Magnetic or framed fly screen door: curtain or kit

Updated: October 2026

You have either watched a magnetic curtain belly in the wind, or you are looking at the Windhager Rhino and wondering why it costs several times a mesh at about £8. A magnetic or framed fly screen door is not a quality ladder with one winner at the top. They are different objects. The curtain is a taped seam you walk through. The Rhino is an aluminium kit you build and screw. This page says when each one is the better buy in this amazon.co.uk set. The full table is the [screen door comparison](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/screen-door). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What each one actually is

The magnetic curtains here are nylon or polyester mesh with a centre split, about £7.99 to £16.99. You fix them with hook-and-loop, and some kits add pins for timber. People and dogs are meant to push through, and the magnets are supposed to fall shut. Nothing in those listings is a hinge or a frame you cut to the opening. Taking one down in September, and not drilling uPVC, is the point. The wider shortlist of curtains is the best magnetic screen door page. The Windhager Rhino, ASIN B01CYIWNQ4, model 03758, is about £63.64 with 3.8 from 735 reviews. The amazon.co.uk file describes a charcoal aluminium kit, fibreglass mesh, self-closing hinges, and a brush, at 2.04 kg. Assembly is required. That file does not print a width and height. Windhager's sheet for 03758 does: a 100 × 210 cm supply, maximum clearance 95 cm wide and 206 cm high, screws, and not for a door with a rain guard. Those dimensions are Windhager's, not an Amazon size row. The mesh bullet says 1.26 × 1.44 mm, which the curtains do not state. That is a specification, not a lab test we ran.

When the magnetic curtain is enough

Choose a curtain for a single sheltered opening you want usable this weekend, without drilling. At about £7.99 to £16.99 you can take it down if the adhesive fails. Premier Env describes magnetic screens for hands-full domestic traffic. The same firm steers readers toward hinged screens and suggests a magnetic curtain rarely lasts a season on a busy door. That is a seller's argument, not a durability test, and we are not repeating unsourced year-ranges from other shop tables. The limits are already in this set. Homefair Blinds says wind pushes the centre split apart. EGNBU reviewers describe tape that peeled and a curtain that fell in the heat. A stay-open buckle, on the Cascovll, parks the mesh and also leaves a gap. Pets that already come and go are fine. A cat you need to keep in is not this product. An 80 cm curtain on a 90 cm frame fails for a boring reason. Moving to aluminium does not remove the tape measure. If the curtain is simply the wrong width, exchange it. If the width is right and sun or wind still beats the tape, the frame is the next conversation.

When the aluminium frame is the point

Choose the Rhino when you want a leaf that swings and a brush at the edge, so the close does not depend on two strips of mesh. Windhager's sheet says the kit is screwed, and the Amazon file says assembly is required. Reviews include unclear instructions and plastic fittings that broke. Others prefer the finished door to magnetic nets that tore. The 3.8 from 735 is a mixed file. It is not proof the product is useless, and it is not proof the build is easy. The maximum opening on Windhager's sheet is 95 × 206 cm. A larger hole is the wrong kit, even though Amazon left the size blank. A rain guard is an explicit exclusion. Screws mean a suitable surround, not a pin in uPVC. If you are not confident drilling, or the frame is listed, a fitter should do it. Tape steps do not transfer. They live on the how to fit a magnetic fly screen page. The Rhino is not sold here as a cat lock. A hinged mesh door can be harder to push than a magnetic seam. That is not a zip barrier with kitten reviews. Do not buy it to solve an escape that needs a containment screen.

One recommendation with a condition

For a no-drill summer walk-through on one sheltered door, buy a magnetic curtain and match the width. For a rigid close, buy the Rhino only if you can screw a frame together, the clear opening is within 95 × 206 cm on Windhager's sheet, and the door has no rain guard. If any one of those is missing, the kit is the wrong purchase even though it is the only aluminium door here. The review counts describe different products. An about £63.64 price and a 9,000-review curtain are not on one scale. Shop tables that award one to three years against five to ten without a method are not evidence. Figures are from the amazon.co.uk listings and Windhager's 03758 sheet, read on 20 October 2026. We did not assemble a Rhino in a lab.

Common questions

When is the curtain the better buy?
When you want a walk-through this weekend, you will not drill, and the door is a single opening out of the worst of the wind. Curtains in this set are about £7.99 to £16.99. They are the wrong buy if the tape has already failed in the sun, if you need a rigid leaf, or if a cat must stay on one side.
When is the Rhino the better buy?
When you want hinges and a brush seal, you can saw and screw, the opening is within the 95 × 206 cm maximum on Windhager's sheet, and there is no rain guard. It is about £63.64 with 3.8 from 735 reviews. It is the wrong buy if you wanted a no-drill curtain or a size the Amazon file never printed and the sheet excludes.
Do I have to drill for the Rhino?
Yes. Windhager's sheet for model 03758 specifies screws, and the Amazon file says assembly is required. That is a different job from hook-and-loop tape. If you cannot or must not drill the frame, stay with a curtain or hire the fitting.
What is the Rhino's maximum opening?
Windhager's sheet says the supplied size is 100 × 210 cm and the maximum clearance is 95 cm wide by 206 cm high. The amazon.co.uk capture we used does not print that size. Do not treat a blank Amazon size row as permission to cover a wider patio.
Will a magnetic screen cope with wind?
Homefair Blinds says the centre split leaks air and that wind pushes the panels apart. A sheltered kitchen door is a fair job. An exposed patio is where reviewers and that shop page both expect the seam to open. A stay-open buckle makes that worse if you leave it clipped.
Can I fit the Rhino if the door has a rain bar?
Windhager says the 03758 kit is not for doors with a rain guard. That is a reason to skip this ASIN, not a reason to force the head of the frame. A different product, or a made-to-measure screen from a specialist, is the honest next step.
