Seed bombs in pots

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a balcony, a window box, or one pot by the door, and the seed bomb you are holding may never mention a container. Seed bombs in pots work when the listing says so, the compost can drain, the light matches the packet, and the height field fits the space. In this amazon.co.uk set those fields run from 12 cm to 1 m. A box that cannot take a metre of stem should not get the bag that prints 1 m. Prices and the twelve listings are on the [seed bomb comparison](/hub/herb-seeds/seed-bomb). Peter F. used those listing fields, with no lab sowing. Which seed bombs mention pots

Seedball's tins at about £16.49 say pots and window boxes, with at least 10 cm between balls, a 40 cm height field and seven named plants. Bea Garden Uk's bee balls at about £2.25 say balcony planters and a 70 cm field. Species are not named, and the file is 5.0 from one rating with no review text. Beebombs' single bag at about £9.99 says planters and pots, full sun and 100 cm. Several UK reviews describe compost and regular water. Bloombugs and the shady mix do not mention pots. Do not promote them into container packs because another brand allows pots. Blossombs says a balcony or a vacant plot. Use the balcony only if it is yours.

Compost, drainage and spacing

Use a pot with holes and peat-free multipurpose compost, the usual container medium the RHS describes. Do not compact it into a brick. Sit the balls on the surface. Water so the compost wets through without washing the ball into a corner. A saucer that stays full for days is not drainage, and a balcony still has to carry the wet weight. Seedball prints at least 10 cm between balls. That gap is for those tins. It is not printed on Bloombugs or Beebombs, so do not apply another brand's rate to a hessian bag. If the pot is much smaller than the 2 m² on the Beebombs bag, do not empty the whole bag into it.

Height and light on a balcony

Read the height field before you buy for a railing. Pretty Wild's bee balls print 12 cm, Seedball prints 40 cm, both Bea packs print 70 cm, the Beebombs single bag prints 100 cm, and the shady mix prints 1 m. Bloombugs prints 15 cm and does not mention pots, so the short field is not a reason to ignore the missing line. These are listing fields, not heights we measured. A low window box is a poor match for a 1 m field. Packs that state light mostly say full sun. The shady mix is the only partial-shade to shade product, and it does not confirm pots. A north-facing box is a poor home for the sunny Beebombs bag. Sow a pot in spring or early autumn, not into a frozen trough because another listing said any time of year.

Water, and packs to skip in a small box

Pots dry faster than a bed. Water so the surface does not dust off while seedlings establish, then let the pot drain. Beebombs reviews that report pot growth also mention regular water. Water is not a guarantee. Skip the 100 cm and 1 m bags if the railing cannot take that height. Skip Bloombugs, the shady mix and the festive pouch when the bullets never say pot. Skip both Bea packs when you need named plants. If the only space is a verge, stop. That limit is on the native wildflower seed bombs page.

Common questions

Can seed bombs grow in a pot or window box?
Yes, when the listing says pots, planters or window boxes, and you use drained peat-free compost in the light it states. Seedball, both Bea Garden Uk packs and the single Beebombs bag say that. Bloombugs and the shady mix do not. A review that mentions a pot is not a bullet. Blossombs names a balcony and a vacant plot. Use only the balcony you occupy.
What compost and drainage does a pot need?
Holes, peat-free multipurpose compost, not compacted, watered through and then allowed to drain. That is the usual RHS container approach. A saucer may catch drips. It should not leave the compost saturated. Check that the balcony can carry wet compost, and that the building allows the pots.
How far apart should Seedball's balls sit?
At least 10 cm, on soil or compost, which is what those tins print. A narrow box may take only a few balls. Do not copy a brand note from another tin, or a one-bomb craft recipe, onto Beebombs or Bloombugs. Those figures are not on their listings. If the pot is much smaller than the claimed 2 m², do not empty the whole Beebombs bag into it.
Will a shady balcony suit the full-sun packs?
No. Full-sun packs, including the Beebombs single bag and Seedball, are the wrong light if the box never gets a proper sunny spell. The shady mix is the only partial-shade to shade listing, and it does not confirm pots. Partial shade on the about £2.99 bombs is printed, and the species are not. Do not put a full-sun bag in a dark well and hope the clay compensates.
What place is wrong even if the listing says plot?
A vacant plot you do not occupy, a verge, or a pavement. Blossombs pairs a balcony with a vacant plot. The balcony can be a container if it is yours. The plot is not permission. Plantlife does not want shop seed in nearby wild habitats. If the only outdoor space is public, ask before you sow. Do not use a pot page as a reason to throw balls over the railing.
