Cordless lawn mower buying guide for a small garden

Updated: October 2026

You have a terrace, a front lawn the size of a parking bay, or a back garden you can cross in a minute, and every title says “small”. A cordless lawn mower buying guide for a small garden has to start with your lawn, not with the voltage on the largest type. This page sets width, battery energy and the height floor. Prices and stars sit on the [cordless lawn mower for small gardens comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-lawn-mower-for-small-gardens). Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk listings on 22 October 2026. We did not mow with these machines. A purchase through a link can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

How wide a deck for your lawn

Which? does not use one cut-point. On “5 things to know if you're buying a lawn mower”, lawns up to 50 m² are paired with a cutting width below 35 cm, and lawns of 50–150 m² with 35–45 cm. The separate Which? buyer’s guide puts small lawns under 50 m² at 30–34 cm and medium lawns of 50–150 m² at 35–40 cm. Treat them as two rules of thumb, not as a British Standard. In this folder the swift EB122C is 22 cm with a seller ceiling of 50 m². The Gtech SLM50 is 25 cm and prints no square metres. The middle is 32–34 cm, including the Einhell up to 200 m². The WORX WG737E is 37 cm and up to 550 m². A wider deck finishes an open rectangle faster and is clumsy in a tight space. If the lawn is under about 50 m² and broken by beds, start at 22–34 cm.

What the battery number actually buys

The voltage on the carton is a poor guide to how long you will mow. Energy is voltage times amp-hours, in watt-hours. That product is a rule of thumb so you can compare packs. It is not a figure printed on these listings. An 18 V 4.0 Ah pack, as on the Einhell and the Bosch, is about 72 Wh. A 24 V 2.0 Ah pack, as on the Greenworks, is about 48 Wh. Two 20 V 4.0 Ah packs, as on the WORX, are about 160 Wh. The swift’s 40 V 2.0 Ah pack is about 80 Wh, so a 40 V badge does not mow more lawn than an 18 V 4.0 Ah kit by itself. Which? averaged about 22 minutes across the cordless mowers it tested, from about 10 minutes to more than 40. “Up to 35 minutes” on the swift is a light-grass ceiling, not the April cut. The Greenworks table prints 150 metres, not a time, and one owner of that 2 Ah kit reported about seven minutes.

Height, clippings and the plug

The Royal Horticultural Society puts an ordinary lawn at 13–25 mm in summer and up to 40 mm in spring and autumn. Fine lawns at 6–13 mm need another tool. These rotaries mostly bottom out around 20–30 mm. The WORX goes to 20 mm. The swift starts at 30 mm. The Gtech table shows only two positions, written as 2–10 cm, and several reviews say the short setting is still too long. You should not buy that mower for a 13 mm finish if that table is using the wrong unit. Clippings are a separate decision, on the mulching or collecting page. The swift and the Gtech mulch and do not offer a box in the material we have. The Einhell bullets say no collection bag, while a highlight mentions a 30 L box, so that carton is unresolved.

What to check in the box

Check that a battery and a charger are in the kit. Most of these listings include at least one pack. The Gtech bullets do not itemise the pack, although reviews say a battery and a plug are in the box. The files do not print BS 1363. UK mains are 230 V, and the plug you need is a square-pin 13 A type. Litheli reviews mention a charger lead with no mains adapter. Do not copy that fault onto the other eleven. None of these twelve states a driven axle. A line that the mower glides like a self-propelled mower is not a drive. Measure the lawn and stay inside a seller ceiling you believe. Match the width using the two Which bands. Then compare watt-hours and insist the pack is in the box.

Common questions

What width suits a lawn under 50 m²?
Which? offers two wordings for under 50 m²: below 35 cm on its news page, and 30–34 cm on its buyer’s guide. The swift at 22 cm and the Gtech at 25 cm are the narrow tools here. Pace the longest clear run before you order a wider deck.
Is 40 V more lawn than 18 V 4.0 Ah?
Not by itself. A 40 V 2.0 Ah pack is about 80 Wh and an 18 V 4.0 Ah pack is about 72 Wh. Two 20 V 4.0 Ah packs are about 160 Wh. The higher badge only wins if the amp-hours keep up.
Does “up to 45 minutes” mean the April cut?
No. “Up to” is a light-grass ceiling. The SEYVUM claims up to 45 minutes, and one review described a 20-minute mow. Long, damp April grass empties a small pack sooner, so plan a second battery or a second pass. Which? averaged about 22 minutes.
Do I need the battery in the box?
Yes, unless you already own a pack the listing says fits. The Gtech bullets do not itemise a pack, though reviews say one is supplied. A bare tool looks cheaper until you price a 4.0 Ah battery. Check the included-components line on the day you order.
How do I know the charger has a UK plug?
You do not, from these files. None prints BS 1363. UK plugs are square-pin, for 230 V. Litheli reviews include a charger lead with no mains adapter. That is one listing. Ask before you rely on a Schuko lead in the rain.
When is 37–40 cm too wide?
When the lawn is a strip, a terrace, or anything you cannot mow in long straight runs. The DEKO is 38 cm and the SEYVUM is 40 cm. Those decks save time on an open rectangle and cost you time where you turn every few steps.
