Gas boiler installation

Updated: 17.10.2026

Gas boiler installation in a UK home reaches a legal line at the appliance. You can collect quotes, confirm mains gas or LPG, and arrange water pipes and radiators within the limit the Health and Safety Executive sets. You cannot treat an amazon.co.uk line that says “easy to install” as permission to connect the gas. Peter F., DIY & tools editor, set this out on 15 October 2026 from HSE, Gas Safe Register, and the bullets in our [gas boiler comparison](/hub/hot-water/gas-boiler). We did not install a boiler. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you may do before the engineer arrives

Start with three quotes from engineers whose ID cards cover the appliance and the gas you have. Say whether the house is on mains gas or LPG, how many bathrooms run at once, and whether a cylinder or a loft tank is staying. That brief is what the buying guide asks you to take to a survey. HSE allows a person who is not Gas Safe registered to install water pipes and radiators. The appliance, and the final connection, are for the registered engineer, who must not sign off unregistered gas work. Both the unregistered person and the engineer who signs that work off can face prosecution. A correct fuel match, covered on the LPG or natural gas boiler page, still does not make the connection DIY.

How to check the engineer

Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card before the tools come out. Check the photograph, the business name, and the expiry date, then the work categories. A card for a domestic natural-gas boiler is not automatically a card for an LPG appliance. Gas Safe Register tells you to match the card to the appliance and the gas, and gives 0800 408 5500 to confirm a registration. If the job is an indoor flued water heater in this set, say so before the visit. If the card does not show the category, stop. An expired card is a reason to book someone else. Write the registration number down while the card is in your hand.

What a finished install should leave you

A new or replacement boiler is notifiable building work. GOV.UK lists Gas Safe Register as a competent-person scheme, so the engineer can notify the installation through that scheme. Ask for proof it has been sent before you pay the balance. Leave with the user manual and a commissioning record. For a mainstream boiler that record is often the Benchmark logbook. In England, Boiler Plus has applied since April 2018: at least 92% ErP, time and temperature controls, and one extra measure on a combi, with no opt-out. An A+ cell on an Amazon water heater is not that document. Why those listings are a different purchase is on the best gas boiler page.

Landlords, portable heaters, and alarms

In England, Wales, and Scotland, regulation 36 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 requires a gas safety check at least every 12 months on appliances and flues the landlord provides. The check can be done in the two months before the due date without moving the expiry. HSE includes portable appliances the landlord provides,. A Gas Safe registered engineer has to do it or check it. Northern Ireland runs a separate regime. From 1 October 2022, relevant landlords in England must fit a carbon monoxide alarm where living accommodation has a fixed combustion appliance other than a gas cooker. A portable shower in a field is not that appliance.

The indoor listings in this set

The Gasland BG300NG and BG264 bullets require professional installation. Both name a 110 mm flue, and both list screws as what is included. That 110 mm figure is the seller’s size for those water heaters. The GS318NG recommends a licensed installer and lists a 220–240 V cable, without a flue diameter. Budget the flue and the engineer before you treat £178.49 or £249.99 as the whole cost. A review that calls installation easy does not change the HSE line. If you smell gas, or you suspect carbon monoxide, stop using the appliance. In Great Britain call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. If anyone feels unwell, leave and call the emergency services.

Common questions

Can I install a gas boiler myself?
Connecting or commissioning a gas appliance is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. HSE allows an unregistered person to install pipes and radiators, not the final connection. That engineer must not sign off unregistered gas work. An easy-install line is not a licence.
Can I do the pipes and radiators, then get the boiler connected?
You can arrange pipes and radiators, then have a registered engineer connect and commission the appliance. Agree that split in the quote so nobody is asked to certify gas work they did not do.
What should I check on a Gas Safe ID card?
Check the photograph, the trading name, the expiry date, and the categories for the appliance and the gas. Gas Safe Register gives 0800 408 5500 to confirm a registration. A mains-gas card does not, by itself, show LPG competence.
What paperwork should be left after a new boiler?
Ask for the manual, a commissioning record such as the Benchmark logbook, and proof of notification through the Gas Safe scheme. In England, Boiler Plus has required at least 92% ErP since April 2018, plus controls and one extra measure on a combi.
Do landlords need a check on a portable gas heater they provide?
In England, Wales, and Scotland, regulation 36 requires a gas safety check at least every 12 months, and HSE includes portable appliances the landlord provides. The England alarm rule from 1 October 2022 is for a fixed combustion appliance other than a gas cooker.
What should I do if I smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide?
Stop using the appliance and do not remake a joint. In Great Britain call 0800 111 999. If anyone feels unwell, leave and call the emergency services. Wait for a Gas Safe engineer before you turn it back on. Northern Ireland uses your supplier’s number.
