What a top pick can mean in this set

Best here is the pack whose pot, count and price fit the row. Carbeth Rotundifolia comes in 3 L pots, fives, tens or fifteens, stated 60–80 cm, with 600 mm on the listing. Easy Plants Novita is a 17 cm pot, one plant at £13.99 or two at £24.99, 60–70 cm including the pot, with no spacing and no star line. The top pick is ten plants at £70.99 when your count is near ten at 600 mm. The best value is fifteen at £100.99, about £6.73 a plant, only if you will use about fifteen. Nothing here is a screen this summer. A reviewer said the Carbeth height includes the pot. At least 90 cm a year is the seller's claim. A trade rule of thumb is nearer 30–60 cm a year.

The Rotundifolia runs

Five plants, B0DNWWMZKT, are £37.99, about £7.60 each in a 3 L pot. Four gaps of 0.6 m is 2.4 m between the ends. Buy that for a short return. Ten plants, B0DNWW7V3Y, are £70.99, about £7.10 each. Nine gaps of 0.6 m is 5.4 m, your arithmetic, not a length Carbeth prints. That is the top pick on soil that drains and is not shallow chalk. Fifteen plants, B0DNWW218P, are £100.99, about £6.73 each, and 8.4 m between the ends on the same 600 mm assumption. That is the best value only when the tape agrees. The reviews do not improve as the box gets bigger. All three ASINs show 4.6 from the same 3 texts.

The Novita pots

The single Novita, B0BCXB2M4V, is £13.99 in a 17 cm pot. Buy it to see whether the cultivar settles, especially in deeper shade. The RHS rates Novita H6 and lists full shade as well as sun. The Easy Plants page only says full sun, and it has no spacing and no Amazon rating. One pot is not a hedge. The pair, B0BCX7KJPW, is £24.99, about £12.50 each, for two positions, not a 5 m run. At this money you are close to five Carbeth 3 L plants at £37.99. Unless you need the shade note, the 3 L pack is the stronger start.

Who should buy neither

Leave all five on poorer, shallow chalk. The RHS says cherry laurel may yellow there. Portuguese laurel is the plant that thrives on that chalk: cherry laurel or Portuguese laurel. Leave them if you need a tall screen this summer. Arrival height is about 60–80 cm. Leave them, or read first, if a dog chews cuttings or a child treats the berries as fruit. Both cultivars are Prunus laurocerasus. What to do is on is cherry laurel poisonous?. Leave them if you wanted a low edging that stays under a metre without work. Unpruned cherry laurel is 4–8 m on the RHS page. Once you choose a pack, the hole and the first water are on how to plant a cherry laurel hedge.

Common questions

Which listing do I buy if I only want to try one plant?
The single Easy Plants Novita at £13.99, in a 17 cm pot, stated 60–70 cm including the pot. There is no star rating on the listing, and no spacing. It is a trial of the cultivar, particularly where the RHS shade note matters, not the start of a hedge. If the trial is really five plants to see, the Carbeth five-pack at £37.99 is the 3 L version of the same idea.
Which pack starts a real hedge?
A Rotundifolia run in 3 L pots, sized to the count you measured. The top pick in this set is the ten-plant pack at £70.99 when that count is about ten at 600 mm. Five plants suit a short row of roughly 2.4 m between the ends. Fifteen suit a longer run and cost £100.99. None of them is a screen at the height printed on the box.
Is the 15-plant pack better value?
It is the lowest price per plant in the set, about £6.73, against about £7.10 for ten and about £7.60 for five, all in 3 L pots. That is better value only if you will plant about fifteen. The review texts do not get better as the pack grows. If the row is shorter, you have paid for pots you do not need.
Is 4.6 from 3 reviews enough?
It is enough to read, and not enough to treat as a test. The same three UK texts appear on the 5-, 10- and 15-plant listings. They mention healthy plants, a height that includes the pot, uneven size, and a replacement. The Novita pots have no review line on the listing. If you need a thicker review history, this set does not have it.
Is Novita hardier than Rotundifolia on the RHS scale?
The RHS rates Novita H6 and lists full shade to full sun. The species page for cherry laurel is H5. The Rotundifolia page we used did not show a separate hardiness code, so this page does not invent one. H6 is not a promise of faster screening, and it does not make the 17 cm pot a substitute for a 3 L hedge pack.
