How to use a brush cutter

Updated: October 2026

The tool is in the shed, or the box arrived this morning, and a metal head will throw whatever is in the grass. You want the sequence that keeps the guard on, the lead or the battery under control, and other people out of the way. This is how to use a brush cutter in the corded and cordless set on the [brush cutter comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/brush-cutter). There is no petrol machine here, so there is no choke and no pull cord. Peter F. did not run a lab test. The distances below are each source's own instruction, not one UK legal radius. Before you start

Walk the patch before you fit a battery or plug in. Put on boots, and eye protection you will keep on. Gloves help with thorns. They are not a proven control for vibration. If you are cutting for an employer, the action value is 2.5 m/s² A(8) and the limit is 5 m/s² A(8). INDG480's typical band for this tool type is about 3 to 5 m/s². A face shield to EN166 on a hire leaflet is for that hire machine, not a claim about every kit here. Check the power before you look at the plants. Bosch is corded: the lead has to reach, and it has to stay behind you. A lithium row on that listing conflicts with the title. Ryobi and Einhell are bodies only. If the pack is flat, you do not have a working tool yet. Light kits state batteries in the box. Bosch states 82.5 dB(A) sound pressure and 93.5 dB(A) sound power for that corded tool only.

Harness, handles and the guard

Use a belt or harness when the tool is heavy and the listing supplies one. Bosch states an adjustable belt on a 5.3 kg shaft, and reviews say it takes weight onto the shoulders. Fit it before you start. The same reviews still call a long session tiring, including for a frail user. Ryobi lists 7.08 kg and does not name a harness in the bullets. Einhell lists 6.09 kg and does not name a harness in the included line. If the box has no belt, do not copy a petrol video. Stop when your grip goes. Keep the guard fitted, the head clear of the ground, and both hands on the handles. Ryobi states a bike handle. Set a telescopic shaft so you are not leaning into the cut. HSE says follow the manufacturer's cutting tool and guard, and take linked-metal flail heads out of service. A guard that is off is not a wider cut.

Starting and choosing the head

Several kits state a lock and a trigger together: SUAIIOLK, Gompuy, both LEEIKOO listings, VFMFM and KEJSNDXC. Press both, let the head reach speed, then meet the plants. Bosch, Ryobi and Einhell do not state that pair here, so use the sheet in that box. Assembly is required on the Bosch. Einhell's listing says it is not. The blade nut should be tight first. Choose the head for the plant, and leave the other one in the box until the tool has stopped. Line is for grass after the heavy growth is down. A metal blade is what Bosch reviews use on brambles. A 15 cm blade is a smaller head. Saw blades in a light kit are not a reason to remove the guard, and they are not a chainsaw. Do not fit a chain-flail disc. If someone walks towards you, stop. A hire leaflet and Husqvarna's page both say 10 metres. A Canal & River Trust talk says 15 metres. Those are separate instructions, not one distance in UK law.

When to stop

Stop when the head smokes, when a blade comes loose, or when a tooth has worn down. One Umbryxion review, from August 2026, reported smoke on the second use. One LEEIKOO review said the teeth wore out on nettles and the blade worked loose. Another said the tool fell apart on first use. One Gompuy review said the anti-collision bracket snapped. Stop, rather than tighten and carry on. Stop, or do not start, when the growth is trees, when the land is not yours, or when you cannot control the weight. Employees on long jobs need a vibration assessment, not a longer session. Choosing the machine is on the brush cutter buying guide.

Common questions

What should I wear?
Boots, and eye protection you will actually keep on. Gloves help with thorns. They do not remove vibration risk. Bosch's listing states 93.5 dB(A) sound power for that corded tool only, so treat hearing protection as sensible on that machine. Home use sits outside the employer noise rules.
How do I fit a harness if the box does not include one?
Fit the belt Bosch states, on that 5.3 kg tool, before you start. If the listing does not include a harness, as the Einhell included line does not, do not copy a petrol video and hope the clips match. Shorten the session, or use a harness the manufacturer allows for that model.
How do I start a cordless tool that has a safety lock?
On the kits whose bullets name both controls, press the lock and the trigger together, let the head reach speed, then bring it to the growth. Bosch, Ryobi and Einhell do not state that pair in these notes, so use the sheet in that box. If you cannot tell which button is the lock, do not guess with the head in the grass.
When do I use the blade instead of the line?
Use the metal blade for brambles, thick weeds and neglected stems. Use the line, on a tool that includes one, for grass once that heavy growth is down. Bosch states both. A light kit that only states metal blades does not grow a nylon head because the title also says strimmer.
When do I stop and get help?
Stop if the head smokes, if a blade works loose, if you cannot control the weight, or if the growth is trees or someone else's land. One smoke report and one loose-blade report in this set are enough of a pattern to take seriously. A longer session is not a substitute for a work assessment.
