How to fit silicone ear plugs

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a soft disc or a pair of tips, and the first night is when most bad fits happen. How to fit silicone ear plugs depends on which you are holding. Putty covers the opening. Tips are sized for the canal entrance. Do not roll putty into a point, and do not split a disc the maker forbids. A piece that stays in is a clinician’s job. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, used listing instructions and UK clinic pages, not a lab fitting. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Product choice sits on the [silicone ear plugs comparison](/hub/hearing-protection/silicone-ear-plugs).

Which plug you are holding

Look at the packet before you touch your ear. Putty in this set is Mobi Lock, Deep Sleeps, Knoxzy, Top Med, Frienda, and the Hush packs. Deep Sleeps says roll a ball, press it over the canal, then flatten it on the outer ear. A tip plug is JP London, Quiets, or Alrens. Quiets says insert and twist, with size M fitted and tips from XS to L. A tip that hurts needs a smaller size, not a harder push. Do not mould putty into a cone and push it in. The form trade-offs are on the silicone ear plugs buying guide.

Fitting mouldable silicone

Wash your hands. Warm one whole piece and roll it into a ball, not a point. Press it over the canal opening, then flatten it on the outer ear. Your voice should sound muffled when you hum. If the room sounds unchanged, peel it off and try the same piece again. Replace putty when it is gritty or no longer tacky. Deep Sleeps says up to seven days with oil-free soap. The Hush five-pack says do not clean, reuse, or separate, so one night is the instruction on that box.

Why reviews cut plugs in half

UK texts describe tearing one plug in half because the disc feels too big. That does not make halving the instruction. The Hush five-pack says not to separate the plugs. Mack’s and Puffin Swim say the same. Ear Band-It’s own putty allows tearing some off. That permission does not travel to Hush, Puffin, or Mack’s. When your pack is silent, use the whole plug over the opening. A half disc has a torn face. If an adult disc will not cover a child’s ear without entering the canal, the listing is the wrong size.

If a piece stays in

Stop when you cannot see the whole plug outside the canal. Do not hunt with a cotton bud or tweezers. NHS advice says not to poke the canal. In the UK, start with your GP, an ENT service, or a microsuction clinic. One Mobi Lock review describes A&E removal, and one Top Med review describes pieces a doctor could not remove. A plug that falls on the pillow is a fit you can abandon. A plug that is no longer complete is not.

Common questions

Do I roll silicone like foam?
Only in the sense that a cold lump needs warming. Foam is rolled thin and left to expand inside the canal. Mouldable silicone is rolled into a ball and pressed over the opening, then flattened on the outer ear. Deep Sleeps prints press, hold, and flatten. If your packet is a tip pair, you do not roll it at all.
How do I know the seal worked?
Your own voice should sound muffled when you hum, and ordinary room noise should drop, without pain. If the room is still at full volume, the opening is not covered. Lie down and check again. Pain or a sudden return of sound means peel it off and refit the whole piece. Silence is not the test. A stable cover is.
Can I split a plug for a small ear?
Only if the pack you bought tells you to. Several UK reviews halve Deep Sleeps, Knoxzy, and Hush plugs because one disc feels large. The Hush five-pack bullet says not to separate them. Mack’s and Puffin Swim say not to split mouldable plugs. If your pack is silent, use the whole piece over the opening.
How do I take putty off without leaving a bit behind?
Peel from the outer edge in one sheet and look at the piece before you bin it. A torn edge means you stop and check the ear in a mirror, without instruments. If the piece in your hand matches the piece you put in, you are done. If it does not, treat the remainder as lodged.
What if a piece stays in?
Leave it. Do not use buds, pins, or oil as a home extraction. Contact your GP, an ENT service, or a microsuction clinic, and use urgent care if you are in pain, bleeding, or dizzy. NHS earwax guidance already forbids poking the canal. Those one-off reviews are not a technique.
How do tip plugs differ, in one paragraph?
Quiets, JP London, and Alrens ship a pair plus spare tips, not a kneadable disc. Quiets says insert and twist, with M pre-installed and XS to L in the box. If that size falls out or hurts, try the next size once, then stop. JP London’s texts include fall-out and pain after about four hours, so a failed size is a reason to quit.
When must I throw putty away?
Throw it away when it is no longer sticky, when it is gritty or cracked, or when the listing forbids a second use. Deep Sleeps allows up to seven days. The Hush five-pack says do not clean or reuse at all. A dried disc that you rewet is not a fresh seal.
Can I clean a pack that says disposable?
No. If the bullet says do not clean, reuse, or separate, washing it is outside the instruction. Disposable on the Hush five-pack spec means the same thing. Deep Sleeps specifies oil-free soap and water. Use that method only on a pack that asks for it. A clean torn plug is still a torn plug.
