Watch repair kit buying guide

Updated: 24 October 2026

A stopped quartz watch on the kitchen table, or a bracelet that has started to pinch, is a tool problem before it is a parts problem. This watch repair kit buying guide is for the moment before you have matched a case knife, a three-pin wrench, a driver or a pouch to the back you can see. The [watchmaker tool comparison](/hub/hand-tools/watchmaker-tool) holds the twelve amazon.co.uk listings read on 22 October 2026, with prices in GBP. Peter F. did not run a workshop test. If you buy through our links, a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Start with the job, then the metal on the back.

Start with the job, not the piece count

Name the job before you look at a piece count. A cell, a strap, a bracelet link and a bare movement are four different baskets. A movement already out needs a holder. Cooper Watches lists 115 spring pins inside a 140-piece claim at £49.95, a different shop kit, which is why a large number is often spares. The Bluvizo rows are titled 149 pieces at £14.49 and publish no contents table. If a bracelet pin has to come out, the listing has to name a link remover. The Bergeon holder at £29.35 does not open a back, so it is the wrong first buy for a battery. A conditional pick is on the best kit page.

Match the back you can see

Turn the watch over before you add anything to the basket. Watch Battery UK describes four families: a snap-off back, a screw-off back, a plate held by small screws, and a sealed case with a battery hatch. A hatch is not a back to pry. Maddisons of Durham puts a case knife on snap-on backs and a Jaxa-style wrench on notched screw-down backs. A lip is a pry job. JOYVOX at £3.98 is three flat blades for snap backs, and one review says the edge was too thick. A notched screw back takes a three-pin wrench pressed down and turned anti-clockwise. Jewellers Equipment says stop if it will not move, and that a standard Jaxa does not open Rolex backs. The ieron wrench, model 0202 at £3.99, is 3.8 from 187 ratings, with pins that burr, slip, scratch or break. Small screws need a driver that fits. The JAPONA ball at £4.99 only twists a screw back, and one ball split on the first try. The sequence is on how to open a watch back.

What the kits in this comparison actually contain

Read the bullets, then the included-components line, because they can disagree. JOREST’s battery kit, B09B4R1G33, is £9.99, with an opener of 15–55 mm, a holder up to 50 mm, five bits, tweezers and twenty spring bars from 16 mm to 24 mm. It does not list a link remover. It is 4.5 from 23,554 ratings. A review says the tools arrive in a cardboard box. That job stays on the battery page. B09MK72YFD at £10.19 adds the link remover, punches, a hammer and 15 spare needles, at 4.6 from 24,577 ratings. Use 15–55 mm, not a later bullet that said 15–60 mm. The £16.99 kit, B0CT39L4VV, names the same backs and a link remover, in a pouch, at 4.6 from 6,660, and a review says the drivers were too big for watch screws. Both Bluvizo listings are £14.49 with the same 4.7 from 547. Do not add the two counts. ULELE at £18.99 has no contents list and no star line.

What a first kit still will not do

A pouch does not include a loupe, a case press or a pressure test. JOREST’s steps on the broader kit say a snap back may need a separate press to close. Opening the case does not keep a water-resistance stamp. Watches of Switzerland renews gaskets and pressure-tests after a cell change. A home closure is not that test. The Bergeon 4040 holds a bare movement from 8¾ to 19 ligne and does not open a case. Walsh’s beginner list stops at straps, bracelets, simple backs and a quartz cell. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still applies: satisfactory quality, fit for the purpose you made known, and as described. A wrench whose pins will not stay in the notches is a description problem to raise with the seller. A watch you swim in belongs with a watchmaker.

Common questions

What should I buy first if I only change straps and the odd battery?
The JOREST battery kit at £9.99 lists a 15–55 mm opener, a 50 mm holder and twenty bars, and no link tool. A 149-piece title without a contents table does not prove those parts. A three-blade pry can lift a lip and will not size a bracelet.
Is a 149-piece kit 149 tools?
Large counts in this kind of set are mostly spare bars and pins. The Bluvizo titles name an opener, a link remover, spring bars and pins, and they do not itemise the 149. Count the named tools until a contents list says otherwise.
Will a battery kit shorten a bracelet?
Only if the bullets name a link remover. B09B4R1G33 does not. B09MK72YFD at £10.19 adds the link tool, punches, a hammer and 15 spare needles. Forcing a bracelet pin with a driver is how tips bend.
What does a 3.8 from 187 on a £3.99 wrench tell me?
The reviews describe pins that burr, slip out of small notches, scratch the back, or break before the back moves. A low price does not repair that pattern. ULELE, by contrast, has no star line at all.
Are hand levers and dust brushes part of a first kit?
No. SHUNYABEI’s levers lift hands, at £3.45 and 4.5 from six ratings. ZJchao’s brushes are for dust, at £5.39 and 4.1 from 107. Walsh leaves hand removal off the beginner list. Add them when the watch is already open.
