Snake plant buying guide: height, pot and leaf form

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to order a live snake plant on amazon.co.uk, and the photo looks like a plant that already fills a corner of the room. The parcel in this set is smaller. This snake plant buying guide uses the seven listings checked on 20 October 2026: a 5.5 cm or 9 cm nursery pot, priced from about £9.99 to about £16.99. Before you pay, match the height line, the leaf shape and the pot that is actually included. The [snake plant comparison](/hub/houseplants/snake-plant) puts those seven side by side. Peter F. read the listings and the Royal Horticultural Society pages. There is no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a snake plant listing is actually selling

These seven amazon.co.uk listings sell a young live snake plant, mother-in-law's tongue, in a 5.5 cm or 9 cm nursery pot. On 20 October 2026 the Moonshine was about £9.99 (B0B3M3X2SW, 9 cm). Four listings were about £13.99: the Carbeth sword (B08L8W3LC8), the spaghetti cylindrica (B0CNKP77GX) and the straight cylindrica plants B0CVGQ8QV1 and B0CNKLWSB3. The trios were about £15.00 (B0GRJG699J) and about £16.99 (B0H3QHMLW6), both 5.5 cm pots with three plants. A higher trio price is not automatically the better spend. Three small rosettes can cover a shelf sooner, though each has less compost than the single 9 cm Moonshine. Where a field says peat soil and a bullet says peat-free, both lines are on the page and neither proves the compost in the pot. The RHS recommends peat-free, free-draining compost when you pot on. On B0CNKP77GX and B0CNKLWSB3 the bullets say one or two plants while the items field says 1, so plan for one plant. Which form suits you is on best snake plant.

Read the height, not the hero photo

The height that belongs to the box is the line that describes what is supplied, including the pot. On B0CNKP77GX and B0CNKLWSB3 that line is 20–25 cm including the pot. The Carbeth sword carries an expected-height field of 30 cm. B0CVGQ8QV1, model CPSMLINDRSTRI, states a mature height of about 0.75–1 m and does not state the height supplied. Treat that mature figure as a later size, because the parcel height is missing. The RHS page for Sansevieria trifasciata puts ultimate height at 1–1.5 m over 5–10 years. That is the species after years in a pot, and it is a different measurement from a 20–25 cm dispatch line. Snake plants grow slowly. The RHS growing guide says to buy a larger specimen if you want impact now, and to choose firm, fleshy leaves that are not wrinkled, on a plant that does not wobble in the pot. A 9 cm listing stays a shelf plant this year. The tall ceramic in the photo is the shop's styling.

Sword, Moonshine or cylindrica

At these prices you are choosing a leaf form, and the three forms here are different plants. Sword-leaf listings, including Carbeth, have upright blades with cross-banding. Moonshine (B0B3M3X2SW) is the pale silvery sword in a 9 cm pot at about £9.99. Cylindrica has round leaves: B0CNKP77GX is the twisted spaghetti form at 20–25 cm including the pot, while B0CVGQ8QV1 and B0CNKLWSB3 are straighter cylinders. The same about £13.99 can be a twist or a straight leaf, and those two straight listings do not share a supplied-height sentence. Match the bullet to the leaf in the gallery. Laurentii, Hahnii and whale-fin are common in UK shops and in many round-ups. They are absent from these seven listings. The RHS page for Laurentii gives an ultimate height of 0.5–1 m, shorter than 1–1.5 m for trifasciata, and Laurentii is a different plant. A yellow edge, a low rosette or a single broad fin is a plant you have not checked here.

Pot, stars and the air-purifying line

The ceramic pot in a styled photo often stays with the photographer. Bullets on B0H3QHMLW6, B0CNKP77GX and B0CNKLWSB3 say the decorative pot is not included. On B0GRJG699J a decor pot is included only on set 2. The RHS Plants shop uses the same warning on other sansevierias: the pot in the photograph is not supplied. Budget for a cachepot if you want that look, and keep a way for the nursery pot to drain. Standing water in an outer pot is covered on the snake plant care page. Stars need the same close reading. B08L8W3LC8 shows 4.5 from 622 reviews, and other species sit in that sample, so 622 is not 622 reports on this snake plant. B0CNKLWSB3 is 3.9 from 39, with crush and size complaints you can set against its 20–25 cm line. B0H3QHMLW6, B0CNKP77GX and B0CVGQ8QV1 had no review line in this pass. An empty rating is an absence of reviews. Titles that say air purifying point at NASA-TM-101766, a 1989 memorandum that tested mother-in-law's tongue in a sealed chamber. That result is not a measurement of a ventilated UK living room.

If the plant arrives poor

Satisfactory quality follows the description and the price. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must meet that standard. A crushed rosette, or a plant far smaller than the supplied-height line, is a problem with what was described. A 9 cm plant that looks modest beside a hero photo is the size the listing sold when the bullets said 9 cm or 20–25 cm including the pot. Which? says to report a damaged or dying posted plant promptly, because plants can be treated as perishable. Photograph the plant in the open box, keep the packaging, and contact the seller while the damage is obvious. GOV.UK still expects a plant passport when a professional operator sells plants for planting by distance sale to a customer in Great Britain. A passport number is not confirmed for these ASINs. Northern Ireland uses a different plant-health regime, so keep any label that arrives if you later report a pest. Read snake plant and pets before you choose a spot. The RHS classes snake plant as harmful if eaten, and the sap can irritate skin.

Common questions

Is the height in the title the height including the pot?
Only when the listing says so. On B0CNKP77GX and B0CNKLWSB3 the bullet is 20–25 cm including the pot. The Carbeth sword, B08L8W3LC8, shows an expected-height field of 30 cm. B0CVGQ8QV1 gives a mature height of about 0.75–1 m and does not state the height supplied. The RHS figure of 1–1.5 m over 5–10 years is the species at maturity. It is the wrong number for a 9 cm nursery pot.
Will the ceramic pot in the photo arrive?
Often the styled pot stays out of the box. Bullets on B0H3QHMLW6, B0CNKP77GX and B0CNKLWSB3 say the decorative pot is not included. B0GRJG699J includes a decor pot only on set 2. The RHS Plants shop says the pot in the photograph is not supplied, on a Laurentii page separate from these seven listings. Buy a cover pot yourself if you want that look, and keep a way for water to drain.
Is a 9 cm snake plant a full-grown plant?
A 9 cm pot, such as the Moonshine at about £9.99, is a nursery size. The RHS describes trifasciata as slow, with an ultimate height of 1–1.5 m over 5–10 years, and says to buy larger if you want impact now. Firm, fleshy leaves that are not wrinkled, and a plant that does not wobble, are the checks at this size. You will have a shelf plant this year. The metre-tall habit comes later, if you keep it and pot it on.
What is the difference between a 5.5 cm trio and one 9 cm plant?
B0GRJG699J at about £15.00 and B0H3QHMLW6 at about £16.99 are three plants in 5.5 cm pots. The Moonshine at about £9.99 is one plant in a 9 cm pot. Three rosettes can cover more shelf at once, though each has less compost than the single 9 cm plant. Paying more for a trio is not automatically the sounder buy. On B0CNKP77GX and B0CNKLWSB3 the bullets say one or two plants while the items field says 1, so plan for one.
How do I tell sword-leaf, Moonshine and cylindrica apart before I order?
Sword-leaf plants have flat upright blades, usually with cross-banding, as on the Carbeth listing. Moonshine, B0B3M3X2SW, is the pale silvery sword in a 9 cm pot. Cylindrica has round leaves: twisted on B0CNKP77GX, straighter on B0CVGQ8QV1 and B0CNKLWSB3. Match the gallery to those words. Laurentii, Hahnii and whale-fin are widely sold in Britain and are not in these seven listings.
Can I trust the star rating on a Carbeth listing?
Treat B08L8W3LC8's 4.5 from 622 as a mixed sample. Other species appear in that set, so it is not 622 reports on this snake plant alone. B0CNKLWSB3, at 3.9 from 39, includes crush and size complaints you can read against the 20–25 cm line. B0H3QHMLW6, B0CNKP77GX and B0CVGQ8QV1 had no star line in this pass. An empty rating means no published score here.
What do I do if the plant arrives crushed or much smaller than the listing?
Photograph the plant in the packaging and tell the seller straight away. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires satisfactory quality given the description and the price. Which? says to report a damaged or dying posted plant promptly, because plants may be treated as perishable. A plant that matches a written 9 cm pot or a 20–25 cm line is the size you ordered. Keep any plant-passport label. A passport number is not confirmed on these ASINs.
