Banana plant care: water, light, feed and repotting

Updated: 21 October 2026

The 6 cm, 9 cm or 12 cm pot has arrived, and the bullet says to water regularly. Banana plant care for that first fortnight is light, compost that can drain, and a refusal to drop the plug into a tub on day one. Dwarf is not a windowsill size. The RHS puts Dwarf Cavendish and Ensete 'Maurelii' at 2.5–4 metres once grown. This page is water, light, feed and the first repot. It does not rank the Carbeth listings on the [banana plant comparison](/hub/houseplants/banana-plant). Peter F. used RHS container advice and the listing lines. There was no laboratory test.

The first week after delivery

Put the plant in the brightest sheltered spot before you change the pot. The Ensete listing says full sun to partial shade. Both Musa listings say they love the sun, and that cold air or wind can be harmful. A north-facing flat is a poor fit. Dispatch size is 15–20 cm including the pot on the 6 cm pair, a 9 cm pot on the Ensete, and a 12 cm expected-height field on the 12 cm Musa. Which genus you bought is on dwarf Cavendish vs Ensete. Do not soak a cold pot on the evening it arrives. Let it warm and tip out standing water. Do not repot into a tub on day one. If the nursery pot is cracked, move it only slightly wider, with a drainage hole.

Water and a pot that drains

In spring and summer the RHS says water bananas freely in containers. The Ensete listing says moderate watering and well-drained soil. Both Musa listings say moist but well drained, with the top inch left to dry. Do not merge that with a shop line about the top 2–3 cm. Never leave a saucer full. Misting is not watering. These sources give no humidity figure. Indoors in winter, water less and let the compost dry. When the pot comes in is on banana plant winter.

Feed and the next pot size

The RHS names peat-free John Innes No 3 with about 30 per cent grit, and a step of about 5–7.5 cm in diameter for a young plant. Gardeners' World says the next pot should be no more than twice the present size. A 6 cm pot wants something near 12 cm, not a tub. Feed in the growing season, not the week a cold parcel arrives. Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly, the RHS line for Dwarf Cavendish. A high-potassium feed every fortnight is a Gardeners' World schedule, not a second dose on top. Do not feed sodden compost.

Yellow leaves and pests

One lower leaf yellowing on a mature plant can be normal. Widespread yellowing can be too much water, too little water, too little light, cold or a draught. If the roots are dark and soft, more water makes rot worse. Under glass the RHS names red spider mite, mealybugs and aphids on Dwarf Cavendish. Wipe a light presence off a small plant. A heavy coating on arrival is a seller problem. Nothing in these files is an air-purifying test.

When to ask the seller

A dry plug, a bent tip and one torn leaf can settle with light and a modest pot. Contact the seller if the plant arrives rotten or heavily infested and a replacement is refused. Photograph the roots and the label that day. Small against the lifestyle photo is a common Ensete review. Small is not rotten. If a pet is distressed after eating foliage, call a vet. The ASPCA lists Musa acuminata as non-toxic to cats, dogs and horses. That entry does not cover Ensete.

Common questions

When do I move it out of the 6 cm, 9 cm or 12 cm nursery pot?
Not on day one, unless the pot is broken and you only step up slightly. The RHS increases a young plant's pot by about 5–7.5 cm in diameter in spring, into peat-free John Innes No 3 with grit. Gardeners' World says no more than twice the present size. A 6 cm pot does not go into a tub.
What compost and feed does the RHS name for a container?
Peat-free John Innes No 3 with about 30 per cent grit, and a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly in the growing season for Dwarf Cavendish. A high-potassium feed every fortnight in summer is a Gardeners' World schedule, not an extra dose on top of the monthly feed. The Ensete listing does not state a fertiliser. Do not feed a cold, newly arrived plug in sodden compost.
Why are the lower leaves turning yellow?
One older lower leaf on a mature plant can be normal. Yellowing across many leaves can be too much water, too little water, too little light, cold or a draught. Check whether the roots are dark and soft before you water again. On a plant that has just arrived, cold post and a wet saucer are the first things to rule out.
Should I mist it, and is that the same as watering?
No. Misting wets the leaf. Watering has to reach the compost and then leave the pot. These sources do not give a humidity percentage, so a spray bottle is not a care plan. In winter, water less and let the compost dry before the next watering. The winter page covers when the pot comes indoors.
What pests show up under glass?
The RHS names glasshouse red spider mite, mealybugs and aphids on Dwarf Cavendish. Look under the leaves and in the joints once the plant is in a warm room. A light presence can be cleaned off a small plant. A heavy infestation on arrival is a reason to contact the seller if a replacement is refused, not a reason to soak the pot.
