Assemble an MDF radiator cover

Updated: 22 October 2026

Reviews on the same amazon.co.uk cabinet say both ten minutes and two hours. That spread is normal. The listing praised for value is also criticised for short screws and for wobble until the brackets bite. This page is the unboxing and the build for the set in the [radiator cover comparison](/hub/heating/radiator-cover). Measuring stays on [how to measure for a radiator cover](/hub/heating/radiator-cover/sub/radiator-cover-how-to-measure). Peter F. checked the listings and public UK sources. There was no lab test. Before you start

Clear floor space longer than the finished width. A 152 cm cabinet needs room to lay the back flat. Count every board, dowel, screw pack, slat and bracket before you pierce a hole. Missing hardware is easier to sort before the carcass is tight. Photograph chips, splits and mis-drilled holes on arrival. If a side is clearly wrong, stop. Forcing a dowel widens the hole. Confirm the cabinet still matches your measure. Choosing the SKU is on the radiator cover buying guide.

Tools and time

Use a cross-head screwdriver, a drill only on low torque, a rubber mallet for the dowels, and a second person for a large unit. The Milton at 6.9 kg often takes about an hour once the slats are sorted. The Chelsea 152 cm, 10.5 kg, can run to two hours. The adjustable Chelsea is about 16.7 kg, so plan a two-person lift onto the fixings. Trust a recent comment that names your ASIN, not a pooled easy-build line.

Slats, dowels and screws

Most Vida builds start with sides, top, back and base on dowels and screws. The slats then screw one by one. High torque strips the fibre. Some Milton buyers find the slat screws short. If a screw spins, back it off. A longer screw is only useful if it cannot pierce the face. Otherwise ask for a pack. GHC reviews split between a quick build and feeble dowels, plus a two-piece top with a visible centre join. Treat that top as a light shelf. GHC and FATIVO are floor mount. Feet alone are a weak plan if children lean on them. Do not glue unless the manual says so. Many carcasses square when the back and the brackets tighten, and glue makes a return harder. Sort the slats first, and finish the last turn of each screw by hand.

Wall brackets and wobble

Most listings here are wall mount. Reviewers call the carcass floppy until it is on the brackets. Find studs, or use masonry fixings. Screws into plaster alone pull out once the shelf is loaded. GHC and FATIVO are floor mount and still benefit from a fixing if children lean on the shelf. After fixing, press the top front edge. A little movement can remain. Large racking means retighten, or shim an uneven floor. An unfixed cabinet leant on the wall is when reviewers report forward tilt.

After assembly

Load the shelf with keys and post, not books, and not a child. Vacuum the slats once the heating runs so dust does not narrow the airflow. How that changes the room is on TRVs, heat, and radiator covers. If parts are wrong, or the carcass will not square, return it while the kit is incomplete. Flex that remains is furniture-grade MDF. Keep the spare screws. Slats can loosen after the first heating season.

Common questions

How long does assembly take?
Often one to two hours for a slatted Vida cabinet. Some buyers are quicker on a simpler kit. It takes longer when the holes fight the alignment. A small 78 cm cabinet is commonly about an hour once the slats are sorted. A 152 cm front with dozens of screws can run to two hours.
Do I need two people?
Yes for a 152 cm cabinet and for the adjustable Chelsea, which is about 16.7 kg packed. A solo build is realistic on a 78 cm unit if you are patient. The heavy lift is onto the wall fixings, not only out of the box.
What if the holes are mis-drilled?
Stop, photograph the panel, and ask for a replacement. Forcing a dowel into a bad hole widens it and the carcass will not square. Returns are simpler while the kit is still unbuilt.
Are the screws too short for the slats?
Short slat screws are a recurring review theme, including on some Milton builds. Do not keep driving into stripped MDF. Back the screw off, and use a slightly longer screw only if it cannot pierce the finished face. Otherwise request a replacement pack.
Should I use wood glue?
Only if you are happy to own the joint. Glue on the dowels can help a practised flat-pack build. It also makes a return harder. Skip it unless the manual tells you to glue. Many of these cabinets are meant to square up when the back and the brackets are tightened.
When must I fix the cabinet to the wall?
Before you trust the shelf with a load or with children, on virtually every wall-mount model in this set. Brackets into studs or masonry beat plaster-only screws. Floor-mount feet still need a fixing if someone will lean on the shelf.
