Propane heater for garage

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are in a single garage in midwinter, tools on the bench, and an electric fan heater barely reaches the floor. Search results push 15 kW gas blowers next to living-room cabinets, and the titles all say portable gas heater. This page is the blower class only: a propane heater for garage or workshop use, direct-fired LPG with a fan, for attended work in a ventilated non-living space. It covers the three blowers in the [gas heating comparison](/hub/heating/gas-heating). Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK gas guidance. There was no lab test and no Gas Safe inspection. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a blower does differently

A cabinet radiates at roughly 4.2 kW in a ventilated room. A blower here burns at 7–15 kW and throws hot air. Combustion products stay inside unless you ventilate: door open, you present, nobody sleeping behind a sealed door. The Bimson and the 15 kW DAHTEC need mains for the fan. Keep the cable off the blades. One Bimson review mentions a lead that rubbed the impeller. The DAHTEC 10 kW fan is an included 18 V battery, at about £219.00 with four UK reviews. None of these blowers names an oxygen depletion sensor. Quiet heat for a sofa is the other class, split out in the portable gas heater buying guide.

The three blowers in this comparison

The Bimson Power BP-G15T at about £119.99 is the workshop pick: 7–15 kW, a hose, a regulator, spark ignition, a 13 A plug, and a claim of up to twelve hours on a 13 kg bottle at full output. Reviews are garages and workshops, 4.7 from 24. Overheat protection is named. The fuel field says propane. Skip it if you have no socket. The DAHTEC BGA1401-15-18 at about £84.15 is 15 kW, with piezo ignition, an overheat cut-off and a body of about 5 kg. The spec table does not list a hose, a regulator or a fuel. One verified UK review says the manual did not support a domestic garage. Buy it only if you already have a hose and you will read that manual. The DAHTEC BGA2003-10 at about £219.00 is 10 kW propane with an 18 V 5.2 Ah fan battery, a flame-failure thermocouple, overheat protection and IPX4. The bullets limit it to outdoors or a well-ventilated non-domestic area. Four reviews cannot show reliability. In a small single garage, start on a lower band where the manual allows it.

Ventilation and carbon monoxide

HSE guidance treats ventilation as part of safe use. Open the door, do not seal every vent, and do not run a blower while you sleep or leave. Carbon monoxide is colourless. A direct-fired blower raises the risk if airflow is poor. An alarm in the attached home supplements ventilation. It does not permit a closed door. Keep paint, cardboard and plastic out of the hot airstream. Shut off at the cylinder when you leave. If the manual bans a domestic garage, believe it. The DAHTEC 15 kW reviews show that marketing and the booklet can disagree.

When to buy a cabinet instead

A butane cabinet is for a ventilated living space while you are awake: about 4 kW, a 21 mm bottle, and an oxygen depletion sensor and flame failure named. The NJ-H2 and the Straame foldable fit that. A home bullet does not put a blower in a lounge. Picks are on best portable gas heater. A cabinet in a workshop only suits small, sedentary work with the door open. It will not defrost a windscreen or lift a high ceiling for painting. A cartridge stove is not garage heat. A finished garage used as a gym or office may suit neither without a proper look at ventilation.

Common questions

Is 15 kW too much for a double garage?
It can be, if the space is small and sealed. Start on a lower output where the manual allows it, ventilate generously, and stop if the space overheats or smells rich. Match the kilowatts to the volume and the airflow. The Bimson states 7–15 kW. The DAHTEC 15 kW listing is a single high output.
Do I need a socket as well as a bottle?
For the Bimson and the 15 kW DAHTEC, yes. The fan is electric and the Bimson has a pre-fitted 13 A plug. The 10 kW DAHTEC battery model avoids a fan lead. It still needs gas, and the included 18 V battery needs charging. The bottle is extra on all three.
Can I run a blower with the door shut?
No. Direct-fired heat needs continuous fresh air. A closed door turns a garage into a hazard. HSE guidance treats ventilation as part of safe use. A carbon monoxide alarm in the attached house does not make a sealed garage acceptable.
What if the manual bans domestic garages?
Do not use the appliance in that space. One verified UK review of the DAHTEC 15 kW says the manual withdrew a domestic garage claim that the listing still suggested. Use a detached ventilated workshop only if the manual allows a non-domestic area, or choose a different way to heat.
Battery fan or mains fan in this set?
The Bimson and the 15 kW DAHTEC use a mains fan, so they need a 13 A supply and they run while power stays on. The DAHTEC BGA2003-10 fan is an included 18 V battery, which is easier on a site without a socket. It costs about £219.00 and has four UK reviews.
Is a cabinet heater ever right for a workshop?
Sometimes, for small ventilated bench work where you want quiet radiant heat and you already have butane. A 4.2 kW cabinet will not dry paint across a large volume or cope with a hard cold snap the way a blower can. Use a blower only if the manual and the ventilation allow it.
