Water dispenser for hard water: filters and limescale

Updated: 17.10.2026

If your kettle quickly develops a white crust, a water dispenser for hard water still needs a maintenance plan. A cartridge may improve taste and reduce some scale. It does not automatically soften the water, sterilise it or end descaling on a heater. The [water dispenser comparison](/hub/hot-water/water-dispenser) shows which of the twelve amazon.co.uk listings include filtration. Check your local hardness and the exact cartridge claim rather than treating every product marked filtered as the same. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Hard water is local, not a national map

Hardness comes mainly from dissolved calcium and magnesium. The Drinking Water Inspectorate says your water company is the right source, because a national map hides variation between supplies. Hardness is often reported as mg/l CaCO3. The DWI notes that the World Health Organization associates around 200 mg/l and above with a greater tendency to form scale. There is no UK drinking-water limit for hardness. It is a maintenance issue for heaters, not evidence that tap water is unsafe. If your kettle scales quickly, assume a hot-water dispenser will need attention unless the maker gives evidence for your supply and model. Ask the water company for the current figure. Whole-house ion exchange is a different job, and the DWI advises an unsoftened drinking outlet where the whole supply is treated. A countertop cartridge is not that treatment unless the maker says so.

Which dispensers include a cartridge

The Lumi and Aurora include Evolve+ filtration. The Lumi lists one 30-day cartridge. Perfect Pour states dual Evolve+ filtration, while its title also mentions six filters, so check the box. Lumi chills, Aurora heats and chills, and Perfect Pour is a non-electric tank. The BRITA Flow includes one MAXTRA PRO and lists 150 litres or four weeks. BRITA says change it at least every four weeks, and that harder water can shorten that life. The Philips lists three Taste+ cartridges at 100 litres or one month each. It does not heat. Its upper rating is 38°C. CASO claims a filter on the Hot 6 without a life in this comparison data. Waterdrop claims an eight-stage and UV system. Those are listing claims, not proof of sterile water or full hardness removal. The VKJ142’s permanent limescale filter is not a replacement cartridge and does not cancel descaling. Filtration is not stated for the VKJ318. The pumps and VIDETOL jugs do not reduce scale. If you want filtration rather than heat, use the water dispenser buying guide.

What the cartridge does not do

A filter claim is not zero limescale. Media differ for taste, chlorine, particles or some hardness ions. BRITA’s comparison of Limescale Expert with Pure Performance is not a lab result for this Flow ASIN. The Flow display says MAXTRA PRO, not Limescale Expert. A non-electric tank has no element to scale, and the cartridge still expires. Both HotCups, CASO, Aurora and Waterdrop can still scale on hot surfaces. Breville advises descaling more often as hardness rises, and about monthly in very hard water. Follow the booklet for that exact model. A short cup can be scale, a low setting or a badly seated cartridge. The how to use a water dispenser page separates those checks. Waterdrop’s UV wording is a manufacturer claim, not proof of sterile water.

Softened water, drinking taps and formula

If the whole house is softened by ion exchange, keep an unsoftened drinking outlet, as the DWI advises. The NHS says not to use artificially softened water for powdered formula. Use fresh cold tap water, boil it, and make the feed while it is still at least 70°C. CASO’s 37°C button and Waterdrop’s formula preset do not meet that method. Previously boiled water should not be reused for the feed. For ordinary drinks, choose a cartridge you can buy again, and still descale every heater for your local hardness. Filtered, softened and sterile are three different claims. A sensible purchase is one whose cartridge and descaling routine you can keep up.

Common questions

How do I find my local water hardness?
Ask your water company for the figure for your actual supply, usually reported in mg/l as CaCO3 or another hardness unit. A regional map is only a broad guide. Your kettle’s rate of scale build-up also shows how urgently a heated dispenser is likely to need descaling.
Will a BRITA Flow stop limescale in my kettle?
Do not assume it will stop all scale. The Flow includes a MAXTRA PRO cartridge with a listed 150 litres or four weeks, and harder water may shorten that interval. Cartridge performance depends on the exact version, water hardness and use. The listing does not prove zero kettle scale.
Does the Breville permanent filter mean no descaling?
No. The VKJ142 listing claims a permanent limescale filter, but Breville still advises descaling HotCups more often in harder water and about monthly in very hard areas. Follow the exact model manual and your local hardness rather than treating permanent as maintenance-free.
Does a filter cartridge sterilise water?
No such conclusion is supported here. Cartridges may target taste, particles or some scale, while Waterdrop separately claims UV treatment. Neither wording proves sterile output. That claim is not a lab result. Follow your water company’s drinking-water advice, including any notice about the supply.
Can I use artificially softened water for infant formula?
NHS guidance says not to use artificially softened water. Use fresh cold tap water, boil it, and make the feed while the water is still at least 70°C. Do not substitute a 37°C or formula-labelled dispenser preset. Previously boiled water is also ruled out.
How often should I change a cartridge in hard water?
Follow the cartridge maker’s limit and shorten it when the guidance requires. BRITA says MAXTRA PRO should be changed at least every four weeks and that harder water or greater use can reduce its life. Other cartridge families have their own instructions, so do not transfer BRITA’s interval to them.
