Texture roller ceiling repair

Updated: October 2026

A smooth filler patch is flashing in a stippled or Artex-style ceiling, and you want a texture roller to blend it. The roller can texture new filler or new compound. It does not give you permission to sand the old coating, and it may still miss the pattern. This texture roller ceiling repair page is that one job. Review notes come from our [texture roller comparison](/hub/heating/texture-roller). The Products Compared editorial team updated this page in October 2026 from listings captured on 15 October 2026. Paint over, or patch

An intact textured ceiling and a damaged one are different decisions. North Tyneside Council says you can paint intact Artex, you should not sand or scrape it, and a damp cloth is the cleaning method. Islington Council says do not drill, sand, or scrape textured coatings. If you only dislike the colour, you are colouring a pattern that already exists. A patch is the other job. New filler dries smooth, and a roller can work only in that new material.

Do not sand the old texture

Do not sand, scrape, grind, chip, or drill through an old textured coating so a roller can grip. HSE sheet a28, as used here, says you do not sand or scrape through textured coatings. Work on asbestos insulating board is licensed. Choice Housing, for homes in Northern Ireland, says assume a pre-2000 textured coating contains asbestos until you know. That is an assumption, not a finding about your ceiling. Artex is a brand name for several textures. If the coating is crumbling or has to come off, stop. This page does not describe a removal method.

What a roller did in UK reviews

UK reviews do not agree. On the VOBOR 6 inch roller, about £14.69 and 4.1 from 89 ratings, thick coatings left a ceiling texture and thin paint or an Artex patch was rubbed flat. A UK reviewer tried a putty roller and the 6 inch roller and found both too flat. Tabanzhe’s 10 cm sleeves, about £4.79, appear on a small emulsion ceiling patch. A sanded patch in a review is not a method for the old coating. The shortlist is on best texture roller.

When a brush or a professional takes over

The Artex Repair Texture sheet says brush the compound on, then stipple by dabbing a texture brush and turning it. Practise on sealed plasterboard, keep the room above 5°C, and paint with emulsion when the repair is dry. A roller is a weak stand-in when the surrounding pattern was made with a brush. DIY Doctor separates bark, which uses a bark roller, from stipple, which uses a brush. Ordinary rolling steps are on how to use a texture roller. Pile for a sound ceiling you are only painting is in the texture roller buying guide.

Common questions

Can I sand the peaks off before I roll?
No. North Tyneside and Islington say not to sand or scrape textured coatings. The HSE line used here is the same: do not sand or scrape through them. Choice Housing says assume a pre-2000 coating contains asbestos until you know, and do not sand, grind, chip, or drill without consent. A damp cloth is the cleaning step those council pages describe for intact coatings. Texture you add belongs on new filler or new compound.
Is every textured ceiling Artex, and does Artex always contain asbestos?
No. Artex is a brand name that gets used for stipple and other ceiling textures. Choice Housing’s Northern Ireland guide says assume a pre-2000 textured coating contains asbestos until you know. That is not a finding that every Artex ceiling contains asbestos, and it is not a finding that a newer coating is clear. If you do not know the age or the board behind it, you still do not sand it.
Will a sponge sleeve match a stipple patch?
Sometimes people get a blend, and sometimes the patch goes flat. Tabanzhe reviews include a small ceiling patch in ordinary emulsion, on a sleeve about 10 cm long. VOBOR reviews include both ceiling texture and Artex patches that lost their pattern. One JNAWA reviewer preferred a pasting brush. A 10 cm sponge has no claim on bark, swirl, and stipple together. Try the mark in new filler on a board before you commit the ceiling.
When is a stipple brush the better tool?
When the surrounding pattern is a stipple. The Artex repair sheet says dab a texture brush and turn it, after brushing the compound on, and practise on sealed plasterboard with the room above 5°C. One JNAWA reviewer preferred a pasting brush for the same reason. A roller remains plausible for a light overall texture in new filler. It is the wrong hope when you need that turned dab. The ceiling itself is a poor place to discover the difference.
What if the coating is already crumbling?
Stop. A crumbling coating, a coating on insulating board, or a coating that has to be removed is not a roller job. Sheet a28, as used here, treats sanding and scraping through textured coatings as the thing you avoid, and work on asbestos insulating board as licensed. This page will not give a removal method. Get advice before anyone disturbs it. Painting a sound intact texture is the council path, and crumbling texture is not intact.
