How to use a gas heater

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have unpacked a portable cabinet, or screwed a flat-pack together, and the next step is the blue bottle. This page is how to use a gas heater of that cabinet class: first light, a leak check, ventilation and shut-down. Cartridge stoves and garage blowers share two habits, shut off at the bottle and never leak-test with a flame, and their lighting differs. Fuel choice is a separate question. Product rows live in the [gas heating comparison](/hub/heating/gas-heating). Peter F. followed the listing manuals’ sequence and public UK gas guidance. This is not a Gas Safe inspection. Before first light

Read the manual in the box, not an older PDF. NJ-H2 and Straame listings name piezo or push-button ignition, three settings and a 21 mm clip-on for Great Britain butane. In Northern Ireland, check a 35 mm cylinder. NJ-H2 reviews describe an adapter for a Flogas bottle. Fittings are on the butane or propane page. Finish flat-pack assembly before gas. Straame reviews mention leftover screws, misaligned holes and thin metal under a 13 kg bottle. Fit the retainer so the bottle cannot tip the cabinet, and keep the hose off the castors. If the new hose is stiff, soak it in warm water, dry it, and do not force it onto the clip-on. Replace a damaged hose before any gas flows. Do not use propane on these butane-only cabinets. Keep the piezo unused until the leak test is done.

Lighting and leak checks

Connect the hose hand-tight, plus a quarter turn with a spanner only where the manual says so. Brush washing-up liquid in water onto the joints. Open the cylinder valve slowly. Growing bubbles mean a leak: close the valve, ventilate, refit and test again. Do not use a match. Open a window a notch before lighting. HSE guidance says a flueless appliance needs fresh air. A headache or dizziness means stop, shut off the gas and air the room. Light on low and hold the piezo until the flame is stable behind the guard. A long match is only if the manual allows it. If the flame lifts, yellows or smells strongly, shut off at the heater and the cylinder. Keep curtains and toys outside the clearance the manual marks.

During use

Stay in the room, or shut the heater down when you leave. Do not dry clothes on the guard or spray aerosols nearby. The anti-tilt switch only helps on a level floor with the bottle secured. One-bar heat is what NJ-H2 and Straame reviews praise in mild weather. Full 4.2 kW is a cold snap in a ventilated space, not a sealed box room. An unexpected shut-off is a safety event. Do not bypass an oxygen depletion sensor or flame failure. Ventilate, then look for a blocked vent or an empty bottle. Do not move a lit cabinet. Which class you bought is in the portable gas heater buying guide.

Shut-down and storage

Turn the appliance off first, then close the cylinder valve. If the knob feels vague, still close the bottle. Let the metal cool. Folding a Straame is disassembly, not a latch. Coil the hose loosely. Replace it on the Liquid Gas UK schedule for mobile heaters, or sooner if you smell gas or see cracks. Store spare bottles upright, out of living areas. Odours, headaches or repeated failed relights mean stop. A Gas Safe registered engineer is for a fixed installation. Replace the portable unit if the hose or regulator is suspect. This page does not replace the booklet.

Common questions

How do I light the pilot on a cabinet heater?
Many amazon.co.uk cabinets use piezo ignition at the burner, not a standing pilot you leave on all summer. Hold the control on low and press the igniter until the flame steadies. The NJ-H2 and Straame listings name piezo or push-button ignition. See your manual for the exact hold time.
Do I need soapy water on the hose?
Yes, after every new connection and whenever you smell gas. Brush washing-up liquid mixed with water onto the regulator and the hose tails, then open the cylinder valve slowly. Bubbles that grow show a leak. Close the valve and fix it before lighting. Do not hunt for a leak with a match.
How much ventilation does a flueless cabinet need?
Enough continuous fresh air that the room does not feel stuffy. HSE guidance expects you not to block vents and to follow the appliance instructions. Open a window at least a notch before lighting, and increase airflow on a higher setting. Never block the air grilles on the cabinet.
Why must I turn the heater off at the cylinder?
The bottle valve isolates the whole system if a control knob leaks or a hose fails. Turn the appliance control off first, then close the cylinder. That is the surest off when you leave the room or smell gas. An ambiguous switch on the cabinet is not a substitute.
What if the piezo will not spark?
Check the battery if the manual uses one. Many piezo units are mechanical. Inspect for wetness after the leak test. If the spark still fails, contact the seller. Reviews in this set also mention failed ignitors on cartridge units. Use a long match only if your manual allows it.
Can I move the heater with the bottle connected?
Not while it is lit or hot. Shut off at the heater and the cylinder, let it cool, disconnect if the manual requires it, then move. A tip-over switch helps if the cabinet is knocked on a level floor. It is not a reason to drag a live cabinet.
