which you are getting, pick a different row.

Common questions

Is mulching better for a small lawn?
Only when you mow little and often and the grass is dry. The RHS says regular mulching returns some nutrients. It does not say you can stop feeding the lawn. If you miss a fortnight in May, the clippings are too long to disappear.
When must I collect instead?
Collect when the grass is long, wet or diseased, or when you want the clippings in a compost bin. A show lawn and a lawn with fungal patches are collecting jobs. A dry weekly cut is the mulch job. The mower still has to offer the mode you need that week.
Can I mulch wet grass?
You should not. Mulch decks clog in the wet, and the clippings sit in clumps. The RHS also says not to mow wet ground. Wait for a dry day. If the grass has grown while you waited, collect the first pass or raise the height.
Which listings in this set have no box?
The swift and the Gtech are the mulch-only tools in the notes we have. The Einhell bullets also say there is no collection bag, but a highlight mentions a 30 L box, so that one is unresolved. The other rows claim a bag, a catcher, or both bag and plug.
What is a mulch plug?
A mulch plug blocks the chute so grass stays under the deck to be chopped again. On the WORX, Bosch, Litheli, Greenworks and Murray it turns a collecting mower into a mulching one. It is not the same as a deck built only to mulch, such as the swift. You still need short, dry grass.
Will mulch replace lawn feed?
Not as a figure you can take from these listings. The RHS says regular mulching returns some of what you cut. That is not a fertiliser schedule. If the lawn is pale or mossy, mulch will not replace the care you were already putting off.
Why does the Einhell page disagree with itself?
The bullets say the GE-CM 18 has no collection bag and side discharge. A highlight on the same listing mentions a 30 L box. Both lines are saved, and they cannot both describe one carton. Check the live included-components list, and treat the bag as unresolved until then.
