Watch battery replacement tool

Updated: 24 October 2026

The watch on the dresser has stopped, and you want the tools for one quartz case at home. A watch battery replacement tool is the opener, the holder and a driver that fits, not a pouch that claims to repair every watch. This page assumes you already know whether the back is a snap, a notch or a ring of screws. The sequence is on [how to open a watch back](/hub/hand-tools/watchmaker-tool/sub/watchmaker-tool-how-to-open-a-case). The twelve listings sit in the [watchmaker tool comparison](/hub/hand-tools/watchmaker-tool). Peter F. read the amazon.co.uk listings on 22 October 2026. We did not change a cell. The tools a cell change actually uses

JOREST’s battery kit, B09B4R1G33, is the row sold for the cell. It is £9.99. The scored listing states an opener of 15–55 mm, a holder up to 50 mm, a pry, a five-in-one driver, tweezers and a cloth. The bits are −1.0, −1.2, −1.5, +1.5 and +1.8. Twenty spring bars, 1.5 mm thick, run from 16 mm to 24 mm. Those bars are for straps, not the cell. Reviews describe screwed and pressed backs. The holder stops the case sliding. Some watches still would not open, and the bullets list no link tool. If the driver rocks in the screw head, stop. It is the wrong bit.

The cell is not in the kit, and it is dangerous loose

No listing in this set includes a watch battery. Match the number on the old cell, or the number in the manual, and buy that coin cell separately. A used cell can still hurt a child. The Office for Product Safety and Standards says a swallowed button cell can burn the throat, and lithium coin cells are the worst. Store spares where a child cannot reach them, in the original packaging. If you think one has been swallowed, go to A&E or call 999. Do not induce vomiting. Lift the old cell with plastic tweezers, not a steel point that can short the contacts. Citizen says Eco-Drive cells are rechargeable: expose the dial to light first, and do not open that case yourself. If the job is no longer a simple cell, the other classes are in the buying guide.

Closing the back is not a water test

Citizen Watch UK says water-resistant models should be tested and resealed every two to three years, or whenever the cell is replaced. Moisture damage after an opening sits outside that defect cover. Swiss-Serv lists £30 for a battery fit with the gasket changed and no water-resistance guarantee, and £50 with a pressure test. Those are that workshop’s prices, not a UK rate. A home kit can put the back on. It has no pressure tester. JOREST’s wider kit says a snap back may need a separate press. If you get the watch wet, the £9.99 kit is the opener and the shop is the test.

When the shop is the right tool

Book the shop when the watch is a diver’s, when you swim with it, or when it is still under warranty. A back that will not move once the opener is seated is the other stop. Forcing it is how screws cam out and notches burr. Oil, a broken stem or a fallen hand is outside a cell change. The Bergeon holder does not open the case. If the cell number is worn off, do not guess a thicker cell. The kit belongs on a cheap quartz watch you will not swim with.

Common questions

What has to be in the kit to change a cell?
An opener that matches the back, a holder, a driver that fills any screws, and tweezers. The £9.99 JOREST kit states a 15–55 mm opener, a holder up to 50 mm and five bit sizes. Spring bars are for the strap. A new gasket is not listed.
Does the kit include the battery?
No. The battery-kit listing says batteries are not included. Match the number on the old cell and buy that coin cell separately. A swallowed button cell, including a used one, is an A&E or 999 matter. Do not induce vomiting.
Will the watch still be waterproof?
Treat the old stamp as finished once the case has been open. Citizen UK asks for a test and a reseal at each cell change on water-resistant models. A home kit has no pressure tester. Swiss-Serv’s own list is £30 without a guarantee and £50 with a test.
What if the watch is solar or Eco-Drive?
Expose the dial to light before you decide the cell is dead. Citizen tells owners not to open the case themselves, because dust and a failed seal can stop the watch. Do not use the £9.99 kit to get around that instruction.
Where do I put the old cell and the spares?
Out of reach, in packaging, not loose on the table. OPSS warns that a used lithium coin cell can still injure a child. Tape the old cell’s terminals or put it in a recycling pot. Suspected swallow means A&E or 999.
Is a home kit enough, or do I pay a shop?
The kit is enough for a cheap quartz watch you will not swim with, if you accept an untested seal. Pay a shop for a diver’s watch, a warranty watch, or a back that will not move. One workshop publishes £30 and £50. Your local cost can differ.
When is a diver’s watch out of scope?
When you still rely on the depth rating, or you take it in the water. Opening it at home does not renew that rating. Hand the diver to a workshop that will change the gasket and test the case.
