Brush cutter buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a title that says brush cutter, and the price may not be a tool that cuts today. Some boxes hold a blade, a line and a mains lead. Others are a bare body waiting for a battery you may not own. A few are 15 cm kits that say strimmer and brush cutter in one sentence. This brush cutter buying guide orders the job, the box, the stated width and the weight. The full table is on the [brush cutter comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/brush-cutter). Peter F. wrote this from those listings, not a lab test. Petrol is not in this batch. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A brush cutter, in the sense UK shop guides use, is a shaft tool for brambles, coarse weeds and light woody growth, usually with a metal blade and often a nylon line as well. A strimmer, which many people also call a grass trimmer, is the lighter tool for lawn edges. This batch has no petrol machine. The trap on amazon.co.uk is the title itself. Gompuy's D-001 at about £29.99 says brush cutter and also says it suits small and medium gardens, with a stated 15 cm cut and a weight of 2.5 kg. That is a light blade kit, not the same class as the Bosch AFS 23-37, which states a 23 cm blade, a 37 cm line and 5.3 kg. Before you compare stars, read the cutting system and what the box actually includes.

Corded, cordless, or a battery you already own

Corded power, in B&Q's framing, means the motor runs for as long as the lead reaches a socket. The only mains machine here is the Bosch AFS 23-37 at about £124.90, listed at 950 W, with one brushcutter blade and three lines in the box, plus an adjustable belt. A lithium-battery row conflicts with the corded title, so follow the lead. The cable has to stay out of the blade. The Ryobi OBC1820B at about £155.00 is an 18 V ONE+ body, and the title excludes the battery and charger. The Einhell Agillo at about £158.99 says without battery and needs two 18 V PXC packs to make 36 V. A 12 V row on that listing conflicts with the title and is not the spec to follow. If those packs are already charged, the body-only price can be the cheaper route to a shaft. If they are not, that price is only the tool. Light kits from about £29.99 include two small batteries and a charger.

Blade, line and stated width

The head decides the plant more than the motor slogan does. Nylon line is the sensible head for soft grass and edges. A metal blade is what the shaft tools here state for coarser growth. Bosch puts both in the box: a 23 cm blade and a 37 cm line. Ryobi states a 20 cm tri-arc blade and a 30 cm line path, and the battery is still extra. Einhell states a three-tooth blade and a bump-feed line. Its cutting-width field says 30 cm and a highlight also says 25.5 cm, so both figures stay on the page rather than being averaged. Most cheaper kits state about 15 cm, where a width is stated at all. Gompuy says 15 cm. VFMFM says 15.2 cm. SUAIIOLK gives no centimetre width. Both LEEIKOO listings include saw blades, which is not a forestry head. Umbryxion prints a cutting width of 5.0 with no unit.

Weight, belt and the review sample

Bosch lists 5.3 kg and an adjustable belt. Reviews say that belt takes weight onto the shoulders, and that a long session is still tiring, including for a frail user who has the belt on. Ryobi lists 7.08 kg, the heaviest figure in this set, and the bullets do not name a harness. Einhell lists 6.09 kg, and the included line does not answer whether a harness is in the box. Light kits are about 1.13 kg to 3.42 kg, and the VFMFM field and a pounds bullet disagree. For employers, INDG480's typical band is about 3 to 5 m/s², and gloves are not a proven vibration control. Stars need a count beside them. Bosch is 4.6 from 2,695. A 4.5 from 32 ratings is not the same evidence. Who should skip the Bosch is on the best brush cutter page.

Common questions

Should I buy corded, cordless or petrol?
This batch has no petrol machine, so the choice is corded or cordless. Corded is the Bosch if a socket is close and you can keep the lead behind the blade. Cordless is a body that needs packs you already own, or a light kit with batteries in the box. Petrol is a different shop.
Does the price include a battery and charger?
Ryobi and Einhell exclude the battery. Einhell needs two 18 V packs, not the conflicting 12 V row. Bosch is corded. Gompuy, the kits up to VFMFM, and SUAIIOLK state batteries in the box. Read that line before you treat the shelf price as a finished tool.
Is there a metal blade, and what width is stated?
Bosch states a 23 cm blade and a 37 cm line, both in the box. Ryobi states a 20 cm blade and a 30 cm line, without a battery. Einhell prints both 30 cm and 25.5 cm. Several light kits state about 15 cm. If the listing gives no centimetre width, you cannot invent one from the title.
How heavy is it, and is a belt listed?
Bosch is 5.3 kg with an adjustable belt in the bullets. Ryobi is 7.08 kg with no harness named. Einhell is 6.09 kg, and the included line does not answer the harness question. A belt helps a long session. It does not make 5.3 kg suitable for a frail user, which is what those Bosch reviews say.
What if the voltage row disagrees with the title?
Follow the title and the bullets that agree, and keep the clash visible. Einhell's 12 V row is not the spec when the title says 36 V from two 18 V packs. Both LEEIKOO listings have a 9 V row against 2.0 Ah bullets. One KEJSNDXC review says the page stated 24 V and the unit was 21 V. Check the parcel. Do not average the two figures.
