Optime vs X series ear defenders

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a petrol mower and a circular saw, and the two 3M PELTOR boxes look like one muff in two shells. One is the older Optime cup. The other is the X series, with a wire headband and a colour code on the cup. Optime vs X series ear defenders is a family split, because the newer shell does not automatically replace the older one. This page says when to keep the classic Optime and when the X cup earns its price. Prices in this set stay on the [main 3M ear defenders comparison](/hub/hearing-protection/3m-ear-defenders). We did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two shells, not a ladder

3M still sells both families. Optime runs from about SNR 26 to 34. Optime I is SNR 27. Optime III adds a double cup for lower frequencies, so that shell is deeper. The X range is the newer wire headband: X1 at 27 dB, X2 at 31 dB, X4 as a slim high-attenuation cup, and X5 at 37 dB. X3A and X5A are outside this basket. The overlap for a UK shopper is Optime I against X2A, and Optime III against X4A. Task bands stay on the buying guide on what SNR you need.

Moderate noise

Optime I is £19.99 and 180 g, SNR 27, for the 87–98 dB(A) band. X2A was £33.95 and 259 g, SNR 31. About £14 buys the slimmer cup and that four-decibel step, once the cushion already seals. If you wear nothing under the cup, keep Optime I. X2A’s listing states compatibility with 3M eyewear and respirators. That claim is the condition for the higher price. How the arms break the seal is on the ear defenders with glasses page. One top pick for the whole set sits on best 3M ear defenders.

High noise

Louder work is Optime III or X4A. Optime III was £28.76 and 399 g, the deep double cup. X4A was £33.92 and 360 g, the hi-vis slim cup. The prices sit close. The shape does the separating. The Optime family figure is about SNR 34, separate from a title that says 35 dB. The X4A EMEA sheet states SNR 32, and the chooser also shows 33. If you can live with the bulk, Optime III is the high-band cup at the lower price in this set. Helmet-mounted cups are a separate buy.

The recommendation with a condition

Stay with Optime when the seal is clear of other PPE. Optime I at £19.99 suits 87–98 dB(A) when SNR 27 is enough. Optime III at £28.76 suits a higher band if you accept 399 g. If a hood makes that deep shell ride up, the lower price stops being the better buy. Move to X for the slimmer colour-coded cup, especially with 3M eyewear. X2A at £33.95 is the moderate case. X4A at £33.92 is the high-band slim cup. WorkTunes is Bluetooth, outside both shells. A higher number is a poor default for a shorter, quieter job.

Common questions

Is the X series just a new Optime?
Both are 3M PELTOR headband muffs, and some steps share a headline SNR, while the shells stay different products. Optime is the classic cup, with a double cup on Optime III for lower frequencies. The X series is the later wire-headband range, colour-coded and sold on a slimmer profile. X1 at 27 dB overlaps Optime I. That overlap leaves the Optime on the shelf as a current buy when the classic cup already seals.
Optime I or X2A for a mower and a saw?
For a mower and a saw in the 87–98 dB(A) band, Optime I is the lighter buy in this set at £19.99 and 180 g, with SNR 27. Choose X2A at £33.95 and SNR 31 when you need the slimmer cup with 3M eyewear or a respirator. The extra £14 is that shape plus a four-decibel step. If the cushion already seals and you wear nothing under it, the dearer cup is optional.
Optime III or X4A for louder work?
Choose Optime III when you accept the deeper double cup: £28.76 and 399 g on the listing, with the family figure at SNR 34 kept separate from a title that says 35. Choose X4A when you want the hi-vis slim cup: £33.92 and 360 g, SNR 32 on the EMEA sheet, with 33 also on the chooser. If the seal lifts, the number on the box is no longer the protection you are wearing.
Why is X4’s SNR 32 on one sheet and 33 on another?
The EMEA sheet in this comparison states SNR 32 for X4A. The passive-hearing chooser includes 33 among the X figures. Both are 3M documents, and they stay as two readings. Use 32 on the EMEA sheet, and mention 33 only as the chooser figure. A midpoint such as 32.5 would be a third rating that 3M does not print.
Which family is slimmer with safety glasses?
The X series is the range sold as the slim cup, and the X2A listing says it works with 3M eyewear and respirators. Optime III’s listing does not make that claim. A slimmer shell still fails if the arm lifts the cushion off your head. That leak sits on the glasses page, rather than in a second catalogue of every 3M cup.
Do I need a helmet version instead?
If the muff has to clip to a hard hat, you are outside this comparison. Helmet-mounted Optime and X cups use a different attachment and are absent from the amazon.co.uk set here. Buy a headband when the band sits on your head. A helmet slot is a different product, even when the cup carries the same Optime or X name.
