How to install an infrared panel heater

Updated: 22 October 2026

The easy mistake is to screw a 1,200 W panel where the bracket holes land. That puts the beam on a sofa back, or the face flush to a ceiling the manual will not allow. How to install an infrared panel heater in a UK room is placement first and the plug second. A new circuit, or any bathroom feed, is where you stop. The three rows are in the [1200W infrared panel heater comparison](/hub/heating/1200w-infrared-panel-heater). Peter F. compared amazon.co.uk listings read for 20 October 2026. There was no lab test. Put the beam where you sit

A far-infrared face heats what it can see. The government infrared heating report found comfort falling away once people left the beam, so stand in the chair you use and put the heater on that line. A panel behind a sofa warms the upholstery. If the seat is around a corner from the only free wall, move the seat. More watts on a hidden face do not bend the beam. The flat panel is listed for a wall or a suspended ceiling, the Radi8 bar for wall or ceiling brackets, and the Ionis bar for a wall mount. That is not a licence to invent a ceiling kit for a wall-only bar. Plate versus bar is on the panel versus bar page.

Ceiling gap and fixings

Ceiling mounting follows that model’s manual. Mirrorstone’s panel manual from November 2024 refuses a flush fix to a solid ceiling. It asks for a 50 mm suspension gap or a bracket, and treats a suspended ceiling as the exception. Glass and mirror-front panels in that manual stay off the ceiling. The flat panel’s title matches that exception. Those millimetres are not a national rule. Herschel asks for 400 mm in front and 200 mm at the sides, and a grid ceiling may touch the grid. Mirrorstone uses 30 cm in front and at the sides. Electrical Safety First keeps combustibles about a metre from a portable heater. If the listing is the Ionis wall mount, stay on the wall.

Plug, lead and what not to cover

At 230 V, 1,200 W is about 5.2 A, inside a UK 13 A BS 1363 plug on an existing socket. Mirrorstone’s manual says a 1,200 W panel needs what it calls a 6 A socket. That is the brand’s instruction. It does not ban a 13 A plug, and it is not a reason to swap the fuse in a sound plug. A plug-in heater uses the fitted UK three-pin plug. Hard-wiring follows the diagram in the manual. Electrical Safety First says use that plug, skip the extension lead, keep about a metre from curtains, and do not dry clothes on the face. Do not leave a portable heater unattended overnight. A panel with no fan is still a hot face. If the only socket is across a doorway, fit one where the heater will live.

When you call an electrician

Approved Document P (2013) makes a new circuit, consumer-unit work, or circuit work in a special location notifiable. A bathroom is that location. A bracket on a dry wall, on a socket that already exists, is a different job from a feed beside a bath. The bathroom page explains why a room-type tag is not permission to mount in a zone. Book a registered electrician for fixed wiring, a missing socket, or a bathroom. In a dry room you can do the mechanical fix if you keep that model’s clearances and leave the consumer unit alone. If a new Ionis bar shows E1 and stays cold, switch it off and send it back. One saved review is not a failure rate. It is enough to stop resetting it.

Common questions

Should a 1,200 W panel go on the wall or the ceiling?
Put it where the beam meets the seat, and only on a surface the manual allows. The flat panel is wall or suspended ceiling, the Radi8 bar has wall or ceiling brackets, and the Ionis bar is wall mount. If the only ceiling spot looks past the chair, use a wall beside the seat, provided the clearances fit.
How much gap do I leave above a ceiling-mounted panel?
Use the manual in the box. Mirrorstone’s November 2024 manual refuses a flush fix to a solid ceiling and asks for a 50 mm gap or a bracket. Herschel’s front clearance is hundreds of millimetres, and a grid ceiling may touch the grid. Measure after the bracket is up.
Can the panel sit behind a sofa?
Only if you mean to heat the sofa. Chamber work tied comfort to line of sight, and a high back blocks a wall panel. Mount the face so your body is in the beam. If the sofa has to stay, use another wall or a ceiling spot the manual allows.
Is a 13 A plug acceptable at 1,200 W?
Yes for a normal plug-in heater. About 5.2 A at 230 V sits inside a 13 A BS 1363 plug. Mirrorstone’s 6 A socket line is that manufacturer’s instruction, not a ban on the UK three-pin plug. A new circuit or a bathroom feed belongs with an electrician. Keep the fitted plug.
May I use an extension lead?
No. Electrical Safety First says a portable heater goes straight into a wall socket. A reel, a cube adaptor, or a lead under a door is the same idea. If the socket is too far away, have one installed beside the heater. Keep combustibles about a metre from a portable unit, and do not hang washing on the face.
When is the install notifiable under Part P?
Approved Document P treats a new circuit, consumer-unit work, and circuit work in a bathroom as notifiable. A bracket on an existing socket in a dry room stays ordinary if you do not alter the circuit. The 1,200 W rating does not take bathroom wiring out of Part P.
What if a new bar shows E1 and stays cold?
Switch it off, unplug it, and use the return route. The Ionis material in this comparison includes a saved review with E1 and no heat. That is a reason to stop, not a code to clear by resetting. Leave the case shut. If a replacement shows the same code, choose a different listing.
