Infrared panel heater bathroom

Updated: 22 October 2026

A room-type field that says bathroom tempts you to mount a 1200W infrared panel heater over the towel rail. UK wiring practice cares about IP ratings, BS 7671 zones and Part P, not that tag. This infrared panel heater bathroom page explains why the three rows in the [1200W infrared panel heater comparison](/hub/heating/1200w-infrared-panel-heater) show no IP code in the saved tables. Sizing sits on the [buying guide](/hub/heating/1200w-infrared-panel-heater/sub/1200w-infrared-panel-heater-buying-guide). Peter F. compared the listings and public UK sources. There was no lab test. Zones, IP ratings, and what splashproof must mean

BS 7671 Section 701 measures zones from the bath or shower tray. Zone 0 is inside the bath. Zone 1 extends above it to 2.25 m or the highest shower outlet. Zone 2 reaches 0.6 m beyond the rim or enclosure, up to 2.25 m. Outside those, limited rules still apply near basins. Equipment in zone 2 typically needs at least IPX4, tested splash protection from any direction, not a guess that height will do. Zone 1 is stricter for many appliances. Ordinary 230 V sockets stay out of the zones, at least 2.5 m from the zone 1 boundary under standard domestic guidance, and bathroom circuits need 30 mA RCD protection. The IP mark has to be on the documentation for the exact model. IP44 or IP65 on another brand’s datasheet does not transfer to these listings.

Why this 1,200 W trio is not bathroom-ready

In the October 2026 files, none of the three comparison ASINs prints an IP field in the spec table. The Ionis listing includes a question about bathrooms, and the saved table still lacks IP. The MS-STD flat panel and the Radi8 bar likewise leave IP blank. Without that line, this comparison cannot approve any of them for zone 1 or zone 2, regardless of wattage. Room-type tags on amazon.co.uk are search filters. A Living room or Bathroom dropdown does not replace an electrician reading the IP mark on the carton and matching it to the zone diagram for your layout. If you need bathroom infrared, shop a listing that states IPX4 or better for the exact model, then confirm it with the installer against the shower position.

Part P, fixed wiring, and socket rules

Approved Document P makes new circuits, consumer-unit changes, and work in a bathroom special location notifiable. Adding a heater feed in a shower room commonly needs a registered installer or a Building Control notification. About 5.2 A at 1,200 W can sit on a 13 A plug in a dry room. Bathroom sockets are restricted. An extension lead from the landing is unsafe. Hard-wired bars at 2.4–3 kW need an electrician, and a permanent bathroom mount at 1.2 kW usually means fixed wiring, not a flex across a wet floor. Electrical Safety First still applies in an adjacent dry area: UK three-pin plug, no extension lead, towels clear of the face, and do not cover the emitter. A hot infrared face is not safe to lean on.

Safer options and when to stop

A heated towel rail on the heating circuit, a heater that prints a bathroom IP rating, or better extract ventilation often solves the chill without a 1.2 kW panel inside the zones. A heater in the dressing area, outside the zones, is simpler than fighting the geometry. Call a registered electrician for a new circuit, a checked RCD, a zone measurement after a shower move, or any doubt about IP and height. Stop if a heater trips the RCD, smells of burning, or shows a fault code. The Ionis extract includes an E1 report on a two-review sample. Return it. This page is wiring and zones, not a claim about pain relief.

Common questions

Can I put a 1200W infrared panel in a bathroom?
Only if that exact model carries an IP mark for the zone, and the work meets BS 7671. None of these three rows prints an IP rating in the saved spec table. A bathroom room-type tag does not fill the gap. Match the carton to the shower, not the amazon.co.uk filter.
Is IP44 enough for zone 2?
Zone 2 equipment is often cited as needing at least IPX4. The installer still confirms the label on the unit you receive. IP44 on a different model is not approval for these three ASINs. Zone 1 is a stricter volume, and a zone 2 note does not clear it.
What about a plug-in heater on the bath mat?
A portable heater belongs outside the zones, on a dry floor, plugged straight into a wall socket. An extension lead or a flex on a wet floor adds shock and fire risk. Do not dry towels on the face. Wall height does not turn an unrated panel into a zone 2 fitting.
The listing question mentions bathrooms. Is that enough?
No. The Ionis listing asks about bathrooms, and the saved table still has no IP field. You need the mark on the heater you receive, matched to the zone diagram for your shower. A later seller reply still has to match the carton.
Does a smart plug make a bathroom mount legal?
No. A smart plug can switch a heater in a dry room. It does not move a zone boundary, add an IP rating, or replace 30 mA RCD protection. The MS-STD smart-plug note is about scheduling, not a wet room.
Is ceiling mounting safer above a shower?
Height does not bypass the zones. Zone 1 extends above the bath to 2.25 m or the highest fixed shower outlet. An unrated panel in that volume is still in the zone. Use a datasheet that states the IP rating, and only a ceiling the manual allows.
Do I need Part P for a bathroom heater?
Most new fixed wiring in a bathroom special location is notifiable under Approved Document P. Use a registered installer who can self-certify or notify. A bracket on an existing socket in a dry living room is a different job.
Where do I compare these for a dry room?
These three rows are for dry rooms in this set. None is approved here for zone 1 or zone 2. If the only place left is beside the shower, shop a different model that prints IPX4 or better for that exact unit.
