Fly screen for outward opening windows

Updated: October 2026

Your uPVC casement swings into the garden, and a sheet stuck drum-tight across the inside meets that sash on the way back to the lock. A fly screen for outward opening windows has to leave the path clear: a peel-back flap, Open/Close as the tesa option, or a framed screen that is a different product. The stick-and-trim order is on [how to fit a tesa fly screen](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/tesa-fly-screen/sub/tesa-fly-screen-how-to-fit). Why the picture does not match the window

A review of the 150 cm x 180 cm white sheet asks how an outward sash would close with the mesh fixed inside. The picture is an inward window. The sash has to pass through the opening, so a sealed sheet is a lid. Reviews of the 110 cm anthracite sheet, the white three-pack, and the tall Comfort sheet say the mesh blocks the sash or must be peeled back. If you stay with a sheet, size is on the buying guide.

A flap to the handle

Reviewers who make a sheet work peel a flap back to the handle, move the sash, and press the mesh on again. On the tall Comfort sheet, 120 cm x 240 cm at £9.51, some reviews describe that habit, and one says a fixed mesh stops the window being used. Close and lock the window with the flap in place before you trust it. If the lock will not throw, the flap is not enough.

When Open/Close is the tesa option

Open/Close Premium is sold to roll aside so you can open the window and close the screen again. It is 130 cm x 150 cm, £23.99, 4.3 out of 5 from 1,057 reviews. The title says anthracite and the colour field says Black. It is still hook-and-loop mesh, not a cassette. Rolling the mesh aside can clear more of a UK casement than a small flap. If the rolled mesh or the tape still sits in the closing path, the window will not lock. The best value sheet, the white Standard at £7.20, is the better spend when you open the window only now and then and a flap really does clear the lock.

When to stop and buy a different screen

Premier Screens argues that a screen for an outward casement has to sit on the fixed frame so the sash can still swing. That is a framed or hinged screen. Streme sells framed, roller, and made-to-measure screens. Use that class when a peel-back sheet will not let you lock the window. Best tesa Insect Stop still applies if a flap genuinely works.

Escape windows

A flap you remember to peel is not an unobstructed escape opening. In England, Approved Document B volume 1, paragraph 2.10, expects a clear opening of at least 0.33 m² and at least 450 mm by 450 mm, with the bottom no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. The sash has to stay open without being held. If you cannot clear the screen quickly, do not fit it on that window.

When a sheet is still worth trying

If a flap lets you close and lock the casement, the white Standard sheet at £7.20 is the sensible spend for occasional use. If you open that window every day, Open/Close at £23.99 is the tesa listing aimed at rolling the mesh aside, and you still have to test the lock. If neither clears the sash, stop buying adhesive mesh for that window.

Common questions

Can I use a tesa sheet if my window opens outwards?
Only as a peel-back compromise, and only if the sash still closes and locks. A drum-tight sheet across the inside blocks an outward casement. Reviews on the 110 cm anthracite sheet, the 150 cm white sheet, the white three-pack, and the tall Comfort sheet describe that block or a flap to the handle. The packet picture is often an inward-opening window.
Will I still be able to lock the window?
Only if you test it. Close the sash with the flap or the rolled mesh where you will leave it, and turn the lock. Reviews say a fixed mesh stops the window being used. If the handle hits the tape, move the flap. If the lock will not throw, take the sheet off.
Is Open/Close better for a UK casement?
It is the tesa listing aimed at opening and closing the screen, at £23.99 for 130 cm x 150 cm. Rolling the mesh aside can clear more than a small flap. It is still adhesive mesh, not a hinged frame. If you open the window only now and then and a flap lets you lock it, the £7.20 Standard sheet is the more sensible spend.
Should I buy a roller or a framed screen instead?
Yes, when the casement cannot close with a tesa sheet in place, or when you want a screen on the fixed frame that swings or retracts with the window. Premier Screens and Streme describe that class. This comparison does not price those products. A tilt-and-turn sash, or a casement where a flap really clears the lock, can still use hook-and-loop mesh.
Does this block an escape window?
It can, if the mesh stays across the opening or you cannot clear it quickly. In England, Approved Document B expects a clear opening of at least 0.33 m² and at least 450 mm by 450 mm, with the bottom no more than 1,100 mm above the floor, and the sash must stay open without being held. A peel-back habit is not that opening. These listings are not approved as escape windows.
