How to use a water dispenser safely

Updated: 17.10.2026

If the first glass tastes odd, the flow has slowed or a new machine will not heat, the fix depends on the type you own. How to use a water dispenser is not one set of steps: a carbon cartridge needs flushing, a heater needs descaling, and a bottle pump needs the right neck seal. Use the [water dispenser comparison](/hub/hot-water/water-dispenser) to identify your type, then follow the instructions for that exact model. A flush volume written for one cartridge should not be copied to another boiler. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

First water that tastes odd

An odd taste or a few dark particles from a new filter can come from carbon dust or a skipped first flush. Seat the cartridge as the maker states and follow that priming and discard instruction. Do not invent a litre count. Evolve+, MAXTRA PRO and Taste+ do not share one verified start-up routine. Cartridge products here include the Lumi, Aurora, Perfect Pour, BRITA Flow and the Philips dispenser. CASO lists a filter in its highlight. Waterdrop claims an eight-stage and UV system. Perfect Pour’s title and bullets differ on filter quantity, so check the box. The VKJ142’s permanent limescale filter is not a removable-cartridge routine. Wash only parts the manual marks as washable, and keep ports and bases dry. The KAVAVO pump is not waterproof. If the taste remains after the specified flush, reseat the correct cartridge once. Stop if the water smells chemical or the tank is damaged, and contact the seller.

Slow flow or a short cup

On a filter tank, slow flow can mean the cartridge is unseated, airlocked or exhausted. BRITA says a MAXTRA PRO should be changed at least every four weeks, with roughly 150 litres cited around 10–12°dH. Harder water can shorten that. On a HotCup, Breville says scale can restrict performance, and a low volume setting can also shorten a cup. The VKJ142 lists a fixed 250 ml serving. The VKJ318 has nine sizes and a manual stop. Check the setting, water level and drip tray before you assume an electrical fault. Descale from the exact model manual. Both Brevilles are listed at 3,000 W, CASO at 2,600 W and Aurora at 2,100 W. Breville advises descaling more often in harder water, and about monthly in very hard areas. Do not copy a vinegar ratio from another HotCup booklet. A cartridge does not cancel descaling. The hard-water guide covers local hardness.

A pump, a jug or a button is a different job

A bottle pump that will not seal may be on the wrong bottle. KAVAVO and the foldable D18 are listed for a 5-gallon class, roughly 18.9 litres. UK reviews say some 5-litre supermarket bottles do not fit. Use only the supplied adapter. If it fits but does not run, use the charger the maker names and check the hose for a kink. KAVAVO’s listing includes a 5 V 2 A note and says not to use a fast charger. Stop if the socket is loose, broken or wet. Fill a gravity jug with a suitable cold drink and use the spigot. The VIDETOL listing gives no safe hot-liquid temperature, so do not pour boiling water into it. CASO’s 37°C button and Waterdrop’s formula preset are not the NHS method for powdered formula: fresh cold tap water, boiled, and still at least 70°C when mixed. Do not use previously boiled or artificially softened water.

When it is no longer user error

Stop if a mains dispenser trips a breaker, smells burnt, leaks into electrical parts or never heats after the basic checks. Do not keep resetting the circuit or opening the housing. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. Note the fault and the order date, then contact the seller. A new socket for a 3 kW machine is a job for an electrician. A plumber applies to a mains-connected tap, not these hand-filled units. Do not cure an unstated plug with a travel adaptor. RoSPA notes that hot drinks are a leading scald cause for under-fives and can still scald 15 minutes later. For which heater to buy, see the best hot water dispenser page.

Common questions

Why does my new filtered water taste odd?
Loose carbon dust or a cartridge that was not primed can affect the first water. Seat the correct cartridge and follow that manufacturer’s flush-and-discard instruction. Do not borrow a litre count from another brand. If the taste remains after the official routine, stop using the unit and contact support.
How often should I descale a Breville HotCup?
Frequency depends on local hardness and use. Breville advises more frequent descaling in harder water and gives about monthly as a guide in very hard areas. Ask your water company about local hardness, then follow the manual for your exact HotCup model and approved descaling method.
Why is my HotCup serving less water?
Check the selected volume, tank level and signs of scale. Breville notes that a short cup can result from scale or a control set too low. The VKJ142 is listed for a fixed 250 ml, while the VKJ318 has variable settings, so the expected amount differs by model.
Why will my bottle pump not seal?
It may be the wrong bottle neck. The pumps here target a 5-gallon class, and reviewers report inconsistent fit on smaller 5-litre bottles. Verify the neck and the adapter before treating poor suction as a motor failure. Forcing the seal is not a fix.
Can I use a warm-water or formula preset for baby milk?
Do not rely on the preset name. NHS guidance for powdered infant formula requires fresh cold tap water that has been boiled and remains at least 70°C when mixed, with no previously boiled or artificially softened water. Follow that method and the formula maker’s instructions.
When should I stop troubleshooting?
Stop immediately for breaker trips, burning smells, electrical leaks or a unit that never heats after basic checks. Contact the seller. Use an electrician for circuit work and a plumber only for a supply-connected appliance. Do not open a mains dispenser yourself.
