Do radiator covers block heat?

Updated: 22 October 2026

The room feels slower to warm, or the radiator stays hot while the air by the sofa stays chilly. B&Q and Plumbworld publish the same pattern. A radiator cover does not improve efficiency. It changes how air moves, and where the TRV senses temperature. This page explains convection and how to avoid trapping the valve head. Ventilated models are in the [radiator cover comparison](/hub/heating/radiator-cover). Peter F. checked the listings and public UK sources. There was no lab test, and there is no single heat-loss percentage. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Convection, and why a cover changes it

A panel radiator on a UK wet system heats a room mainly by convection: air passes over the fins, rises, and pulls cooler air in at the bottom, with some radiant warmth near the metal. A shelf and a slatted front can still work if cool air enters below, warm air leaves through the grille and the top gap, and nothing blocks that flow. A solid panel, or slats packed with dust, behaves more like a blanket. There is no fixed heat-loss percentage for these MDF cabinets. It depends on open area, dust, furniture, and whether the system was balanced before the cover. B&Q and Frenger describe that trade-off without one figure for every cabinet. An obstructed cover is a bad idea for efficiency. That is a caution, not a ban on every slatted cabinet.

What you notice in the room

A cabinet can warm the air trapped inside faster than the room beyond the slats. A warm top shelf is normal, and it is not a cool-touch surface. Dust narrows the open area, so vacuum the slats after decorating. A sofa flush against the grille defeats the ventilation, which is the pattern B&Q describes. Leave a gap so air can enter and leave. Slatted Vida, GHC and Mondeer fronts are ventilated designs, not a certificate. A traditional cross can still vent if it stays clean. The Mondeer is the shallower card here, 17.5 cm, so a projecting TRV head is more likely to foul it than a 19 cm Vida.

TRVs and trapped air

A thermostatic radiator valve regulates flow from the air near the head. If the head sits inside the cover, it can read the warm pocket and close while the room is still cold. Plumbworld’s rule is to keep the TRV outside the cabinet, or use a remote sensor that suits the pipes. A smart head follows the same physics. Part L in England expects thermostatic control in habitable rooms on new systems and many boiler replacements. A cover is not that control. Moving a valve, or adapting a gas appliance, is a job for a qualified engineer. Do not drill a valve body.

What to do before you blame the cabinet

Plan the head position with how to measure for a radiator cover before you add foil. Foil can cut heat lost into some solid walls. It does not fix a blocked grille or a TRV in the warm pocket. Even radiators matter more than the cabinet brand. If the room was cold before the cover, look at radiator size, lockshield balance or insulation. A cover hides the panel. It rarely cures an undersized emitter.

Choosing a ventilated cabinet

Filter by size first, then by front. A 78 cm cabinet suits a small hall. A 152 cm cabinet matches a large panel. Adjustable width helps awkward centres. It does not change the physics, only the fit. None of these twelve listings is a certified low-surface-temperature school cover. After a careful install the room should reach temperature on a similar timeline to before, allowing for furniture and where the TRV sits. A lasting cold spot means the controls, or a professional, not a second cover.

Common questions

Will a cover stop my room heating?
It can slow the warm-up you feel, or reduce output, if airflow is poor, the slats are blocked, or the TRV misreads the temperature. A slatted cabinet with clearance often behaves acceptably when the job is cosmetic. It will not add heat to an undersized radiator. This page does not quote one heat-loss percentage for every MDF cabinet.
Should the TRV head stay outside?
Usually yes, or use a remote-sensor TRV designed for that layout. An enclosed head often shuts the radiator early, so the cabinet feels hot and the room stays cool. Measure the head before you order. A cover does not replace thermostatic room control under Part L in England.
Do slats help enough?
They help more than a solid panel when they are clean and unobstructed. They are not a performance guarantee. Open area, dust and a sofa hard against the grille decide more than whether the slats run vertically or horizontally.
Is the top shelf hot?
It can warm while the heating runs. Treat it as potentially hot to touch. These domestic MDF cabinets are not certified low-surface-temperature covers for schools or care buildings. Supervise children, and do not use the shelf as a seat.
Should I use radiator foil as well?
Foil may reduce heat lost into the wall in some solid-wall setups. It does not fix a TRV trapped in warm air, and it does not fix a blocked grille. Balance the radiators, and keep the convection path clear, before you add foil behind a cover.
Does a sofa blocking the cover matter?
Yes. Blocking the front stops the convection path, the same way a solid panel does. Leave a gap so cool air can enter at the bottom and warm air can leave through the slats. The exact gap depends on the room.
