How to use an electric lawnmower

Updated: October 2026

The mower is already in the hall, the grass has grown over a wet British week, and you want the first cut without slicing the lead. This is how to use an electric lawnmower for a Bosch corded or cordless rotary from the [Bosch electric lawnmower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/bosch-electric-lawnmower). Dry grass, a working RCD on a mains machine, and the blade stopped before you clear the chute matter before any stripe or mulch plug. Peter F. wrote this in October 2026 from Electrical Safety First, Bosch’s UK notes, and these amazon.co.uk listings. There was no safety test. Before the motor starts

Walk the lawn before you think about height. Stones, toys, and a hidden hose are what the blade will throw or jam. Electrical Safety First’s advice is to clear debris first, and to keep children and pets off the grass. Closed shoes beat sandals. Fit the collector until it stays clicked. Corded UK reviews often call the plastic box flimsy, and on the UniversalRotak 34-410 the handle is said to fall off when the box is full. Seat the box and test the catch with the motor off. If it will not hold an empty box, use the booklet or the seller rather than mowing with a loose collector. Cordless titles here use a fabric bag. Seat that before the first pass. Width stays on the buying guide.

Lead, plug, and RCD

A corded Bosch in this set is a 230 V machine with a UK 3-pin plug. Electrical Safety First asks for a fused BS 1363 plug, an RCD on outdoor equipment, and an outdoor extension that is fully unwound, with a thermal cut-out. Do not daisy-chain reels. A plug-in RCD on an existing socket is interim protection. A new outdoor circuit is an electrician’s job. Mow away from the cable. These listings do not print a lead length, and reviewers call the corded cables short. One AdvancedRotak reviewer says 10 m. That figure belongs to that one review. If the mower is cordless, fit the pack only when you are about to cut, and keep the charger indoors. The £181 ROTAK18V-32 includes a 4.0 Ah pack and a charger. The £132.60 and £154.97 bodies do not. A pro drill battery is not confirmed as the same slide.

Height and the first pass

Set the deck high for the first cut of the season, or whenever the grass has got away. Bosch’s UK notes say to take about one third of the height on a regular cut. That is their advice, not a British Standard, and it is a poor match for a lawn that is ankle deep. A high first pass, then a lower pass on a later dry day, clogs less than one low scalp. Unplug a corded mower, or remove the battery, before you move the lever. Use the lever you can see. The EasyRotak 32-225 prints 25–65 mm and a positions cell that says 1. The 34-410 height cell says 34 centimetres, which is not a credible cut next to a setting near 25 mm. Bosch’s page for the AdvancedRotak part states 25–80 mm in seven steps, which the Amazon cells omit. If the booklet and the listing disagree, follow the booklet.

When to stop

Stop if you smell burning, if the motor surges and dies, or if the mower runs away on a slope. Mow across the face of a slope, and leave a steep bank alone. A pack that cuts out is a stop as well. Kit reviews mention about an hour and also 10–15 minutes. Neither number is a promise. Stop immediately if you cut or nick the lead. Unplug at the socket before you pick the cable up. Do not splice it with tape and finish the lawn.

Common questions

Can I mow wet grass with an electric Bosch?
No. Electrical Safety First tells you not to mow in the wet, and that covers a corded plug and a damp cordless session alike. Wet grass clogs the deck and makes a slip more likely. A single review that managed a damp cut does not change that. Wait until the lawn and your shoes are dry, then cut. If the soil is still soft, the mower will scalp and leave ruts.
Do I need an RCD?
For a corded mower used outdoors, Electrical Safety First asks for RCD protection. A plug-in RCD on the existing socket is the interim step they describe. It does not replace a new outdoor circuit if you need one, and fitting that circuit is an electrician’s job. A cordless mower does not use that mains RCD while it is running on the pack. The charger still belongs indoors on a sound socket.
How should the extension sit on the lawn?
Use one outdoor reel, fully unwound, with a thermal cut-out, and do not daisy-chain a second reel. Keep the cable on grass you have already cut, and mow away from it. Stop if the next turn would put the lead in front of the deck. These Bosch listings do not state a lead length. Reviewers call the cables short, and one 10 m remark on an AdvancedRotak is only that review.
When do I unplug or remove the battery?
Before you clear a blockage, adjust the height, empty a jammed box, or leave the mower to answer the door. Unplug the corded machine at the socket, or take the pack off the cordless machine, and wait until the blade has stopped. Fitting the grass box for the first time is part of that same stopped state. Do not rely on the handle switch alone while your fingers are under the deck.
How short should the first cut be?
Start high, especially in spring or after a holiday. Bosch advises taking about one third of the grass height on a regular cut, which is too much to attempt in one pass on a lawn that has been left for weeks. A high pass, then a lower pass on another dry day, matches that advice better. Do not trust a listing cell that says the cut is 34 centimetres or that there is only one height if the lever shows more.
